UNITED STATES PETER J. BOLAND, OF BERWYN, PENNSYLVANIA. I
DANGER SIGNAL.
Application filed July 24, 1922. Serial Nb. 577,177.
To all whom it may 0on0er7t:
Be it known that I, PETER J. BOLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berwyn, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Danger Signals, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to signal devices and has for its object the provision of an illuminated sign or signal device designed for use on highways to be located at cross roads, turns and similar points where driving is dangerous whereby to warn motorists and others that they should slow down, watch out for sharp curves and the like, the device having the great advantage of operating as a preventive of accidents.
An important object is the provision of a sign of this character which may be formed of any suitable number of panels which are adjustably mounted so that the device may be particularly adapted for use at curves of varying sharpness, forks or cross roads, the V adjustment of the anels permitting them to be visible from different angles. Another object is the provision of a. device of this character which contains illuminating means whereby it may be seen equally well by night as by day.
Another object is the provision of a device of this character in which the panels are not only adjustable in regard to their angular inclination with respect to one another but which is also provided with means for tilting the panels in case the device is located in a depression or hollow or upon a bank.
An additional object is the provision of a signal device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to install and adjust, positive inaction, efficient and durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a construction embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view.
Figure 3 is a rear elevation of one of the panels.
Figure 4 is a vertical section on line H of Fig. 3. i
l1Figure 5 is a plan view of the base plate form a firm base for the signal device. Suit- Figure 6 is a view of a road showing the to the draw- 1 ably secured upon the upper end of this post is a base plate 11 having a socket port1on 12 fitting on the post. This base plate carries a plurahty of upstanding pivot pins 13 and is formed with a corresponding number of arcuate slots 14 concentric with the plns. Y
The device further includes a plurality of rectangular box like casings 15 formed preferably of sheet metal and provided on their open front sides with glass panes" 16 bearing whatever warning legend is desired. Anysuitable illuminating means, such as an incandescent bulb 17, is provided within each casing 15 and located within the casing is some sort of reflector 18. i The manner of supplying current to the incandescent lamp is a mere detail not described and not shown as being of no consequence.
The mounting for each signal casing 15 comprises an L-shaped bracket 19 and these brackets are formed with holes 20 which are engaged upon the pivot pins 13. Each bracket carries a bolt 21 passing therethrough and engaging within slot lei-for v permitting swinging adjustment of the brackets, and these bolts carry nuts 22. The upper ends of the brackets are formed as sockets 23 within which are engaged one end ofcurved leaf springs 24 which have their other ends secured in sockets 25 which are secured to the backs of the casings 15. Carried by each spring where it is secured to the casing is a threaded rod 26 which passes through a hole in the associated bracket 19 and which carries adjusting nuts 27 which may be turned for the purpose of tilting the casings 15 up or down.
Mounted at the upper corners of the casings 15 are brackets 29 having slotted ends 28 to which are secured signs 30 which are inscribed with legends corresponding to therein, a fork and also a cross road. It
is intended that my device be used at these varlous points as lndicated on this view and it Will be apparent that at curves it is necesat crossroads four will be necessary."
gardless of where the devlce 18 used 1t 1s saryto use only two of the sign members 15 while at a fork three would be used and obvious that the various sign members 15 may be adjusted-upon the base plate 11 by meansof'the pivotal'mounting of the brackets 19 and the slot and bolt means for efiecting adjustment. By turning the nuts27 it is apparent that the sign members 15 may be tilted downwardly and forwardly or upwardly and rearwardly depending upon whether the device bemounted on a bank or in a hollow, the object being to bring the sign members in such position as to insure their being seen by travelers using the road.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply .con-
str'uctedland' consequently inexpensive warning Signor signal device wlnch 15 well adapted for highway use and which will operate as a "great safety appliance in preventingaccidents by warning and instructmg motorlsts'and' others in regard to dangerous curves and other conditions necessitating caution.
While I have shown and described the preferredembodiment of the. invention it is of course to be understood that I reserve the rightto make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus describedv my invention I claim; i
1 A device of the character described comprising in combination a base plate, a I
sign supporting member .pivotally supported onsaid base plate so asto be angularly" ad justable thereon in a horizontal plane,
2'. A device of the character described comprising a support, a base plate mounted thereon, a plurality of brackets rotatably ad justabiy mounted upon the base-plate, and 'a plurality of tiltably mounted sign members carried bysai'd brackets, each sign member including a casing containing illuminating means and covered by a glass panel bearing warning legends.
'3. A sign device of-the character described comprising a support, a base plate carried thereby-and provided with arouate slots, upstanding brackets pivoted; upon said base plate and carrying clamping bolts passing through the slots for providing rotatable ad justmen't of the brackets and sign members carried by the brackets, the mounting for the sign members consisting of U-shaped leaf springs secured atone end to the sign members and having their other ends secured to the associated brackets.
at. A sign device of. the character described comprising a support, a base plate carriedthereby and provided with arcuate slots, up-
standing brackets pivoted upon said base plate and carrying clamping bolts passing through the slots for permitting rotatable ad ustment of the brackets, and sign niem-- bers carried by the brackets, the mounting for the sign members consisting of U-shaped leaf springs secured at one end to the sign members and having their other ends secured to the associated brackets, and threaded rods carriedby the sign members, passing through holes in the associated brackets-and carrying adjusting nuts whereby to effect tilting of the sign members.
In testimonywhereof I aiiiX my signature.
