BRUSH.
Application tiled March 4, 1922.
-TQ all whom it may 00a/cem.'
Be it known that l, Louis V. LUcL-i, a citizen of the United States, and a resident Eot Harti'ord, in the count-y or Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented new and Improved Brushes, of which the iollowing is a specitication.
My invention relates more especially to that class of brushes that are employed for cleaning or scouring purposes and in which the bristles are comparatively stili', and an object of my invention, among others, is to provide a brush or' this 'type that shall be strong and durable, simple in construction and particularly efficient in operation.
One form of brush embodying my invention and in the construction and use oip4 which the objects herein set out, as well as others, may be attained, is illustrated in the accoinpanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in longitudinal section through my improved brush.
Figure 2 is a side view with the terrule cut in section and the handle broken oit.
Figure 3 is an isometric, perspective view showing the core and the disposition ot the bristles thereon after the twisting operation and with the shank broken oit.
Figure l is a side view of the brush.
Figure 5 is an end view of the bristle end et' the brush.
Figure 6 is a view in lengthwise central section on a plane denoted by the dotted line G-*G of Figure 7, a portion of the handle being broken ott and showinganother means for securing the shank of the holder in place.
Figure 7 is a. view similar to Figure G but with the terrule only cut in section and this on a pla-ne denoted by the dotted line 7-7 of Figure 6.
ln the accoi'npanying drawings the numeral 5 indicates the handle ot my inl.- proved brush, that is composed oi any suitable material, as wood, that end ot the han dle to receive the brush being formed in any suitable manner and especially with a round ed end or tang 6 to receive a errule 7. A hole 8 extends through the handle to receive the shank 9 of a holder within which the bristles of the brush are secured.
In constructing this holder the strands 10, 11, oi' wire or any othersuitable material are placed side by side and projecting through holes 12 in the end of a clamping cup 1S, these ends of the strands projecting for Serial No. 541,073.
some distance beyond the open end ot' the cup. A bundle ol bristles ot any suitable material is placed between the two strands and Vagainst the outer surface of the end ci? the clamping cup. r[he two strands are then twisted tightly together, asV by imparting relative movement in opposite directions to opposite ends ot the strands that are held together for this purpose. This operation will produce the shank 9 in the form or' tightly twisted strands, and the bundle ot loop 15 may or may not be twisted, but in the preferred form of construct-ion some twist is imparted to it, and this may be to any extent desired, from a. partial turn to one or two or more complete turns.
This will distribute the bristles evenly around the periphery of the cup 13 that may be of any desired shape, and when termed on said cupy a brush will be produced ol a shape controlled by the shape of the cup and of a thickness depending upon the number of bristles comprised in the structure. In securing this structure to the handle,y in that 'form of the device illustrated in Figure 1, the shank 9 is pushed through the hole 8 and its threaded end 1S is engaged and secured by a cap 19 composed ol any suitable inaterial land having` a threaded opening to rcceive said threaded shank. 'illus will Vtorce thc cup 13 into the open end ot the terr-uic 7, the outer end ol? which is nc".rablj-,' flared to correspond with the llared shape of the clamping cup, and as clearly shown in Figure 1 of the drawing. The bristles will thus be tightly clamped between the inner surface of the ferrule and the outer surface of the cup 13, and the shape ot the brush 17 will thus be maintained despite any rough usage to which the brush may be putI` and for which it is especially designed.
In that form of the device as illustrated in Figures 6 and 7, the brush holder has av twisted isha-nl; 2l, as hereinbefore "described, but instead of extending entirely through the handle 22- it is embedded in a lillinii,
.as of cement or other suitable material bristles comprising the brush 2 8 beingAv formed on the cup 13 and securely held by the ferrule. 7, as in the device above described, it being obvious that either manner disclosed herein for securingthe` shank in the liandlen'iay be en'iployed, and, in fact, that means other than those disclosed may be employed with advantageous results.
I claim:
1. A brush including bristles secured in a loop formed by strands twisted together, a. form over which the bristles are extended forwardly, `said strandsenga'ging and` inclosingaportion ofthe forni and twisted to` gether forwardly ofthe engaged portion to secure, it againstmovement `lengthwise of said strands, and means -for retaining the bristles in forn'aidly arranged position.
A brush including a bunch of bristles secured in a'loop formed by strands twisted on opposite sides of saidloop', a form carried bysaid strands forwardly of said bristles and oyer which the bristles are, extended to impart shape to the bristle bunch, anhandle toy which the strands are'secured, and a ferrule on said handle andbOQperating vwith said ,forni to clamp the bristles in extended position, a portion of said form `being inclosed between saidstrands and the latter being twisted beyond the form to secure it in place.
8. A brush including bristles secured in a loop formed of strands of wire twisted together, an inverted cup-shaped form having aA plurality of perforations through the dome thereof, the free ends of said strands below the ybristles being extended through said perforations and twisted together within said cup-shaped form, and means wedged upon the bristles and cooperating with said fornito distribute the bristles evenly about said form.
il; A brush including bristles secru'ed in a loop formed by strands of wire twisted together to forni said loop and a-l shank, a handle Within which said shank is secured, a cup shaped form secured between the strands and within said loop, and a. fen'ule secured to said handle and'having its walls arranged substantially parallel with the walls of said form to evenly dstrilnite the bristles between them.
' 5. A brush including bristles secured in a loop formed by strands of wiretwisted together to form said loop and a shank, a cup shaped form secured between the strands and within said loop and flaring ontwardly therefrom, a `handle within which said shank is secured@V anda sleeve shaped it'errule fitting with one end 4,upon the handle and with its opposite end eXtending beyond the handle and Haring outwardly lto con fornwith the flaring Shape of said form to distribute the bristles evenly between said ferrule and form. ,i l H, b, LOUIS V.
