IVIOTION-IPIGT'URE APPARATUS.
i Application filed. March 15, 1923. Serial No. 625,238.
1 c all whom it may concern: 1
Be 1t known that I, PIERRE SYLVA'IN GAURIA'l,'CltlZ-11 of the French Republic, re-
siding at Paris, in the French Republic, have invented new and useful Improvements in Motion-Picture Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toimprovements in the device for winding the film upon itself in the receiving chamber of a motion picture apparatus, as described in my main patent application filed under N 0. 534,073. In said patent application, the automatic winding of the film upon itself was facilitated by means of a stud carried by an arm rotating in said chamber.
According to the present invention, said stud is carried by a rotatable disc or portion of disc actuated by the actuating handle of the apparatus, while a member provided with a face inclined with respect to the edge of the film causes the edge of the film to constantly bear upon said disc in order to provide for the regular driving and winding of the film.
In the accompanying drawing way of example:
Fig. 1 is a side view with partial section of a. motion picture apparatus provided with the improved device, according to this inventio-n.
Fig. 2 is a front view of the motion pictureapparatus with a cross section of the device according to the invention.
The apparatus shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises: a disc or a portion of a disc, made of any material mounted on an axle 46 and rotating in a circular chamber 51 provided in the base of the apparatus and wherein the portion a. of the film which has been projected is made to enterthrough the opening 52 and perpendicularly to the plane of the disc.
The disc 50, which carries a stud 50 is actuated by the driving mechanism of the c-inematograph, by means of a belt or of suitable gear wheels with a suit-able gear ratio.
A conical segment 54 is combined at its outer part with the cylindrical wall of the chamber 51. The inner face 55 of this segment has the form of a frustnm of av straight cone with circular base, whose larger base given by is placed adjacent the disc 50. Against the smaller base is secured a disc 56 which may be made'of a transparent material, so as to permit inspection, and which is also preferably removably secured, in order to facihtate the access to the mechanism.
The operation of the device is as follows:
During the operation of the motion picture apparatus, the operator turns the handle 26 and the disc 50 is rotated in the direction of the arrow. The film a issuing from the opening 52 upon the inclined part 55 of the conical portion 54 and sliding thereon, the edge of said film is caused to bear upon the disc 50, firstly by the action of gravity, and also after a certain number of turns have been formed, by the action of the centrifugal force due to the rotation of the coil in formation. In its rotation, the disc 50 drives by friction the portion of film entering the chamber 51 through the opening 52 and winds up the same in spiral shape in the space comprised between the disc 50, the plate 56 and the inner face 55 of the ring 54.- All the turns of film, accord ing to the same process, are wound up in superposition upon each other in said space; the stud 50 which is secured to the disc and is perpendicular to the same, facilitates the winding of the film by its constant action on the inner turn of film. Said inner turn serves as a support for the coil which is bein formed and said su ort bein driven V by the stud 50 which imparts to thesame a movement of rotation; this prevents the braking which would take place if the coil should constantly bear upon the bottom of the chamber 51.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: I
1. In a motion picture apparatus, the combination with the driving mechanism for the film, of a receiving chainl'icr for the film, provided at the lower part of the apparatus, and having an opening through which the film is adapted to be led, a disc rotatably mounted in said chamber, means o 'Jeratively connected to said driving meansfor rotating said disc, a member provided with an inclined face adapted to press constantly the edge of the film upon said disc, and a stud carried by said disc, at right angle with the latter.
2. In a motion picture mppuratus, the combination with the driving mechanism for the film, of a receiving chan'lber for the film,
provided at the lower part of the apparatus, and having an opening through which the film is adapted to be led, a disc rotatably mounted in said chamber, means operatively connected tosaid driving means for rotating said disc, a. ring secured to the inner Wall of said chamber, the inner surface of said ring having a truncated cone shape the wider base whereof is adjacent said disc, a plate for closing the opposite base of said 10 ring, and a. stud carried by said disc at right angle with the latter.
In testimony whereof I have si ned my name to this specification.
