Description

T. HUDLEY.
Sash-Holders.
N0.153,77l v Patented Aug. 4,1874.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS HOOLEY, OF DAVENPORT, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,771, dated August 4, 1874; application filed May 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HooLEY, of Davenport, in the county of Scott and. State Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Sash-Holder, of which the following is specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved sashholder, partly in section, to show interior construction. Fig. 2 is side view of the sash and sash-holder.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved sashholder, by which the sash may be readily raised and lowered and retained at any desired point. The invention consists in providing the lower corner of the sash with recessed grooves, inclined toward the corner of which the lower one has an adjustable slideplate carried along guide-pins of the horizontal sash, on which a rubber or other balLrests until raised by the lifting of the slide frorifbeneath for binding the sash by wedging in between the inclined part of the vertical sashrail and the casing.
In the drawing, A represents the windowcasing; and B the sash, which is recessed at the lower corner in such a manner thatinclined grooves a extend tapering from the corner as point of greatest depth along the horizontal and vertical rails of the sash to suitable distance from the corner. A slide piece or strip, 0, is hung loosely to two or more pins or screws, b, of the lower sash-rail, so as to extend along the full length of the lower groove and assume a horizontal position when not lifted for use. A ball, D, of rubber or other suitable material, is placed into the vertical groove a, and rests supported on slide-plate 0 when not thrown into use for binding the sash.
For fastening the sash into any desired position, the slide B is raised with the finger, which throws the ball above the corner, and causes, by the wedge action of the inclined groove and the weight of the sash, the firm binding of the ball against the casing, and thus the fastening 0f the sash. For lowering the sash is slightly raised, so that the ball can drop back on the slide-plate, and assume with the same the former position, allowing thereby unobstructed sliding of the sash. The whole fastening device is not noticeable from the outside, and works in a very secure and effective manner.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved sash-h older, composed of sash B, hax'ingrecessed grooves extending under suitable inclination from the corner in the side and bottom rails, in connection with ball-supporting slide-plate O at lower groove, to belifted from beneath, and sash-holding ball D for fastening the sash, substantially in the manner set forth.
' THOMAS HOOLEY.
