One object Vof this invention is to provide a reel of such construction that the flanges will have a maximum strength and will be free of any sharp corners or projections which might injure the hands' of the operator when in use.
Another object is to provide a reel of this class having circular recesses inthe inner faces of the flanges to receive the ends of the hollow core upon which the coil wire is formed.
A further object is to provide a reel of' this class in which one flange is removable to permit the loading and unloading of coils of Wire on the reel, and which .ange is locked in position by a single nut.
A still further object is to provide a reel having the novel construction, design and combination of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

Referring more ings, my improve reel, which is formed from aluminum or the like for the sake of particularly to the draw- 5 which lightens the hub structure. The end of the hub 2 opposite the flange 4 is reduced, forming a bearing portion 6 and a shoulder 6a, anda second removable flange 7 having an aperture 7a therein, is adaptedV to fit snugly around the bearing portion 6 andbear against the shoulder 6a. A dowel pin '8 is secured in the shoulder 6a and extends through a suitable aperture in the flange 7 to hold it against rotation and to center said flange.
The hub 2 is further reduced beyond the portion 6 and screw threaded as at 10 to receive a nut l1 having an enlarged flat face adapted to engage and hold the flange 7 1n position.
The flanges are each provided with circular recesses 12 in their inner faces to receive the ends of the hollow core members 13 of the preformedcoils of Wire 14 adapted to be mounted on the reel.
The flanges 4 and 7 are further provided with radially disposed closed end slots or openings 15 and the hub 2 is provided with longitudinal grooves or slots 16 on a line with the slots l5. The lower ends of the slots or openings 15 are in alinement with the bottom of the grooves or slots 16, so as to permit free passage of a binding wire used in tying or binding the coils of wire before they are removed from the reel.
Heretofore when reels of this Vclass were provided with slots or openings in the flanges, the slots or openings opened through the edge of the flanges, thusdividing the flanges into segments and greatly weakening the flanges and also being the source of considerable trouble in that the wire being uncoiled from the reel would become caught in the openings and break, and the open ends -of said slots also were hard 0n the operators hands.
With the present type of closed ended slots or openings all of the above difficulties are overcome.
Flanges 4 and 7 are provided with small apertures 18 adjacent their edges, through which the loose end of a coil of wire is adapted to be forced to temporarily hold it until the coil can be properly bound.
The nut 11 has a serrated peripheral face or surface and is also provided with suitable Vble encountered in storing an de ressions or apertures 21 to receive a suitable wrench or tool for operating it.
In Figure 4 I have shown a pers ective view of the coils of wire 14 adapte to be used with this improved reel. These coils are wrapped on a tubular filler or core 13 of vpasteboard or the like, which are of such size as to fit snugly on the hub 2 and are secured by binding Wires 22. The core 13 is adapted to be used only once and to be destroyed When the wire 1s removed 'there-Y from, thus eliminating theex ense and troureturning the wooden reels and cores commonly in use.
My improved form of reel may be used either for forming or dispensing coils of wire. If used for forming coils, a filler 13 is placed onthe hub 2, fiange 7 is placed in position on the bearing portion 6 and nut 11 is screwed home to lock said fiange in osition. The wire is then wrapped on the ler to form a coil of suitable dimensions. After sufficient wire is wrapped, the free end of the Wire is inserted in the apertures 18 in the fiange 4to hold it from unwrapping, and binder wires 22 are then passed throu h the slots or o enings 15 and grooves 16 an lapped over die coiled wire and secured to hold the coil. The nut 11 is then removed and flange 7 and the coil of Wire removed from the hub 2.
If used as a dispensing reel, a coil of wire suitably bound, as shown in Figure 4, is mounted on the hub 2. The flange 7 is placed in position and locked by the nut 11. The binding wires are then cut and the coil used. If desired to change the wire on the reel before it is all used, suitable binding wires 22 are assed through the slots or openings 15 an grooves 16 and lapped over the coil and secured to hold the unused portion of the coil from unwrapping. The nut 11 is then removed to permit the removal of the Bange 7 and unused portion of the coil.
While I have shown and described only one articular embodiment of my invention it w1 l be expressly understood that I do not Wish to be limited thereto since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim- 1. A reel for wire or the like comprising a hub, said hub having a bearing aperture for mounting the reel on a shaft for rotartion and also being provided with a recess enterin from one end thereof to lighten said hu said hub being further provided with a plurality of lon itudinal grooves on the perlphery thereof, anges on saidhub, having radially disposed elongated closed ended o enings registering with the grooves in said ub, said openings permitting said fianges to have a continuous smooth periphery and strengthening said flanges, said flanges being spaced apart to hold a preformed coil of Wire therebetween, said wire being formed on a hollow core, and each of said fianges having their inside faces provided with circular recesses to receive the ends of said core, one of said fianges being 'fixed to Said hub, the other of said fianges havin'r a centrally arranged aperture therein and3 being removably fitted over a portion of said hub, and a nut threaded on one end of said hub and bearing against said last named flange to hold it in operative position.

A reel for Wire or the like comprising a hub, said hub having provisions for mounting the reel for rotation, and having a plurality of longitudinal grooves on thc periphery thereof, fianges on said hub having radially disposed elongated closed ended openings registering with the grooves in said hub, said openings permitting said fianges to have a continuous smooth peri hery and strengthening said fian es, said anges being spaced apart to ho d a preformed coil of wire therebetween, said wire being formedk on a hollow core, and each of said flanges having their inside faces provided with circular recesses to receive the ends of said core, one of said flan es being fixed to said hub, the other of sai flanges having a centrally arranged aperture therein and being removably fitted over a portion of said hub, and a nut threaded on one 'end of said hub and bearing against said last named flange to hold it in operative position.
3. A reel for wire or the like comprising a hub, said hub having provisions for mountthe reel for rotation, and having a luin .ra/ity of longitudinal grooves on the per1pher thereof, anges on said hub having radial y disposed elongated closed ended openings registering with the grooves in said hu said openings permitting said flanges to have a continuous peri hery and strengthening said flanges, said anges being spaced apart to hold a preformed coil of Wire therebetween, one of said fianges being fixed to said hub, the other of said flanges having a centrally arranged aperture therein and eing) removably fitted over a portion of said hu and a nut threaded on one end of said hub and bearing against said last named flange to hold it in operative osition.
