To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I EUenNn N. COOPER? a citizen or the United States, residing at Stettler, Province of Alberta, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements ma Gate, otwhieh the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to that class of gates which swing upon hinges or pivots at one end and has for its object to provide gates of this class with improved means whereby they may be quickly and easily raised off the ground and retained in elevated positions without interfering with their swinging and means for locking the gates so as to prevent sagging.
A further object of the invention is to provide a gate of simple, durable and inexpensive construction which may be readily, quickly and easily adjusted by hand to various vertical positions and swung to open and closed position.
With the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that a crane post 1 is disposed in spaced relation to the latch post 2. A pair of spaced U-shaped hinge leaves 3 are fixed to the crane post 1 by having their legs passing therethrough and are engaged by the leaves 4- which are attached to the gate 5 which may be of any preferred construction. It will thus be seen that this gate 5 may not only be hinged or swung in relation to the crane post 1 but may also be moved vertically in relation thereto. A crane device is mounted on the upper end of the crane post 1' and consists of a bar 7 having a collar 8 intermediate its ends revoluble on the post 1. A pair of pulleys 9 are car ried by the bar 7 one at each end thereof. An arm 10 having a collar 11 revolvably engaged with the post 1 is disposed below.

A cable" 1 5 is trained over the pulleys 9 and 12 and is attached to an intermediate portion of the gate 5 as at 16 and the other end of this cable supports a counterbalancing weight 17 for the gate 5.
It will thus be readily seen that the gate may be adjusted to various vertical positions and readily swung to an open and closed position and that the crane device will move with the gate when it is swung.
A modified form of the crane mechanism is illustrated in Figure 3 wherein it will be seen that a crane bar 19 is revolvably mounted on the top of the crane post 1 intermediate its ends by a suitable pin or some other like device. Pulleys 20 are carried at the ends of the bar 19 and the cable 15 is trained thereover. The bar 19 is braced by the rods 20 two in number which are engaged with the bar adjacent its extremity and are formed integral or attached to a collar 21 revolvably mounted on the post 1.
At the free end of the gate 5 there is disposed a pair of vertically spaced latch bars 23 which project beyond the free end of the gate. A pair of vertically spaced keepers 24 are mounted on the latch post 2. These keepers are of U-shaped formation and their extremities are attached to the post 2 by pins 25 and the intermediate portions 1nerely rest against the post and thus the latch bars 23 may rest thereon. A closure 26 is associated with each keeper 24 and consists of a rod pivoted at its upper end while its lower end is novelly disposed adjacent the terminals of the keeper thereby preventing the removal of a latch bar disposed in the keeper until the closure is swung out of the way as is indicated by the arrows in Figure 2.
I have, in the present instance, shown and described the preferred embodiments of the invention which will give in practice satisfactory and reliable results, and it is to be understood that the same are susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 2- In a device of the class described, the combination of a gate, a post, a pair of U-shaped membens having their terminals piercing the post so that their intermediate portions are disposed vertically, hinge members on the gate engaging the intermediate portions of the intake members permitting the gate to swing in a horizontal position and also to move vertically, and a crane device mounted on said post consisting of a bar having an intermediate circular portion engaged with said post so as to revolve thereon, pulleys journaled in the ends of the bars, an arm provided atone end With a circular portion revolvably mounted on the post below the bar, a pulley carried in the end of the arm, a brace rod swivelly mounted at one end to the post and connected at its other end to the free end of the arm, a cable trained over said pulley and attached at one end to the gate, and a Weight supported on the other end of the cable for counterbalancing the gate.
