Be it known that I, FRANK S. JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia d State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slotting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide an improved slotting machine, commonly known as al slotter, which will be so constructed to render it more easy to control and operate than other slotters made prior to my invention. y
Another object is to so make my improved slotter that various feeds may be effected without requiring the change or application of gear wheels or the like.
A further object is to make my improved machine of a greatly simplified construction and so that the parts will be durable and efcient in operation.
These objects. and other advantageous ends which will bc described hereinafter, I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a slotter having parts made in accordance with my invention,

two-arm lever 42 is pivoted onan arm 43 which projects from the bracket 32; the opposite ends of said two-arm lever being located at opposite sides ofi'tspivotal connection with the arm- 43fand operative to engage the respective clutch collars 40' and 41 in a manner clearly shown in Figure 2.' Under normal conditions' as illustrated in Figure 2 the clutch collars 40 and 41 are out of engagement with the adjacent. clutch 'faces 33 and: 39-so that during a rotation of the shaft 23 no motion will bel imparted to either ofthe shafts 12 or 13. lf, however; the two-arm lever 42 is swung in one direction to push the clutch collar 40 into engagement with the clutch faceA 38 the movement of the shaft 23 will be imparted to the shaft 12 to rotate the same andv thereby move the table 11 transversely of theb'ase 9. On the other hand if the two-arm lever is swung in an opposite direction the clutch collar 40 will be pulled ont of engagement with the clutch face 38; thereby stopping the movement of the shaft 12 and will throw the clutch collar 41'.' into clutching engagement withV the clutch face" 39. The movement of the shaft 23 will then be imparted to the worm shaft 13 for the purpose of rotating the table 11. It is t-husl obvious'that with. my construction as just described that it is unnecessary to apply or transfer any gears when it is de'- siredto rotate either of thel shafts 12 and l13 to impart either' a transverse or rotatable movement to the work table. yFurthermore when the' two-arm lever 42 is moved into the positionv shown in Figure 2 both of the shafts 12 and 13 will be stopped and it isl aneasy matter for a workman merely by pushing the two-arm lever at one side of its pivot to cause the operation of the shaft adjacent that side of the lever.
During the operation of a machine of this type the operator is often called from one side of the machine to the other and by the provision of the levers 27 and 23 the opera-- tor is enabled to stop or start the operation oft-hey shaft 23 at will without requiring that he walk around the base of the machine; which is generally long,l in order to startor stop the movement of the shaft 23.
In order to operate and control the longitudinal movement olf the table 11 along the base 9 with respect to the ram 44 l provide the following mechanism. The shaft 15 has a bevel gear 45 secured thereto which meshes with a bevel gear 46 on a short transverse shaft 47 having a bearing 48 formed by a projection of thev base 9; said base being made hollow as clearly shown in cross section in Figure 2. A bevel gear 49 is secured to the shaft 47 within the base 9 and meshes with another bevel gear 50; said bevel gear being secured to a sleeve 51 which is rotatably mounted in a bearing 52 in axial alignment: with the shaft 1.4 which when rotated; as above stated7 will impart a longitudinal movement to the carriage 10 and table 11. The shaft 14 extends freely through the gear 50' and sleeve 51 and' has a clutch collar 53v slidably keyed thereon and adapted to move lengthwise on the shaft 14 to engage a clutch face 54 on lthe bevel gear 501. The bracket 32 has an arm 61 which sup ports `an index plate 62 through which passes the worm shaft 13; said; index plate having divisional' 'markings' in the form of holes 63 which are adapted to be engaged by a spring pressed pirr 64 carried by an arm 65 secured to the shaft 13. Thus it is possible by the registration of the pin`-64 with the holes inthe index plate to rotate the table 11 any Vpredeterminedv distance and secure the same in the desired position by permittingthe'pini 64 to engage within the intended indicating hole.
The rams of slotting machines are usually connected to the connecting rod' and coun'- ter-weight lever by a number of separate elements which renders the cost of manufacture and assembly expensive and also requires separate fitting of the parts so 'that they may be connected together. ln my present invention I provide a single suspension link which may be easily con* nected tothe connecting rod, arin and counter-weight leverV such for example as shown in Figures 1 and The ram 44 has a slot 66 extending vertically therethrough and my improved suspension link 67 has an integral block portion 63: slidable in al guideway 69 with respect to the height of the rain 44. The block 63 is normally held to the rain by means of a bolt 70 which is connected to the blocl portion 63 and has a nut l71 for bearing against the front portion 72 of the rain. An adjusting screw 73 extends through a tapped hole 7-1 in the block portion 68 and upon loosening the nut 7l, the ram can be moved upwardly or downwardly due to the rotation of the adjusting screw 7 3; said adjusting screw having no longitudinal movement relatively to the ram lle. The body portionp7 5 of the suspension link e7 has a cavity 7 6 in which fits the upper end of the connecting rod 77; it being noted that the connecting rod imparts movement in the usual manner to operate the ram. A bifurcated portion 78 projectsy upwardly from the body portion and between the furcations is mounted the end of the counter-Weight lever 7 9; the latter being secured between the furcations by a pivot pin 8O in similar manner. A pivot pin 8l extends through the body portion 7 5 and forms a pivotal connection for the top of the connecting rod 77. ln this manner a single suspension link is operative to connect the connecting rod to the ram and to connect the ram with the counterwveight lever 79 and also permits of the adjustment of the ram vertically With respect to the Work table. lt is obvious from the foregoing description that a slotter having the features of my invention thereon can be easily operated to provide the vari-v ous features and that they can be controlled from opposite sides of the base and vfurthermore provision 1s made to permit a quick operative connection for either the transverse longitudinal or vrotatable movement for they Work table.
While I have described my invention as taking a particular form, it Will be understood that the various parts of my invention may be changed Without departing from the spirit thereof, and hence l do not limit myself to the precise construction set forth, but consider that I am at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly come' Within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters latent is l. A machine of the character described including a WorkA table; a shaft rotatable to effect a rotation of said table; a second shaft rotatable to impart an independent movement to said table; driving means normally out of Adriving connection with both of said shafts, and common means movable to selectively connect said driving means of said shafts ycan be rotated.

A. machine of the character describedr including.a-work table; a shaft rotatable to effect a rotation of said table; a second shaft rotatable to impart an independent movement to said table; a third shaft adapted to be opera-tively connected to either of said first shafts; a base forv supporting said work table; a shaft extending transversely through said hase and having hand levers thereon at opposite sides of said hase; a driving clutch collar; `a clutch collar slidably connected to said third shaft; automatically operated means for dri-ving said first clutch collar, and means on said transverse shaft operative to move said second clutch collar into clutching engagement with said driving clutch collar when said transverse shaft is moved hy either of said hand levers.

Amachine of the character described work table; clutch mea-ns for effecting operation of said moving means; automatically operative driving means for connection with said clutch means; a controlling shaft extending transversely of said base and having hand levers connected thereto and located at opposite sides of the base, and means on said controlling shaft for effecting movement of said clutching means into connection with said driving means when said controlling means is moved by either of said hand levers.

A machine tool comprising the comhination of a bed, an upright there on. tool supporting means on the upright, tool operating means, a saddle longitudinally slidable on the bed, a slide transv rsely slidable on the saddle, a work table rotatably mounted on the slide, a screw for moving the saddle longitudinally, a second screw for moving the slide transversely, a shaft extending parallel with the said second screw and operatively connected to the table for rotating the same, a second shaft extending parallel with the bed, gearing for operatively connecting the second shaft with the first named shaft and second screw, means for operating the second shaft intermittently or continuously, and means at the front of the machine whereby the operator may connect either the second screw or the first shaft with the second shaft.
