PATENT OFFICE.
GABRIEL LAN'IIERI, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
PERKANENT HA IR-WAVING MACHINE.
Application filed October 19, 1922. Serial No. 595,521.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GABRIEL LANTIERI, residing at Jersey City, county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Permanent Hair-\Vavim Machine, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hair treating apparatus, and moreparticularly to machines adapted to be used for what is known as permanent hair waving.
One of the objects of the invention is to provide a machine of the above character, which is simple in construction, and so constructed that the heating devices may be readily adjusted to the various positions required in their use in permanent hair waving, and whereb they may be removed to a position out of t e way when not in use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a machine of the classdescribed, wherein the electrical equipment is so constructed that it will not easily become disordered, and
which may be operated or manipulated by an operator unskilled in the operation of electrical machines.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less specific than those referred to above, will be in part obvious and in part pointed out in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts and applications of principles, constituting the invention; and
the scope of protection contemplated will be indicated in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein I have illustrated preferred forms of embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 is an elevational view, showing my improved permanent hair Waving machine, set up ready for operation.
Figure 2 is a top plan view, partly in sec- 1 tion, the view being taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the thereof, the reference numeral 1 denotes a 7 suitable support, the same comprising a cylindrically formed tube or rod, adapted to be suspended from the ceiling sitter the manner of suspending chandeliers, through the lower end of which is attached, as by means of the threaded connection 2, a bracket 3, said bracket 3 having a depending flange portion 4. The flange portion 4 of the bracket 3 is provided with threaded lateral openings adapted to receive the inner end of the bracket arms 5, which bracket arms are bent or turned downwardly, as at 6, the lower ends of said arms extending through theupper and lower walls of a hollow ringlike structure 7.
The ring 7 is formed by two channel members 8 and 9, disposed in telescoping relation, suitable clamp nuts 10, 11 and 12 serving to hold the channel members 8 and 9 to vided for the protection of each circuit. Each of the sections of the outlet box or ring 7 is in the present instance provided with a plurality of sockets 16, adapted to make connection between'the line circuit and the cables connected with the heaters, and "in the present instance one of the sockets is utilized for a tell-tale lamp 17.
The reference numeral 18 indicates the plugs which are adapted to connect with the socket 16, each plug in the present instancebeing connected with a cable 19. Each of the cables 19 is preferably divided at the point 20 into a pair of branch cables 21 and 22, and each of the latter cablesis connected with one of the heaters 23.
Each of the cables 19 is supported inter mediate its ends bye cord 24, which cord passes upward over a pulley 25, thence outwardly and over a pulley ,26, whence it relative to the standard 1, that the several heaters will be grouped together, as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings. The cords 24 are attached to the cables, asbymeans of the pinch clamps 31, so that the positionsof the heaters may be relatively ad usted with respect to the head of the subject being treated, it being understood that some of the heaters are adapted to be used on the top portion of the head of the subject, and others upon the side portions thereof. The weight of the counterbalancing means 28 is such as to support the heaters in such a way that they will stay in their adjusted positions, whereby no strain will be put upon the hair of the subject.
In the embodiment of my invention shown in Figure 3, there is provided a hollow ring 32, supported upon the bracket arms 33, from the hanger 1, and located in this holiow ring are take-up devices 34:, adapted to receive the suspending cords 24, spring means 35 being provided in said take-up devices to act as counterbalancing means for the suspended heaters and their cables. The
take-up means 34 are supported by means of bracket arms 36 provided upon standards 37 fastened to the lower wall of the hollow ring 32. v
In the embodiment of my invention show in Figures .5 and 6, the take-up devices 38, similar to the take-up devices 34, are suspended upon arms 39, adjustably mounted upon the hanger 1.
1n the embodiment of my invention shown in Figure 7, the take-up devices 40 for the suspending cords are carried in a box 41 carried by the bracket 42, which bracket is carried by the hanger 1, said bracket carrying the bracket arms 5, the remainder of the construction being identical with that shown in Figures 1 and 2.
The heating tlEWlCES 23 are preferably similar to those disclosed in my application Serial Number 595,522, filed Oct. 19, 1922.
Having thus described my invention, the operation thereof, which should be largely understood, is as follows The subject is seated beneath the machine and the hair suitably wound upon curlers and covered with the hair treating ingredients is inserted in the heaters, one curl being inserted in each heater, the position of the heaters being adjusted by thesuspended cords 24, and by means of the pinch clamps 31, whereby each heater may be indi- 'vidually adjusted to the exact position demanner.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a machine of the class described, in combination, a depending support having a bracket at its lower end, a plurality of outwardly and downwardly extending arnis carried by said bracket, a circular outlet box mounted upon the lower and of said arms,
said outlet box being divided into a plurality of independent sections, each of which is provided with a plurality of terminals, a switch, and fuse members, a plurality of electric heaters adapted to lie in nested relation within the circumference of said outlet box, cables extending from said heaters to the terminals carried by saidoutlet box, and counterbalancing means for said heaters engaging said cables intermediate their ends.
2. In an apparatus of the class described, in combination, a depending support, having a bracket at its lower end, a plurality of outwardly extending arm's mounted upon said bracket, the outer ends of said arms having depending portions, a. circular 1101- low ring forming an outlet box mounted upon the downwardly extending portions of said arms, a 'plurality of electric heaters located within said ring, said ring being provided with a. plurality of independent sections, each section of which is provided with a plurality of terminals, a switch, fuse members, cables connecting said heaters with the terminals of said outlet box, and adjustable counterbalancing means adjustably connected with the intermediate portions of said cables.
3. In an apparatus of the class described, in combination, a depending support, having a bracket at its lower end, a plurality of outwardly extending arms mounted upon said bracket, the outer ends of said arms having depending portions, a circular hollow ring forming an outlet box mounted upon the downwardly extending portions of said arms. a plurality of electric heaters lo cated within said arms, a plurality of electric heaters located within said ring, said ring being provided with a plurality of independent sections, each section of which is provided with a plurality of terminals, a switch, and fuse members, cables connecting said heaters with the terminals of said outlet box, adjustable counterbalancing means adjustably connected with the intermediate portions of said cables, and depending supporting Inc-ans, independent of said first named supporting member, for said counterbalancing means.
4. In a machine of the class deccribed, in combination. :1 depending support, a continuous circular hollow outlet box carried by the support. said outlet box having internal par titions dividing the same into a plurality of sections. terminals and fuses arranged 111 each of the said sections, a switch in each section, a plurality of heaters suspended below the said box, and take-up devices in each of the said sections of the outlet box for independently and adjustably suspending the said heaters with respect to the said box.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses. I GABRIEL LANTIERI. Witnesses EMMA VEINBERG, ALICE O. BAYLEY.
