v zen of the UnitedA States,lresiding at Brooklyn, county of` Kings, and State of New` York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Attachmentsfor Hook and Eye Tape, of which the followingis a specification.

Itis the common and usual practice in the garment industry to attach ay hook or ,eye

tape to the edge of 4a garment to form a.

binder edgekbutwith the present methods and apparatus in use for this purpose, fromtwo to three separate operations are necessary to complete the sewing ofthe tape Vto the garment, as follows, if the garment is of a certain type an ordinary plain flat' bindingtape is rst sewed-upon the garment yedge by means of the usual sewing machine binder attachment, after thisy the hook or eye tape is sewed on. As the presence. of the hooks or eyes upon the tape prevents it from passing through the usual binding attachment,.it` becomes necessary to` resort to two yseparate operations to vcomplete the sewing on of the `hook or eye tape, first one edge ofthe hook or eye tape isy sewed to the garment in a single needle'machine, so that *i l the edge'of the garment .extends to the mida 'dle line of the tape after which the tape is lfolded over the edge ofthe garment to bring the two edges of the tape into alignment and another row of stitching is run therebycompleting the operation.

For the accomplishment of these and such further objects as will be apparent'to those skilled in the art to which this appertains, the invention consists in the method and the apparatus for carrying out the method herein specically disclosed Ain the `following speciii'ca'tion, itl being understood that such changes, variations, modifications and equivalents are comprehended as fall within the scopeofthe claimshereunto appended. As shown inthe drawings on the work table 10 of a common type single needle sewing machine is secured a combined binder. and folder attachment which consists of an attachingl plate section 12, having thelongitudinal slot 12"' therein to receive the attaching screw 12b adapted to .engage a suitable threaded aperture provided in the work table or throat plateof the ma.- chinefand a garment guiding platev section 13 between which is. located the folding'sed. tion 14. v The folding section 14 consists of a piece of sheet metal having its ends bent over as indicatedby the numerals 15 and 16.to `form a channel for guiding" the `tape through the binder, the entrance end lying in a substantially straight vertical plane and curving as indicated at 17 to allow the tapeto be lfed to the folder from a` suitable tape supply such as the reellS, rotatablyl depthof which increases gradually towards i the delivery end, from which the tape is delivered directly to the presser foot 2O of the machine. The inner edge 32 ofitlie garment `guiding plate section 13 is cut away at an angle to allow the presser foot and feed to engage the, goods as closeto the delivery end of the folder as possible and the plate section 13 is ol'setupwardly as indicatedv at 33 (Figs. 5 and 6) to permit the reciprocation of the feed. lt' will be noted that the folding section is cut away as indicated by the numeral 40 in Fig. 3 to, form an unobstructed passage way for the hooks, eyes orthe like, the lower edge 41 of-this cut out portion forming a guide way which engages underthe free, end of the hooks or eyes and contacts with them adjacent the points at which they are fastened to the tape while` thev upper edge, 42 contacts with the other extremity, of the hooks, eyes or the like.

The operation of the device is as follows, the hook' or eye tape is led 'from the reel 18 and entered into the curved end 17 of the folding section 14, with the free ends of the hooks or eyes pointing downwardly, the beveled edge 21causing the hooks or eyes to pass along the outer side of the bent over portion 15. As the tape is fed through the folder it will berturned over as indicated in Figs. 5 and 6, and will pass downwardly along the inclined path of the folder from the delivery end of'which it will be fed di'-l rectly to the presser foot.

Due to the downward inclination of the folder, the hooksjor eyes will come into sli'ding contact with the upper face of the plate 12=at a point vabout under the strip 23, which contact lwill assist in turning the hooks or eyes into the horizontal position which they linally assume when the tape is stitched to the garment.y

As the inclination of the folder is arranged to bring the folded` tape down to a point in contact with thetable, it becomes necessary to provide theclearance space 29 adjacent the delivery end of the folder to prevent too great a pressure upon the free ends of hooks or eyes which would cause thetape to become wrinkled or creased within the folder. It being necessary in order `to keep-the tape in a smooth condition teinake the channel defined by the bent over portions 15 and 16 barely large enough to' allow for the passage of the tape, the clearance space `28 is provided 'at the ldeliv# ery end to permit the unobstructed passage for the fastener eyelets asthe hooks or'eyes are turned'up to the 'horizontaf'positien shown in Fig."5." i'

It will be'noted from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 7 that the contact of the edge of thecut out p'ortionBl against the ends of the hooks is such as to exert a pressure to'- wards the right Y'handyside 'at' theeai;`vl of the needle while the pressure of the guide lfor the garment formedby thel re-entrant bend 19 is towards theleft and infront of the needle, a two point spaced support is thus formed, which only requires the operator to feed the garment always in contact with the guide portion to ensure an absolutely straight, even stitching, no special attention `having to begiven to the hook or eye tape..

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States,fis

' l. In a sewing machine attachment, a combined folder and binder having a folding section consisting of a piece of sheet metal having its edges bent over to forma channel for guiding a tape through the binder, the entrance end of said folding section lying in a substantially straight vertical plane and curvedto allow the tape to be fed from a suitable tape supply, the inner end of said curved portion merging into a reentrant bend increasing lgradually toward the delivery end of said folder section, one of said bent over edges being bevelled to Vform a wedge portion adapted tolengage under a hook attached to said tape and cause the same to pass along the outer side of said bent over portion, and permit said hook to swing around into an inclined position as said tape is beingfolded.

4. In a sewing machine attachment as set forth in claim l, oneof said bent over edges of the folder being cut away to permit the z upper section of the folder to be sprung into a desired adjusted position relative to the `opposite bent over edge.

5. `In a sewing machine attachment as set forth in claim 1, the upper part of one of said bent over `edges being cut away for a short distance inwardly from the delivery `end to provide a clearance space for hook attaching eyelets, said attaching plate being slotted to provide a clearance for the free end of the hooksv as they approach said attaching plates due tothe downward inclination of the holder towards the delivery end f thereof. y

In a sewing machine attachment as cut away to form an unobstructed passage way .for hooks ork eyes, the lower edge of said cut out portion forming a guidek way which engages under. the free end of the hooks or eyes, and contacts with them adjacent the points at which they are fastened to a tape, while the upper edge of said cut out portion contactswith the other extrem ity of said hooks or eyes.
