Application filed March 8, 1924. Serial No. 697,877.
and useful Improvements in Lights, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to automobile accessories, and contemplates the provision of a lamp casing designed and adapted to be arranged on the machine to counteract the glare of the headlights, and thus afford the drivers of approaching machines, as well as pedestrians, a detail view of the vehicle so equipped and the roadway in the vicinity of the machine, with a view of making it easier and less dangerous to pass such vehicles at night-time.
The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood when the fol lowing detailed description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as claimed.
In the drawing forming part of this application, like numerals of reference indi cate similar parts in the several views, and wherein:
Figure l is a view showing an automobile equipped with the attachment forming the subject matter of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a detail view of the attachment removed.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33-of Figure 2.
The attachment forming the subject mat ter of the present invention consists of a lamp casing 10, adapted to be arranged beneath and secured to the underside of one of the running boards A of the machine adjacent the rear end thereof, for the purpose of securing the lamp casing to the running board, the casing 1s provided with a plurality of openings 11 to receive suitable fastening elements adapted to be driven or passed through openings in the running board. The manner in which the attachment is mounted on the machine is clearly illustrated in Figure 1. The casing includes a reflector 12 and an electric light bulb 13 which can be supplied with current from the storage battery of the machine,
while the bottom wall of the casing consists of a glass panel 14 which is concaved as shown and held within the lamp casing by means of a wire element 15. This element is of a resilient character and is adapted to snap into the grooves 16.. It will be noted that the opposed end walls 17 of the lamp casing have their lower edges curved to conform to the shape of the bottom wall and allows the light to be projected beyond the sides of the car, thereby illuminating the roadway directly under the car and at the sides thereof. This lamp attachment will not only afford drivers of other vehicles as well as pedestrians a proper view of the roadway and the position of the machine so equipped, but will also operate to counteract the glare of the headlights of the machine, making it easier or much safer for approaching vehicles to pass when driving at night-time.
While it is believedthat from the fore going description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent, I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to what is herein shown and described and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall Within the scope of what is claimed.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
An automobile attachment comprising a box like lamp casing secured beneath the running board of the automobile in an inverted position, an electric light bulb arranged in the casing, a reflector therefor, a transparent panel constituting the bottom wall of said casingand of convex formation in cross section, the opposed side walls of'said casing having their lower edgessimilarly curved, whereby the light rays are permitted to project thcrerebeneath at both sides of the machine.
In testimony whereof I allix my signature.
CHESTER ARTHUR STEWART.
