A J. .W. MEAKER WIRE ATTACHING CLIP Filed Sept. 20, 1923 1 taching fence wires to for easy and Patented Ma 12, 1925.
. l I JOHN W. MEAKER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
rss PATENT OFFICE.
ASSIGNOR'TO AMERICAN STEEL 8t WIRE COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, A. CORPORATION OF- NEW ERSEY.
WIRE-ATTACHING CLIP.
- Application filed September 20, 1923. Serial No. 663,828.
T all whom it fi my concern:
Be it known. that I, JoHiv W. MEAKERL a citizen of the United States, residing at Chcago,.in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vim-Attaching Clips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved wi're attaching clip and IDOIQPHI- ticularly toa clip ada ted for use 111 atence posts of types having wire engaging flanges and webs directed approximately at right angles to the flanges. v Y
Clips of this character mustbe adapted rapid ap'pl'cation to the wire and post and capable of making proper retaining contact with the post and wire.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a new and improved wire retaining clip which is smple in design and adapted for easy and rapid application.
' It is a further object to provide a clip, the wire engaging portion of which is so formed as to provide effective retaining engagement with the wire without deformation of the wire or clip. Other and further objects will appear as the description proceeds.
I have illustrated certain preferred embodiments of my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure. 1 is a thereto by means of my clip; Figure 2 is a; view of Figure 1 as seen from the left;
Figure 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the clip shown in Figures 1 to 3; i
Figure 5 is a view similar to Flgure 1 but showing a modified form of clip; and- Figure 6 is a view-similar to Figure 3 but showing the form of clip shown in Figure 5.
The clip has been shown used in connection with a T-shaped post 11 having serra tions formed on the edges of the flange, these serrations having high points 12 and low points 13. As shown in the drawings, the fence wire 14 will normally lie across 0pposite depressions or low points 13.
My improved clip, in the form shown in fragmentary view of a portion of a fence post with wires attached Figure 4, is provided with the flange'engag'ng hook 15, the post edge engaging straight portion 16, the wire engaging. are 17, the second straight post edge engaging portion 18 and the securing portion 19. s shown in Figure 3, when the clip is applied to the post to secure a 'wire, the hook portion 15 is hooked beh nd the one side of a flange:
2 of the post. The straight portion 16 hes across the face of the post upon one side ofthe wire 14, the are 17 crosses the wire at an angle and the secondstraight portion 18 lies upon the opposite side of the wire 14 and adjacent thereto. The portion 19 is bent around the bulb 21'on the rear of the web'of the post. It will be noted, as clearly shown in F'gures 3 and 6, that' neither the clip nor ,the wire engages the flat face of the post.
The form of clip shown in Figures 5 and 6 is similar to that of the other figures and is provided with the flange engaging hook 15, the wire engaging are 17' and the straight portions 16 and 18'. Instead of the long portion 19, however, this form of clip is provided with a ortion 22 adapted to be bent around the e go of the flangeopposite to the portion 15, as clearly shown-in Figure 6.
With types of clips having straight portions adapted to extend across "the face of arc 17 closely surrounds the wire and the opposite side portions 16 and 18 lie adjacent to and parallel with the wire. The clip thus firmly and positively engages the wire and retains it in place upon the post in a manner adapted to adequately prevent vertical displacement.
The clip is capable of rapid application by merely bending the portion 19 around the rear of the post or the portion 22 around the rear of the flange and, particularly when applied to posts of the general type shown, is efficient in preventing movement of the wire vertically of the post, aswell as providing the desired relative freedom of movement of the wire laterally of the post.
- I claim:
1. A wire attaching clip for use with fence posts having a wire engaging flange, the clip having a hook adapted to engage an edge of a post flange, a portion adapted to extend across the flange to retain wire against the flange, and an end portion adapted to be bent around another portion of a post, the Wire retaining portion having its central portion formed with a relatively short Wire retaining arc formed therein, the parts of the Wire retaining portion upon either side of the are being formed to lie approximately parallel to a post flange.
2. A Wire attaching clip for use with fence posts having a Wire engaging flange, the clip having ahook adapted to engage an edge of a post flange, a portion adapted to extend across the flange to retain Wire against the flange, and an end portion adapted to be bent around another portion of a post, the Wire retaining portion having its central portion formed with a relatively short Wire retaining are formed therein, said are approximately equaling in depth the diameter of the ire, the parts of the Wire retaining portion upon either side of the arc being formed to lie approximately parallel to the wire and to a post flange. 4
3. A Wire attaching clip for use with fence posts having a Wire engaging flange, the clip having a hook adapted to engage an edge of a post flange, a portion adapted to extend across the flange to retain Wire against the flange, and an end portion adapted-to be bent around toward the rear of a post, the wire retaining portion having its central portion formed with a relatively short Wire retaining are formed therein, the parts of the Wire retaining portion upon either side of the are being formed to lie approximately parallel to a post flange, and being oflset relative to each other whereby they lie in approximately parallel spaced horizontal planes.
4. A wire attaching clip for use with fence posts having'a Wire engaging flange, the clip having a hook adapted to engage an edge of a post flange, a portion adapted to extend across the flange to retain Wire against the flange, and an end portion adapted to be bent around toward the rear of a post, the Wire retaining portion having its central portion formed with a relatively short wire retaining are formed therein, said are approximately equaling in depth the diameter of the wire, the parts of the Wire retaining portion upon either side of the are being formed to lie approximately parallel to a post flange, and being offset relative to each other whereby they lie in approximately parallel spaced horizontal planes, the distance between said planesbeing not less than the diameter of the Wire.
Signed at Chicago, Illinois, this 17th day of September, 1923.
