HENRY M. CHRISTOFFERSEN, OF SIDNEY, NEBRASKA.
EXERGISING MACHINE.
Application filed February 25, 1924. Serial No. 695,056.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. CHRIS- TOFFERSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sidney, in the county of Cheyenne and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Exercising Machines, of which t-he'following is a specification.
This invention relates to exercising machines and has more particular reference to a machine of this character that is adapted like, for afiording competition between boys, girls, men and women, and one that will not only afford a great amount of exercise to the users thereof, but one that will provide a great amount of amusement not only for the users, but these watching the operation of the device.
The invention relates generally to that form of exercising machine that includes a striking member adapted to be engaged by a mallet whereupon the striking thereof will throw up into the air a guide member, the
height to which the same is knocked indicating the strength of the particular person using the machine, and the primary object of the present invention is to substantially improve and simplify over exercising machines of this general character.
An additional object is to provide a ma chine as set forth, wherein the member that is knocked up into the air is maintained at the greatest height to which the same is forced whereby competitors may ascertain just who has the greatest strength or the greatest driving power.
With the foregoing and other objects in view as the nature of the invention will be better understood, the same comprises the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown. in the accompanying drawing and claimed.
Inthe drawing wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views,
Figure l is longitudinal vertical sectional view of an exercising machine constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of certain correlated parts of the machine, and Figure 3 is a detail transverse sectional view taken substantially upon the line 3-3 of Figure 2, for disclosing more clearly the particular guide means for the before mentioned member that is to be knocked or forced into the air and specifically in a vertically upward direction in a manner hereinafter to be more fully described.
Now having specific 7 reference to the drawing, my novel exercising machine embodies a hollow base or platform that includes a top wall 6, end wall '7 and side walls 8.
Pivotally disposed as at 9 within said hollow platform 5 at a point slightly off-center, is a rocking beam or lever 10 to one end of which is pivotally attached as at 11, a vertically extending pin 12 that extends upwardly through an opening in the top wall 6 of said platform 5 and is equipped with a head 13 whereby said pin may be struck by a mallet or other similar tool for occasioning the rocking of said beam upon its pivot.
Extending downwardly through openings provided in the top wall 6 of the platform 5 adj acentits rearmost end is a pair of vertically dispose-d spaced guide bars or standards l i-1d that are channeled upon their opposed edges for affording a guide for a vertically movable slide board 15. This slide board 15 is of a length substantially equivalent to the length of said guide bars 114: and has upon its face, numerals 16, for indicating in a manner hereinafter described, the approximate strength or driving power of the particular operator of the machine. If desired, the upper end of this slide board may be formed so as to represent the head of any well known character. Upon the back side of this slide board 15 is a ratchet bar 17 adapted to be engaged by a spring cont-rolled bar 18 secured in a man- .ner hereinafter described, to the guidebars or standards, said bar 18 adapted to maintain said slide board in the greatest height to which the same is knocked by a rocking of said beam 10, it being obvious in this instance, that the lower end of said slide board merely rests upon the foremost end of said beam in a manner as clearly shown in Figure 1.
Said ratchet bar co-operating arm 18 is slidably connected at its opposite ends to bolts 19-19, surrounding which upon opposite sides of said bar are coiled springs 20 that serve as a. means for maintaining this bar in contact with the ratchet bar 17 carried by said slide board 15. One end of this bar is formed with a handle extension 21 whereby said bar may be swung away from the ratchet bar 17 in order to allow the slide board to drop to its initial position.
Adjacent the upper ends of said guide bars or standards 1414: is a pair of spaced cross strips 2222 and in this instance, it is to be understood that the numeral upon the board 15 that is disposed between these cross strips 22-22 when said slide board has been knocked to its uppermost position will indicate the strength or driving force of the particular operator of the exercising machine.
It will thus be seen that I have provided a highly novel, efficient and amusive form of exercising machine, and one that will, I believe, meet with all of the requirements fora successful commercial use.
Minor changes may be made in the inventi-on without departing from the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent -1s:
A-n exercising apparatus comprising an elevated platform, vertically disposed bars mounted in parallel relation upon the platform vand provided at their inner opposite edges with guide grooves, pins passing transversely through, the standard and having end portions disposed beyond the rear surfaces of the standards, heads mounted upon the pins, a bar slidably mounted upon the pins and bridging the space between them and provided at a point between the pins with a lip disposed toward the space between the standards, springs mounted upon the @pins and interposed between the bar and the standards, other springs mounted upon the pins and interposed between the bar and the heads of the pins, a board slidably mounted in the grooves of the standards and provided at its rear side with rack teeth which are engageable by the lip of the bar, a lever fulcrumed between its ends under the platform and having one end -disposed under the board and a pin slidably mounted in the platform and resting upon the other end of the lever.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. HENRY M. CHRISTOFFERSEN.
