Description

April 7, 1925. 1,532,594
H.LU$CHER CAN OPENER Filed Aug. 20. 1924 INVENJ'OR Herman lluficiz er.
I i ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 7, 1925.
HERMAN L'USCHER, OI? FAB, ROCKAWAY, NEW YORK.
CAN OPENER.
Application filed August 20, 1924. Serial No. 733,104.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN LUsoHnn, a citizen of Switzerland, residing at Far Rockaway, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can Openers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in can openers, and it is the principal object of the invention to provide an opener which is equipped with means for duly guiding it during the cutting operations, and which will positively cut the cover without danger for the operator.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a can opener having a pivotally arranged knife, pointed at its end and provided with a hook-shaped head adapted to hold and guide the knife during the cutting operation.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a can opener with an operating handle equipped with anangular, pointed end adapted to enter the can cover in approximately its middle and to provide a support during the operation of the handle in its horizontal position.
It is also one of the objects of the invention to provide a can opener equipped with means for guiding the same during its cutting operation on the head of the can, and with means for allowing an adjustment of the opener to cans of varying widths.
These and other objects of my invention and advantages thereof, will become more fully known as the description proceeds, and will then be specifically pointed out in. the appended claims.
in the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of a can with the opener constructed in accordance with the present invention in its operating position, part of the can wall being broken away.
Figure 2 is a top plan View thereof.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail view of the can opener proper and its co-operating parts in cutting position on a fragmentary portion of the can.
Figure 1 is an enlarged detail side View of the cutting tool in its cutting position.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 4 with the cutting tool about to enter the can.
The can opener comprises a horizontal arm having one of its ends angularly bent to form a finger 11 and then bent again parallel to arm 10 to form a member 12 with a pointed end 13 adapted to be pressed through the cover 1d of a can of ordinary construction in approximately the center thereof having the customary marginal head 15.
Intermediate its ends, the arm 10 carries loosely sliding thereon, a bracket 16 having depending arms 17 and 18 constituting a bearing or support for a stub-shaft or bolt 19 on which is mounted between the arms 17 and 18, .a roller 20 adapted to guide the tool along the marginal bead 15.0f the can during operation.
The shaft 19 carries also, adjacent to the depending arm 17, the cutting tool 21 pivotally secured thereto at its upper end having a frontal cutting edge 22, and a hook end 23.
A pin 24 projecting from the inner face of the arm 17 limits the movement of the tool in one direction, and a handle on the free end of the arm 10 allows the proper operation of the device as follows lVhen it is desired to open a can, point 13 is pressed through the cover in its middle, and arm 10, which has been vertically held, is now turned to assume a substantially horizontal position while member 12 engages the inner or under face of the cover. Then the tool 21 is pressed through the cover, near its marginal head, by moving arm 10 anti-clockwise, so that the tool engages the pin 24. If now the tool is moved in the direction of the motion ofthe hands of a clock, the hook 23 engages under the'cover, while the cutting edge 23 will gradually cut the cover in the usual manner.
It will be clear that changes may be made in the construction of the minor details of my device such as fall within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A can opener comprising an operating arm, a means for guiding and supporting 2. A can opener comprising an operating arm, a handle at one end of said arin, an angular peinted means at the opposite end of said arm adapted to, enter throu h the can cover and support said opener during its operation with the operating arm in horizontal position, a bracket sliding on said operating arin intermediate its ends aliowing the use of the opener on cans of varying Widths, a pair of depending arms on said bracket, a bolt shaft supported by said arms, a guide roller between said arms on said shaft, a cutting tool pivetally held on said shaft between said arms, a pin on the inner ia e of one of said arms for limiting the movement 01' said tool in one direct-ion, a hook-shaped pointed end on said tool adapted to be pressed through the cover and to uide said tool durin the cuttin o iera- D Lion underneath the eoYer, shaped edge on said tool.
In Witness whereof l signature.
and a knife have aliixed my HERMAN LUSCHER.
