Be it known that I, VVOLDEMAR Srno-rr, a citizen `ot the United States, residing at Scotia, in the county oir' Schenectady, State ol New York, have invented certain new `and useful Improvements in Clamps, of which the following is a. specification.
My invention relates to improvements in clamps adapted for use insecuring two substantially liat members in a position ot relative perpendicularity and van' object ol my invention is to provide a clamp which is economical in construction and simple and 1flexible in application, and more par ticnlarly anobject of my invention is to provide a clamp 'for securing barrier plates to the bases ot electric switches andthe like without limiting the barrier 'plate to a particular position on the switch bases or requiring a 'barrier plate ot heavier oonstruction than is necessary to tullill its unction, that is, to prevent pass-ingot the are.
Heretoiforc, barrier `plates have been s`e-` cured to the switch bases by drilling holes in the bases andin 'the barrier plates edgewise, the holes in the barrier 'plates being' leaded and tapped to receive cap yscrews orv studs projecting throi'igh the countersunk holes in the switch bases, This method is expensive particularly when the switch bases and barriers are ot' slate, marble o-r like brittle material as the drillingl 'costs are high and breakage heavy and further more since the barrier has to bedrilled edgewise, it is necessary to have the barrier needlessly thick for the lfunction it has 'to fulfill, in order to have snii'icient thickness ot material tor the size ci the hole-s required and the requisite .strength tor such heavy materials after ythe holes have been drilled. 1With such construction the position oit the barrier is detinitelyiined once the holes are drilled in the switch base and any desired change in thev position of the barrier practically necessitates `drilling' an`l other switch base. f
According' to myinvention, I provide a barrier support which eliminates drilling holes in the switch base and the edgewise holes in the barrier plate, it being neces 'sary to have a smaller number of holes in 'the barrier plate vand these holes are drilled not edgewise but transversely through the smallest dimension ot the barrie'r plate. ltris therefore possibley to use a. much lighter, that is thinner, barrier plate as by myinvention I am able to use the Istatic strengjhy ot the materials such as slate, marble, and the like tothe grreatest advantage. l A

In the embodiment ot' myy invention shown in Figs. l and 2, two substantially 'flat members l and 2, such as a switch base and its barrier plate, respectively, are shown `secured `to eac-h other at right an gies by my improved clamping dev-ice, the ll'at members being shown partly broken away, as'the length thereof is immaterial as 'tar as my invention is concerned.y rlhis clamping `device comprises a Usshape'd or substantially rectangular channel shaped n'iember" 3 having the legs or parallel flanges thereof provided atone endL 'with extensions et arranged to embrace or grasp thev flat member 2 and to be securely iastened thereto by a bolt 5 extending through a hole in the member 2 and registering holes in the extensions li. position of the L-shaped member 6 rela.- tive to the U-shaped member 3, that is to say the distance between' .the leg 8 and the bolt 5, may be varied by any suitablevadjusting means such as a nut 9 on a threaded extension l() of the L-shaped rmember 6, the nut 9 bearing against a suitable washer ll which in turn bears against the flanges and web of the U-shaped or channel member 3. The L-sh'aped member 6 is preferably of rectangular cross-.section to register with the openingy in the U-shaped member 3 and thereby prevent any turning or rotation of the L-shaped member 6 when turning the nut 9 thereon. Consequently turning the leg 8 of the L-shaped member 6 towards the bolt 5 will cause the leg S to draw the flat members l and 2 together, the edge of fiat member 2 abutting against the inner face of the member l. rIhe flat members 1 and 2 are thereby securely clamped in a position of relative perpendicularity.` Obviously, with the arrangement shown the fiat member 2 may be clamped-to the flat member l at lright angles thereto, in any number of positions, as there are no bolt holes or the like inthe two members that have to be brought into register before the ymembers can be secured Furthermore, with only two transverse bolt holes, one for each bolt 5 in the flatvmember 2, the cross-sectionfon the line of the bolt holes is not materially reduced and substantially the full static strength of the material is available so that in the case of thefiat member 2 being of relatively frangible material, such as slate, marble yand the like, it need be no thicker than necessary to fulfill the function for which it'is intended.
In the modification of my invention shown in Figs. 3 and et, the web 12 of the channel or U-shaped -member '3 instead of being substantially fiat and perpendicular to the flanges or legs, as is the case in Figs. l and 2, is curved. In` this case in order to prevent undue binding of the L- shaped member 6 -of rectangular section in the U-shaped member 3, the latter is provided with a lip 13 to hold the L-shaped member 6 in alignment away from the narrower or` curved portion of the U-shaped member 3.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,
sitioned within said channel member longitudinally movable therein and provided the nut 9 in a direction to drawwith a projecting portion substantially parallel to the extensions-of said channel member and adapted to abut another article to be clamped, and means carried on said movable member adapted to draw said projecting portion and said extensions toward each other to hold the articles to be clamped.
2. A clamping device adapted to secure two substantially fiat members in a position of relative perpendicularity, comprising a U-shaped member, projecting portions forming extensions to the legs of said 'U-shaped member whereby the U-shaped member is adapted to be secured to one of said flat members, an L-shaped member having one leg movable within said U-shaped member and the other vleg extending therefrom in the direction of the legs of the U- shaped member whereby the L-sha-ped member is adapted to abut against the outer face of the otherof said fiat members, and means for varying the position of the movable leg of said L-shaped member longitudinally in said U-shaped member.
3. In a clamping device of the class described,'a ,U-shaped member provided at one end with extensions to the legs thereof, an L-shaped member having the longer leg thereof movable within said U-shaped member and the shorter leg substantially parallel to the legs of said U-shaped member, meanson the end of said U-shaped member adjacent said `shorter leg of the L- shaped member for guidingthe longer leg of said L-shaped member to prevent the same .from binding in the web of the U- yshaped member, and means carried on the longer leg of said L-shaped member adapted to draw saidshorterleg andvsaid extensions toward each other to hold articles to be clamped.
4. The combination with two substantially flat members, of means for securing one of said members to the other at right angles thereto, comprising two U-shaped members, one at each end of one of said flat members, said U-shaped members being provided with parallel projectingv porl tionsadapted to be secured to said fiat member and ysaid U-shaped members extendingy partially across the edges of the 'other` of said flat members, and an L-shapedmember arranged in each of said U-shaped members having one leg adjustably positioned therein and the other leg extending over the outer face of the other of said flat members, and means for longitudinally adjusting the position of said L-shaped members in said U-shaped ymembers to clamp said fiat Amembers together.
5. The combination with two substantially flat members, of means for securing one of said members to the other at right angles thereto, comprising a U-shaped member provided with' substantially parallel projecting portions embracing and secured to one of said fiat members and an L-shaped member hai-ving one leg adjustabiy positioned in said U-shziped member und the other leg projecting over the outer face of the other Hut member, and means for 1ong-itudinniiy adjusting' the position of Seid L-sheped member in said U-shaped member to draw Said flat members together and maintain them in a position at right angles l0 to each other.
