IMPROVEMENT IN THE MODES OF OPERATING SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 153,112, dated July 14, 1874 application filed June 9, 1874.

To alt lwhom -it may concern.:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. RACE, of. Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of N ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachment to a Device for Preventing Back Motion; and I do hereby declare thc following' to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to'an improvement in the mechanism pertaining to the prevention of back motion of the shaft during the back motion of the wheel of a sewing-machine, and is designed to enable the operator to reverse the motion of the shaft slightly, if necessary, to release the needle from the fabric without reversing the wheel.
In devices for preventing' the back motion of the shaft during the back motion of the wheel, there is generally no provision made for reversing the shaft should it become desirableas, for instance, to release the needle or reverse it slightly without taking another stitch, which my invention contemplates.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my improvement attached to the shaft of a sew-- ing-machine. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the improvement attached to the collar upon which the wheel is mounted.
My invention consists in the attachment to the shaft A at anysuitable point, preferably to the end of the shaft adjacent to the wheel, A
else to the collar of the wheel by which the latter is fastened to the shaft, of a thumb-wheel, B, whereby the operator upon a machine, the wheel of which may be revolved backward without reversing the motion of the shaft A, may reverse the shaft slightly when necessary, by turning the thumb-wheel B with the hand, and thus reverse the motion of the needle without moving the wheel.
The attachment B is not necessarily fastened to the shaft at the extremity thereof, nor in the manner shown but the manner show is convenient and simple.
That I claim is- The device herein described, consist-ing of the thumb-wheel B, securely attached to the shaft A, for giving to the shaft of asewing'- machine, the drive-wheel of Which machine admits of backward motion without moving the shaft, a slight reverse motion, substantially as and for the purposes described.
