IMPROVEMENT IN WROUGHT-IRON COLUMNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,170. dated July 21, 1874; application filed June 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES HENRY KEL- LOGG, of Bufialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in Wrought Iron Columns, of which the following is a specification:
The invention relates to a wrought-iron column for viaducts, piers, bridgebuilding, &c.; and the invention consists in its construct-ion, as hereinafter fully explained.
The drawing represents a plan of a transverse section of my column.
AAAAreprcsent a series of channel-bars or upright sections composing the wrought-iron column. These columns, however, may be composed of three, four, or more channel-bars, as may be desired,'the drawing showing one constructed in four sections. The web a of each of these channel-bars is curved inwardly, substantially as shown, and their sides have formed on them the usual flange I). These channel-bars, when joined by riveting the webs together, as shown at c a, form a column hollow in the center, and with complete broad flanges, substantially as shown.
The advantages of this peculiarly-constructed column are, that it combines the greatest amount of strength in a comparatively small space, which also allows a simpler and cheaper construction than most columns for similar purposes with which I am acquainted. Furthermore, it is especially adapted for via-ducts, as the broad-faced flanges b I) give a square face for fastening thereto laterals and struts, thereby doing away with cast-iron joint-blocks. This is an important advantage.
I-am' acquainted with patented columns constructed of outwardly-curved sections, and also with square uprights or sides, their flanges joined together, but none formed like mine, and the webs riveted as shown.
I claim- A wrought-iron column composed of three or more channel-bars, A A, curved inwardly, and their webs a a riveted together at 0, each side of each channel-bar having a flange, which, when united, forms a complete flange, b, as and for the purposes hereinafter specifled.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. g
CHARLES H. KELLOGG. \Vitnesses:
J. R. DRAKE, T. H. PARSONS.
