Be it known that I, KARL O. NELsoN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of l lilwaulree, in the county of Milwaukee and Qtate of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baling Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
The invention relates to presses with special reference to baling presses of the type described in my copending application, Serial No. 512,086, filed Nov. 1st, 1921.
It contemplates especially a structure adapted to give the greatest pressure at the end of the pressing operation and aims especially to prevent tilting of the platen by providing for the application of pressing force at the ends of the platen rather than at the middle thereof. The invention utilizes a screw to provide pressing force and avoids the diiliculties common to screw operation in the artwhich results in a binding distortion of the screw and undue friction thereon.
An important objectof the invention is the disposing of the thrust bars in such manner as to prevent the platen from tilting so as to have one end thereof higher than the other.
An object is the provision of a hopper to facilitate the proper positioning of matter to be baled.
An object is the provision of means for taking up the weight imposed upon the thrust bars that are: used to depress the platen that the screw will not have to bear this tremendous stress. I accomplish this by utilizing rollers for the toggle arms.
Another and important object of my invention is the provision of means for preventing twisting of the thrust bars resulting from the tilting of the platen and for preventing bendin of the screw. These evils are prevented by the provision of guides connected with the thrust bars and the travelcr positioned on the screw.
l i'ith the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceds, the invention resides in the novel con strnction, combination and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that such changes in the precise embodiment of the Serial No. 612,999.

In the accompanying drawing, is illustrated one complete example of the physical embodiment of the present invention constructed according to the best mode so far devised for the practical application of the principles thereof.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the press with the hopper broken away.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of part of the device with the end wall broken away.
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
The press box is supported by frame bars 11 and provided with a suitable door 12 for the removal of the bale. The bottom piece 13 is connected with the lower end portions of the frame bars and platen 14 is guided by the frame bars. The platen 14 is provided with pairs of apertured lugs 15. A thrust bar 16 is pivoted to a pair of the ears located at the extreme left end and forward part of the platen. A thrust bar 17 is pivoted to cars at the rearward part of the platen, the pivot point being spaced inwardly from the end more than in the case of thrust bar 16. The two bars are substantially parallel. A thrust bar 18 is pivoted to ears at the right end and forward partof the platen. A thrust bar 19 is pivoted at the rearward part of the platen more closely to the right end. parallel.
A gear 20 is rigid with screw 21 which is threaded left and right and carried by bearings 22 supported by I beams 28. Frame bars 11 on I beams 28 carry guide rods 25 on which sleeves 26 are slidably positioned. Sleeves 26 are secured in any desired man ner, to spacer arms 27 aflixed to lateral extensions 28 of travelers 29, each traveler having two extensions thereon spaced apart along the screw. Traveler 29 is threaded to correspond with the threads of screw 21. Each spacer arm 28 carries roller 31 contacting with the lower surface of I beam 23. Each thrust bar is apcrtured to receive the spacer arm and bars 17 and 18 have sleeves l7 and 18' respectively thereon each enveloping a spacer 28.

As they approach, the pressing force exercised becomes continually greater, the nearer the position of the thrust bars to the vertical, because as they approach the vertical, a proportionately greater lineal space is covered by the traveler 29 in proportion to the upward movement of platen 14. In this way, toggle action of great power is exercised. The greater force exerted on the thrust bars is not transmitted to screw 21, however, as it is taken up by rollers 31. These rollers therefore, are effective to prevent a distortion of screw 21 and relieve un- Spacer arms 28 are maintained in a direction substantially perpendicular to screw 21 by sleeves 26, sliding 3n guides 25. These sleeves are useful, therefore, in preventing either of thrust bars 16 and 17 from advancing with respect to the other because of tilting of the platen and serve to prevent bending of screw 21 and relieve undue friction thereon.
It will be not-ed that the point of location of lugs 15 is such as to prevent tilting of the platen. By making the pivot points of bars 16 and 17 at different distances from the left end and. the pivots of bars 18 and 19 at different distances from the right end, all possibility of tilting or angling in such way as to permit one end to be higher or lower than the other is prevented. Sleeves 17 and 18 prevent angling of bars 17 and 18 with respect to the spacer arms and operate to prevent tilting of the platen.
The front of the press box is formed into a hopper 32 which when the platen is lifted facilitates the loading of the press with ma terial to be compressed.
Claims:
1. In a press, the combination of a movable platen, a pair of crossheads, means for moving said crossheads towards and from each other, thrust receiving guides for said crossheads, a pair of links pivoted at longitudinally spaced points to said crosshead at one end, and pivoted at longitudinally spaced points to said platen at the other end of such links.
2. In a press, the combination of a movable platen, a pair of crossheads, means for moving said crossheads towards and from each other, thrust receiving guides for said crossheads, pairs of laterally staggered links pivoted at longitudinally spaced points to said crosshead at one end, and pivoted at longitudinally spaced points to said platen at the other end of such links, the links of one pair crossing the links of the other pair.
