UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
CHARLES P. BENOIT, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURNING-IRONS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 53,303, datedJuly 21,1874; application filed May 22, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES PETIT BE- NOIT, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Burning-Iron for a Bung-Hole Burner and Gage, of which the following is a specification:
This invention has for its object to provide a bung-iron, such as is used for enlarging the holes of beer and other casks, with an adjustable gage-sleeve, by which perfect uniformity in diameter of the bung-holes burned by it is secured.
The invention consists in a metal cylinder at the end of a rod or handle, with its outer extremity tapered. On the cylindrical part is sleeved a gage-tube provided with a set-screw to secure it at any point, while it is also at tached by a chain to a collar high up on the handle, by which the sleeve may be drawn up away from the heat while the lower end is in lire.
Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation.
In the drawing, Arepresents an iron bar or handle, having formed or welded on its lower end a cylinder, A, also of iron, of greater diameter than the largest bung-hole. This cylinder is tapered at the end, as shown at A B is a sleeve, loosely fitted on the cylinder A with a collar, I), at the lower end, which serves as a stop to the farther insertion of the taper plug A and another collar, b, at the upper end, in which is tapped alever set-screw, c, to secure the sleeve at any position on the cylinder A. a is a collar, high up on the handle,
and is connected to the sleeve by a chain, d. It is also provided with a set-screw, e, which, when loosened, will allow the operator to slide the collar a still farther up the handle, drawing the sleeve above the cylinder A which can then be placed in the fire and heated without heating the sleeve.
WVhen the cylinder and plug are heated to a red heat, the sleeve may be slipped down until the collar 1) will give the required diameter on the taper end, and set fast, when all bungholes will be burned out to a uniform diameter if the tool be inserted therein, until arrested by said collar 1).
The upper end of the cylinder is spaced off, to show various diameters above the collar b, as it is moved down.
The larger body of metal contained in the cylinder will retain heat much longer than the short taper plug heretofore used, which, together with the certainty of getting holes of uniform diameter without stopping to see how far the plug is inserted, enables the operator to enlarge twice as many bung-holes at a single heat.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with the handle A, provided with the plug A A of the sleeve B, provided with set-screw 0, the chain (1, and the collar to, provided with the set-screw e, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES PETIT BENOIT.
