HOSEA WILLARD, OF VERGENNES, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO FREDERICK 4 W. (JOE, OF SAME PLAUE.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-RESTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,653, dated July 28,1874; application filed May 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, HOSEA Vergennes, in the county of Addison and State of Vermont, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hand-Rests, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to furnish simple and convenient means for supporting the hand of the writer in the operation of book-keeping, combined with a book-slate for making figures or memorandums; and consists of a combined hand-rest and memorandum-book composed of two or more leaves or plates hinged together so as to be adjustable as to height.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is an end view. Fig. 2 shows the end of a ledger or account-book and the hand rest applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a face view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This handrest and memorandum-book is composed of four-more or less-leaves, slabs or tablets, made of wood or of any suitable material, covered, in whole or in part, with silicate or other composition or material, to render them suitable and convenient for making figures or memorandums thereon. These leaves or plates are hinged together so that they open and close similar to a book. The lower or bed leaf or plate may be thicker than the others, as the hinge-rod is supported thereby.
WILLARD, of
A is the combined hand-rest and book-slate B is the bed leaf or-plate. 0 represents the upper leaves or plates. DD are hinged plates attached to. the edges of the bed-leaf B. These plates support the rod E, to which the leaves or plates 0 are successively hinged. so as to be folded down onto the bed-leaf, on top of each other, as represented in the drawing. F are the hinges. Gr represents the ledger.
The rest is adjustable, as to thickness, by raising and throwing back one or more of the leaves, as seen in Fig. 3. Any figures or mem: oran'dum which the book-keeper may fillil it necessary to make, or which have been made by others, are placed on the under sides of the leaves to prevent erasure; but this is only necessary when the figures or memoranduins are to be preserved for any length of time.
With this invention the operation of keeping books and making the necessary figures and memorandums incident thereto is greatly facilitated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A hand-rest consisting of a plurality of leaves so hinged' together as to be adjustable to form varying heights of the hand-supporting table, as described.
' HOSEA WILLARD.
