W. HARTMANN GRIPPING MECHANISM FOR CINEMATOGRAPHIC CAMERAS AND PROJECTING APPARATUS Filed Nov. 18. 1924 Patented Mar. 24, 1925.
WILHELK HARTMANN, 0F VIENNA, AUSTRIA.
en-rrrme MECHANISM FOR onvnnnroennrmc oa nnaas Ann BROJECTING APPARATUS.
Application filed November 18, 1924. Serial No. 750,639,.
To all whom it may concern-r Be it knownthat I, lVILHn M TIARTMANN, a citizen of the Republic of Austria, residing at Vienna, Austria, have invented certain new and useful ln' provements in Gripping Mechanism for Ginematographic Cameras and Projecting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gripping and actuating devices for use in Connection with cameras and like photographic apparatus which employ film of the type used in motion picture machines.
The invention has for its obje t to provide a simple and inexpensive device including a reciprocal button or handle associated with film engaging and actuating levers adapted during movement of the button in one direction to engage and advance the film strip and, during movement in the opposite direction to disengage and move independently of the film strip.
In the accompanying drawing wherein an approved embodiment of the invention is illustrated Figure 1 is an edge elevation of the film engaging and actuating device, a portion of the base or supporting plate being broken away and shown in section.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the device, one of the guides being broken away.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view thereof and,
Figure at is a cross-sectional view on the line 4l4 of Figure 2.
Referring to the drawing in detail the numeral 1 indicates a. suitable supporting or base elementupon which the parts of the film engaging and actuating device are mounted. Spaced longitudinal guides 2 are fixed along the upper longitudinal edges of the support 1 and the oil-set inner edges thereof confine and guide two slide plates 3 and 9. The slide plate 3 is arranged upper-most While the slide plate 9 is confined between it and the base 1.
The upper slide plate 3 is provided with three pairs of lateral extensions 6, 6 and 6*, the extensions 6 and 6 being arranged to slide beneath the guide flanges 2 and the extensions 6 being laterally oil'set so as to over-lie the guide flanges 2, the extreme ends of the extensions 6 being turned upwardly and apertured to receive the pivot pins 8 carried by the medial. portions of a pair of angular levers 7.
The plate 9 is provided with two sets of lateral extensions 10 and 10. the extensions 10 being arranged in the flange guides 12 and the extensions 10 being ofi' -set so to over lie the guide flanges The extreme ends of the extensions 10 are bent so as to over-lie the inner ends of the angular levers 7 and are provided with slots 21. and receiving pins 11 projecting laterally from the adjacent portionsof the levers 7. V i
The slide plates 3 and 9 are capable of relative sliding movement in the guide flanges 2, such relative movement being limited by the space between. the extensions 6 and 6 of the plate 3 between which the extensions 10 of the plate 9 are located. The shank 5 of an operating button or handle 5 is movable in a longitudinal slot l provided. in the base 1 and being rigidly attached to the plate 8 causes longitudinal movement of the latter between the guides 2 as the button 5 is reciprocated. The plate 9 is provided with a slot: receiving the shank 5 of the operating button and permitting the necessary limiting movement of the plate 8 relative to the plate 9.
The film (not shown) is retained in proper relation to the engaging and actuating device by a suitable guide 12 and the angular levers 7 are provided at the ends opposite the pins 11 with laterally projecting teeth 23, the latter being so disposed as to be in line with and enter the perforations along the edges of the conventional type of motion picture film.
In operation, when the handle 5 is moved to the left, Figs. 1 and 2, the friction developed between the surface of the base 1 and the plate 9 tends to momentarily retard the movement of the latter but as the extensions 6 on the plate 3 engage the extensions 10 on the plate, the latter is moved as a unit with the plate 3. During the initial movement of the plate 3 to the left independently of the plate 9 the displacement of the pins 11 relative to the pivotal axes of the levers 7 causesthe latter to so tilt it that the teeth 23 thereof enter the marginal perforations in the film strip and the latter is moved along the motion of the plates 3 and 9 and the handle 5 is continued. When the handle 5* ismoved to the opposite end of the slot at and the return movement thereof is begun, the plate 9 remains stationary until the plate 3 has been so advanced as to engage the extensions 6 with the extensions 10 of the plate 9, whereupon the latter is moved to the right along With the plate 5. Incident to the slight relative movement between the plates 3 and 9 the engagement of the, pins in the extensions 10 of the plate 9 cause the angular levers 7 to tilt in the opposite direction thereby wvithdrawing the teeth :23 thereof from the perforations in the film strip and permit the return of said levers together With the plates 3 and 9 and the handle 5,
to initial position.
I claim a l. A device of the character described including a base member, guides on saidmember, relatively movableplates slidably confined by said guides, film strip engaging and actuating members pivotally mounted on one of said plates, pivotal connections be-' tween the other plate and, said levers arranged at points eccentric to the pivotal axes thereof whereby during movement of the first mentioned plate relative to the second mentioned plate the displacement of the pivotal connections relative to the axis of pivotal mounting of the film strip engaging and actuating members causes a corresponding swlnging movement of said lovers in one direction or another, and a cluding a base, guides on said base, rela-' tively movable plates slidably confined by said guides, lateral extensions carried by one of said plates, film engaging and actuating levers pivotally secured to certain of said extensions, extensions carried by the other plate and arranged between certain or the extensions on the first mentioned plate and adapted to engage with the latter Where by the relative movement of said plates is limited, and means connecting the extensions of the second mentioned plate With said levers at points eccentric to the pivotal axes of the latter whereby incident to the relative movenrent ot the plates the levers are caused to oscillate, and a. handle carried by the first mentioned plate;
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature.-
WILHELM HARTMANN.
