Be it known that 1, WILLIAM "W. LAsKER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Looking and Aligning Type Segments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a printing tabulator of the kind adapted to be controlled by perforated cards, and relates more particularly to matter divided from my copending application Serial No. 158,142 filed March 28, 1917, for printing tabulators.
The invention herein described relates particularly to the means for locking and aligning the type segments of said printing tabulator; and, therefore, only as much of the printing tabulator is described herein as is necessary to show the connection between the matter of the original application and the matter divided out and described herein.
While herein and in said application minute details of one of many possible embodiments of the invention are described, the invention is not limited to these since various changes may be made in the details of construction and combination without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
One object of the invention is to improve generally apparatus of this kind.
Another object of the present improvement is to construct a printing tabulator having an improved form of locking and aligning mechanism for the type segments, which will be efiicient in operation and economical in structure.
Still further objects and advantages of the present improvement will be set forth in the following description and drawings in which,

In the said co-pending application means are shown for feeding perforated cards to an analyzer comprising a reci rocating in box provided with the pins a a ted to eel the cards and on finding per orations in the cards to pass through such perforations and to raise registering stops corresponding to perforations, the naught stop being normally raised and adapted by suitable connections to be depressed by the raising of a numeral registering stop.
Referring more particularly to the drawing of the present application, there are shown a lurality of numeral registering stops 10 Fig. 3) of the kind just mentioned. These stops 10 are arranged in rows, and associated with each row is a naught stop 11 and a reciprocating rack bar. Each rack bar 12 is provided with a downward projection 14 adapted to engage the rear face of a raised stop 10 or 11 as the rack is reci rocated forward (to the left, in Fig. 3) y a transverse bar 15, as will be explained.
This transverse 15 engages a drive shoulder 16 on a pivoted bar 18 pivoted at its forward end to the rack bar 12 and yieldably held in raised position by a spring 19 strained between its rear end and a bgacket 20 on the rear end of the rack bar 1 Said pivoted bar, is normally held raised, as just stated, so that the shoulder 16 will be engaged by the transverse rack bar 15. Said pivoted bar 18 is lowered from the normal position to the position shown in Fig. 3 by means of a small lever 21 pivoted at 22 to the rack bar 12, and provided with a slot 24 receiving a pin 25 fixed to the pivoted bar 18. The lower end of the lever 22 engages (as the rack bars and said levers are brought forward) whichever stop 10 or 11 is raised. At this instant, said lower end is raised and the slotted end of the lever 21 is lowered thereby lowering the pivoted bar 18 and the shoulder 16 thereon, thus permitting the transverse bar 15- to more on free from said shoulder, the rack bar 12 being stopped by its shouldered projection 14 engaging behind said raised stop 10.
WVhen the transverse bar 15 moves rearwardly, it engages the shoulder 26 formed on the rack bars 12 and moves all of the rack bars to their rearward position. This rearward movement takes place after the printing has taken place as will be explained.
The bar 15 which as heretofore described, is for the purpose of reciprocating the bars 12 and 18 is itself reciprocated in the following manner, reference especially being made to Fig. 1. The bar' 15 which is rectangular in cross section is rigidly connected at each end to a slide 27, which is reciprocatable between rollers 28 forming guideways therefor. A slot 29 is made in each cheek plate 30 of the frame of the tabulating machine, and in this slot 29 is received a roller 31 revolubly mounted on the rear end of the said slides 27. The front end of the slides 27 are provided with horizontally extending pins 32, which are received in slots 33 formed in the upper ends of levers 34, the lower portion of which are triangularly shaped, one corner being pivoted to stud shafts 35, carried by each cheek plate 30. The other corner of the triangular shaped levers 34 carries rollers 36 which are arranged to roll within cam grooves made in the cam 38 on the shaft 44 (Fig. 4).
Returning now to the reciprocating bars, the top edge of the forward portion of the said bars 12 are provided with gear teeth 49 (Fig. 3) whichare in mesh with a gear 50 secured to type segments 52, which have bearings on a transverse shaft carried between the cheek plates 30. Said segments have an are shaped rear edge provided with gear teeth 54 which will hereafter be described. The front edge of the segments,
52 are also made are shaped and have mounted thereon ten type 55. Reading from the upper edge of the type carrying portion of the segment, the type carried thereby read in sequence, the first type being zero, the next 1 the next 2 etc., the last type on the segment being numbered 9.
Vhen the pins 10 have been set by perforated cards, as explained, and the transverse bar 15 has caused the forward movement of the rack bars 12 until they are stopped by the raised pins 10- or 11, the type segments are stopped with the t pc in printing position in accordance with the position of the raised pins 10 or 11. At this instant paper carried on a suitable paper carriage is pressedagainst the typeand the printing takes place. After the printing takes place the paper is fed, one or more line spaces and is ready for another imprinting. A suitable paper carriage is described in, said co-pending application.
After all of the type segments have been set by the stop pins in position to print data transferred thereto from the cards, means is provided for locking and aligning the type segments so that they may not move during the printing operation. This locking and aligning means will now be described.
A lever 72 (Fig. 1) is provided. having a bifurcated lower end 73 which straddles the main drive shaft 44 which provides the driving means, for the entire type setting and calculating mechanism. This lever 72 is provided with a pin 74 upon which is rotatabiy mounted a roller 75 which is arranged to roll within a cam slot 76 of a cam 77 (Fig. 4). The extreme upper end of the lever 72 is provided with a knife shaped transversely extending arm 80 slidably mounted within a slot 81, within the cheek plates 30. knife shaped member 80, which is termed a detent, are arranged radial to the gear teeth 54 of the type segments and lock said segments from moving, and line up the type.

As these mechanisms are described in detail in said copending application, they need be here described only briefly as follows:
Means are provided for anchoring in raised position the various stop pins 10 as they are actuated, and for holding the zerov stop 11 in position for stopping or permitting to pass the corresponding type setting and tabulating elements. This anchoring means comprises shutters 186 (Figs. 5) pro vided with end lugs 187 extending through openings 189 of the end plates 190. By
' means of these lugs 187 the shutters 186 are adapted to rock relative to the end plates. The upper edge of the shutters have an inclined edge 191 and a forwardly extending arm 192 that is turned at its extreme end to form a stop 193. Each of the shutters 186 is disposed adjacent to one row of stop ins 10 with its inclined edge 191 exten ing toward the pins. In order that the stop pins 10 and zero stops 11 be anchored by the inclined edges 191 they are provided with upper and lower notches 194 and 195, each forming at its upper edge a shoulder adapted to engage the inclined edge 191, so that the sto as 10 will be supported on such inclined ec ge 191.
The lower edges of the notches are inclined to form calm faces over which the edges can ride with facility when the numeral stops 10 .are raised. As the lever 72 moves downward to effect the locking and aligning of the type segments by the bar 80, the slotted end of the arm 211 is lowered and the active end of the arm is raised into engagement with the lower cam face 210 (Fig. 6) thus throwing back the plate 197 and forcing the sides of the recesses 199 against the extensions 192 and forcing back the shutters 186 from contact with the stop pins and releasing the latter to be lowered under the action of the springs 24:0 later to be mentioned.

The front end of the ,links 268 are provided with lugs 230 which are arranged to slide within a recess 231 formed in the rear edge of thenought stop 11.
Suitable springs 240 are provided for the purpose of normally holding the levers 222 down and raising the nought stops 11.

1. In an apparatus of the character described, thecombination of type carriers provided with teeth; a plurality of rows of vertically movable stop pins each provided with a shoulder; pivoted shutters adapted to I engage under the shoulder of any raised stop; a sliding plate adapted when actuated to move said shutters out of engagement with said shoulders and provided with a lower cam face; means controlled by said "pins for positioning the carriers; a rcclprocatory locking bar adapted to be disposed between said teeth; a release arm engaging said cam face; and means for simultaneously and positively reciprocating the looking bar and the release lever.
2. settable members adapted to position the carriers; and means adapted to lock said carriers and to act positively to restore the settable members before the carriers are unlocked and restored to their initial position.
14. In an apparatus of the character described, the combination of type carriers; settable members adapted when set for stopping the carriers in printing position; and
means adapted to lock said carriers in said position and to simultaneously to act positively to restore the settable members.
