UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILBERT NELSON ELLIOTT, OF HAMILTON. ONTARIO. CANADA, ASSIGNOR TO THT. N. SLATER COMPANY, LIMITED, OF HAMILTON. ONTARIO. CANADA.
TRACK SUPPORT.
Application filed December 18, 1923. Serial No. 681,421.
fo ai? 'icio/n it may concenn:
Re it known that I, VILBERT NELSON EL- iJo'r'r, a snhject ot the King of Great Britain. and a resident of the city of Hamilton, in the count),v of TVcntworth, in the Province otl Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvenicnts in Track Supports, of which the folowing the specitication.
Mv invention relates to improvements in track siii'iports with more particular reference to devices tor supporting overhead tuhular tracks such as are used t'or door hangers. overhead trolleys and the like. and the ohiect ot the invention is to provide an imiliroveil torni ot con'ibined coupling and hanger support for this purpose which will siinplitv and lower the cost of manufacture as well expedite the work ot erecting these tracks.
liv invention consists of the construction and arrangement ot parts all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. t is a central longitudinal section showing two sections of tubular overhead tra coupled and supported according to in); invention. the section being taken on the line l. lV of Fig. f2.
Fig. l is a transverse section on the stag- ;fjcrcd line Q of Fig. l.
,ifi-i1'. f is a plan view ot Fig. l.
YVig. -tA is a perspective view ot a peculiar T-shaped holt used in my invention.
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of the end oiP au overhead tubular track section with which inv invention 1s used.
Fig. tl is a diagrammatic view of an overheat t ihular t ack connected and supported f ing to my invention.
in the drawings like characters ot reterence indicate correspoin'ling parts in the dit tcrciit views.
t are overhead tubular track sections which have the longitudinal opening 2 4therein at'ter the usual practice.
it cach cnil ot' each track section l is neil a longitudinal recess or slot 3, said slots heing situated diainetricallv opposite to the longitudinal opening Q in the track -cction tis a tuhnlar coupling ineinhcr having the linigituilinal opening 5 therein. The
inside diameter of this coupling meuiher l is equal to the outside diameter of the track sections l.
hanger lirackct ti is secured to the coupling inemher 4 h v rivetsl T the inner heads S ot these rivets heing countersunk flush with the interior peripherjvv ot the coupiing n'ieinher 1l.
t? is a holt extending through aligned orifices lt) in the nienihcrs -l and (i, said oiiticc l() heing lo lated diamctricallf,Y opposite to the oiliening 5 and centrallvv ot he length of the cinipling inen'iher 4.
rI`his holt il is provided with a peculiar elongated T-shapcd head ll and carries a nut l2 at its ontcr end.
The construction and operation ot' inv invention is as follows.
lt will he ohserved (see Fig. l) that the ends ot' adjacent track sections l telescopicall)v engage within the coupling nicnihcr t and. since the rivet heads t? are countersunk and made liush with the interior pcriphervY ot' this coupling nieuiher. the track sections ma)Y lne siid into the coiipling.
lllhen the unt 'l2 has hccn tightened upon the holt 9. the, T--shaiied head llV is drawn against the y'ntericr tace of the couplin',y memher -t and forms a longitudinal. elongated protnherance projecting from the ir.- terior periphery of the member 4.
The coupling of two adjacent track sections 1 is thus accomplished hy simpl)v inserting the ends thereof within the coupling niemher 4.
In this operation the track sections niust he turned so thaty the "head ll. of the holt Si passes into the slots oi' recesses 3.
This engagement ot the head ll within the slots 3 positivelyv insures the exactlyY correct alignment ot' the track sections, so that the longitudinal openings 2 in the sections are in proper alignment and therefore, when once assemhled it is iinpossihle for the sections to hecome displaced to throw the oilienings 2 out of alignment.
ln the drawings a supporting structure to which the hanger hrackets (i are secured is indicated at'. 13.
This supporting structure is indicated in ln'oken lines in Figs. l and l and in tull lines in Fig.
lllhcu comparatively short track sections tif) are used the couplings joining adjacent track sections will also provide Sufficient support for the track but in the case of long sections it will be necessary to provide supports at points intermediate of the length of these long sections.
In Fig. G at A Ais indicated a` short track section in which the end couplings provide sntticicnt support while at B is indicated a long section requiring the intermediate supports (l.
Ordinarily a special form of intermediate support must be provided since the end couplings as hitherto made will not slide along the track.
Vith my construction however the same type of support may be used both as an intermediate support and an end coupling and thus the nuinufacturing cost is considerably reduced since only one torni of support need be made.
dien the support is to be used as an end coupling the T-headed bolt ll is inserted but when used as an intermediate support this bolt is omitted and it will be noted that, in this case, there being no protuberance on the interior ot' the member 4 this men'iber may be slid along the track to any desired position.
ln Figs l and 2 the partially slackened bolt S) is indicated in broken lines.
From the foregoing it will be clear that I have devised valuable imlnovements in track supports ot the class described which will greatly expedite the manufacture and erection of these tracks as well as positively insuring proper alignment.
Vilhat l claim as my invention is:
l. rllhe combination with a tubular track ot a coupling there't'or, the inner periphery of the coupling contorn'iing to the outer periphery ot the track and slidable longitudinally thereof, and a protuberance detachably associated with the coupling and projecting from its inner periphery.
2. The combination with two tubular track sections to be connected, ot a tubular coupling telescopically engaging the adjacent ends of said sections, and a protuberance detachably carried by the coupling and projecting beyond the periphery thereot, said protuberance adapted to engage within recesses formed in said adjacent ends of the track sections.
3. The combination with two tubular track sections to be connected, of a tubular coupling telescopically engaging the adjacent ends of said sections, and a longitudinally elongated protuberance detachably carried by the coupling and projecting beyond the periphery thereof, said protuberance ,adapted to engage within recesses formed in said adjacent ends ot the track sections.
4. The combination with two tubular track sections .to be connected, of a tubular coupling telescopically engaging the adjacent ends ott. said sections, a bolt mounted in the coupling, and an elongated T-shaped head `on said bolt .situated within the coupling, said T-shaped head yadapted to engage within recesses itormed in said adjacent ends of .the track sections.
A coupling and support for overhead tubular tracks comprising, a tubular coupling men'iber, a protuberance detachably associated with the interior periphery thereof and a hanger bracket .carried by said coupling member.
A coupling and support for overhead tubular tracks comprising a tubular coupling member.y a hanger bracket carried thereby, a bolt extending outwardly through an orilice in the .coupling member, and an elongate-,d T-shaped head formed on the bolt and forming a protuberance projecting from the inner periphery of the coupling member.
7. A coupling and support for overhead tubular tracks comprising a tubular coupling member having a longitudinal opening' therein, a hanger bracket secured to the exterior ot said coupling member, said coupling member provided with an oriticc therein at a point diametrically opposite the a toresaid opening and centrally of the length of the coupling, a bolt mounted in said oritice, and an elongated Tshaped head formed on said bolt, said head forming a protu herance projecting from the inner periphery oit the coupling.
