UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ETTORE CARDINI, 0F OMEGNA, ITALY.
BOX FOE TOYS.
Application filed December 8, 1924. Serial No. 754,678.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Erronn CARDINI, a citizen of the Kingdom of Italy, residing at Omegna, llovara, Italy, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Boxes for Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of contain toys, representing persons, animals, trees or any object whatever, characterized by the fact that a large sheet of a sufficiently stiff substance is applied correspondingly to at least one of the sides of the said box and provided, as the case may be, with a hole in a corresponding position to the open end of the box.
On the outer side of the said sheet, the interior or the exterior of a building, or a landscape, may be depicted relating to the nature of the toys contained in the said box, the sheet in question being adjusted in such a way that when folding its two sides and afterwards its top part, or otherwise, it will constitute the ordinary closure or cover of the box, or will adapt itselfto the side of the box to which it is attached.
If, for instance, the toys are vehicles of any type (motor cars, aeroplanes, boats, trains, cabs or such like) the picture that may be employed may be that of the outer part of the building having reference to the toys (garage, hangar, landing pier, tunnel or station, coachhouse and such like), the opening of the box being utilized to repre' sent the entrance of the said building.
In any case, without any addition of supplementary pieces, this box may lend itself to become a toy, having connection with the toys contained therein, by means of the unfolding of the said sheet, constituting, as the case may be, its closure.
The annexed drawing represents by way of example a box for motor cars where the applied sheet is used. to form the front part of a garage.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box with the applied sheet unfolded, and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the box with the applied sheet folded and ready to close the box.
In the above mentioned instance, the sheet 1 representing the front part of a garage, is provided with a hole whose edges 2 are applied to the walls 3 of the box at the open end thereof. By folding this sheet, for ina box destined to stance, along the two vertical lines 4-4 and 5-5, and afterwards along the horizontal line 6-6 the said sheet may be brought into the position shown in Fig. 2. I
A projecting portion 7 of this sheet may be used, when folded along line 4 -5 to constitute a kind of fastening flap, this flap can, as the case may be, be extended to form a further fiap or finger-piece 7 destined to be left out of the box and to facilitate the opening of same. It is quite obvious that the folding of the sheet may be done in any other way.
This sheet thus applied can be made of any substance; it may be constituted of dif ferent pieces joined together by means of hinges or such like, placed correspondingly with the fold lines so as to avoid the tearing of the sheet along these lines, It may also form with the walls of the box one single object.
Anyhow, the shape, the size and the materials constituting the box and the sheet applied thereto, may vary according to necessity, at the same time keeping strictly to the principles of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
1. A box for toys, comprising a box body having an opening, and a foldable sheet secured to the b x body and provided with an opening which permanently coincides with the box body opening so as to uncover the same when the sheet is unfolded; said sheet having portions which normally project laterally beyond the sides of the box body but are adapted to be folded over upon one another so as to cover both openings.
2. A box for toys, comprising a box body having an opening, and a foldable sheet secured to the box body and provided both with an opening which permanently coincides with the box body opening so as to uncover the same when the sheet is unfolded, and with portions which normall project laterally beyond the sides of the box body but are adapted to be folded over upon one another so as to cover both openings; said sheet bearing upon its outer face a pictorial design appertaining to the nature of the toy or toys contained in the box and which is exhibited when the sheet is unfolded.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
ETTORE CARDINI.
