IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNKS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,578., dated July 28, 1874; application filed June 20, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. LARGE, of South Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunks, of which the following is a specification:

Figure l is an end view of a trunk to which my improvement has been applied, part being broken away to show the construction; and Fig. 2 is another end view of the same, partly in section, to show the construction.

My invention has for 'its object to furnish improved trunks which shall be so constructed that the operation of raising the lid will also raise the tray to give free access to the interior of the body of the trunk, and which will enable the lid to be locked in place when only raised sufficiently to give access to the tray. My invention consists in the combination of the slotted and pivoted arms, the pivoted arms, the cords, and the guide-pulleys with the body, the lid, and the tray of the trunk; in the combination of the slotted and pivoted arms, the pivoted arms, the cords, the guidepulleys, and the curved and slotted arms with each other, and with the body, the lid, and the tray of a trunk.

A represents the body of the trunk, and B the lid, which. are constructed and hinged to each other in the usual way. C are curved arms, the upper ends of which are pivoted to the rear parts of the ends of the lid B. The curved arms O are slotted longitudinally to receive a pin or screw, a', attached to the rear part of the lids of the body .A of the trunk, to hold the said lid B in place when fully opened. In the arms C, at the forward side of the lower ends of their slots, are formed notches c, to receive the pins a and lock the lid in place when fully opened, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. D is the tray, to the ends of which, near their forward lower corners, are attached pins or screws d', which pass through longitudinal slots in the arms E, and through holes in the ends of the arms F. The other or upper ends of the arms E are pivoted to the forward part of the ends of the lid B. The other or rear ends ofthe arms F are piv oted to the ends of the trunk-body A, near their upper rear corners, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Gr are cords, the forward ends of which are attached to the forward upper part of the ends of the trunk-body A. The cords Gr pass over guide-pulleys H, pivoted to the ends of the lid B, near their upper forward corners. The other or rear ends of the cords G are attached to the ends of the tray D, near their upper rear corners. In the arms E, at the forward side of the lower end of their slots, are formed notches e', to receive the pins d', and lock the lid B in place when raised only sufficiently to give access to the tray D. I are guards attached to the forward parts ot' the trunk-body A, to receive the lower ends of the arms E when the lid is lowered, to prevent said arms from striking and injuring the contents of the trunk when the said lid B is being lowered.

With this construction, as the lid B is raised thearms E slide up upon the pins el', until said pins reach the lower ends of the slots in said arms E. As the lid B is raised farther, the arms E raise the forward part ofthe tray, and the cords G raise the rear part of said tray, so that it may be raised horizontally, and so that when the said lid is fully opened the said tray may be raised sufficiently to allow convenient access to the interior of the trunkbody A.

The trayD, when lowered, rests upon cleats l 2. The combination of the slotted and pivn oted arms E, the pivoted arms F, the cords Gr, the guide-pulleys H, and the curved and slotted arms O with each other, and with the body A, the lid B, and the tray D of a trunk, substantially as herein shown and described.
