that the aforementioi'ied projecting tongues on the cap preclude relative rotation of the cap and base.
vReferring more particularly to the drawings,`theasseinbled table talker is shown in 'Fig l comprising an acoustic horn 1, a
The base portion 7 is initially die pressed to the shape shown. The removal ot the material in the center of the base 7 leaves a plurality ot' tongues 14, 15, 16 and 17 protruding toward the center ot the base portion 7 as illustrated more clearly in Fig. 5. The tongues are spaced apart by slots 18, l), 2O and 21. The tongues 14, 15, 16 and 17 are pressed downwardly and at the samel time an aperture 2-.1 maybebpunched ,into base 7 to permit passageqotlie conductor 6 therethrough. The aperture 24 for the conductors is drawn inwardly, providing round smooth edges to facilitate the pas sage of the conductors into the base. .By a final operation on the base portion 7 a series of apertures 25 are punched in an annular ring about the flattened top of the base 7. These apertures are clearly illustrated in plan view in Figs. 2,4, and 8.
The lower base member 8 is formed from flat sheet material by a pressing operation which provides an annular upstanding shirt 26 connected with a horizontal circular bottom plate depressed from the plane oi the botto of the member( 8 as indicated at 27. The s irt 26 is then upset forming a shoulder 28 adjacent the planeet the. bottom of the base member 8, completing the stamping andl pressing operations upon this lower base member.
The insert member represented by reierence character '10 is cut and pressed from sheetmetallto the shape represented. The several parts are assembled together as represented inthe drawings wherein y the circular felt slieetf'f) is stretched overnthe lower base member by the telescopiallyj fitting insert 10 Withiny the lower vbase'"member 8.
rlhe felt lays smoothly over the annular shoulder 28 which `forms a limiting stop wien the upper base member 7 is telescopically iitted into the lower base member 8.
1t will be understood that after completion et' the cutting and pressing operations upon the base members that the material is subjected to 'heat treatment for ornamenting and beautifying the exterior surface appearance.
As represented more clearly in Fig. 7, the electromagnetic sound reproducing mechai'iisnii within the casing is provided with a inolded'cap 3 having depending projections 29 and 3l. Still another projection may be provided but is hidden from view in Fig. 7. These projections are spaced at intervals about the periphery of the lower edge of the skirt of the cap 3 in proportion to the distances between the apertures and the upper base .member 7. When thc instrument is to be assembled, these nojections 2t) and S31 enter corresponding),` apertures 25 and lock the electro iagnctic mechanism against rotation with respect to the base. The cap 3 thickened at its central portion 38 and tl'ireaded to receirctlie ferrule si serving as a seat and support for the acoustic horn 1. then the assembled table talker is inserted vertically downwardly into the supporting base and the projections 29 and. 3l passed into apertures 25 locking thc instrument against rotation with respect to the base, l clamp the casing 2 by frictional engagen'ient with the depending lips 14, 15, 16 and 17 by ineans'o't a collar band 3ft shown more clearly in Fig. 6. The band 3st is provided with a pair ot interiorly directed, projections S5 tending to bite into the casing between a pair ot the diametrically opposed slots 18, .1.9, 2O and il. The collar 34 is drawn tightly against depending lips 14,15, 16 and 17 by means ot' screw nie). ber 36. After the table talker has been firmly anchored against removal from the base member 7 the lower base member 8 is telescopically inserted within the upper base member 7 as heretofore described. Ilihe cornvpleted instrument is substantially sealedv against tampering and requires no adjusting after passing a final and rigid factory inspection.
The metallic insert l() serves not only as a means :tor stretching the felt 9 over the lower base member 8, but also as a weight to lower the center of gravity of thc'table talker. By this arrangement of telescopic members l avoid the necessity' of gluing the telt to the base and secure a much more uniform product by reason of the tight stretching ot the felt' over the shoulder 28 which adds to the esthetic qualities of the instrunient.
The construction of the support as hereinbefore described and the method of manufacturing the same. has been found to be one of the practical embodiments of the invention, but it is to be understood that moditications may be made and that I intend no limitations u onthe invention other than are imposed y the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is as follows:
'1. A Support for an electromagnetic sound reproducing mechanisnn'comprising in combination a casing including an electromagnetic ope ating mechanism, a cap secured to said casing, a plurality of depending projections on said cap, and a hase provided with a plurality ot' apertures arranged to rereceive said projections when said casing is inserted in said-base for locking said asing gainst relative rotation with respect to said ase. t
2. A Support for an electromagnetic sound' repro'ducer, comprising 1n conihination a hase member having a smaller diameter at its upper extremity than at its lower extremity, a easing containing an electromag netic sound reproducing mechanism, and means in the upper extremity ot said hase, memher for securing said casing against withdrawal and relativev rotation, consisting of a plurality of depending tongues. and means forcing said tongues into l'rictional engagement with said easing.
3. A Support for an electromagnetic sound reproducing mechanism', comprising in com. hination an Aupper hase member and a lower hase lnemher telescopically fitting together, a casing including an electronmgnetie operating mechanism. means l'or securing 'said casing in said upper hase member, comprising a pluralit)Y of do\\'nwardl v extending tongues, and means for forcing said tongues in a Substantially horizontal direction for frietionally engaging the walls of said cas-v ing consisting ot a hand adapted to have its ends drawn together t'or increasing the grip ot' said tongues upon said casing.
l. A Support t'or an electroniagnetitl sound reproducer. comprising in comliination a plurality of hase memhers. including an upper hase memlier and a pair ot' lower hase memlieris` arranged to he telescopicaltv secured together`- one of said lower base niemliers comprising a disk with an upwardll protruding annular tiange thereon with an upset annular ring on said lange immediately adjacent the plane ot` said disle. said other hase inemlier comprising a disk of` relatively smaller diameter with an ilpwardly extending [lange for securing a layer ol' faluic over the first ot' said pair of hase members and providing a mass l'or lowering the center,ot` gravit)v otq said electromagnetic sound reproducer.
