Be it known that I, ALFRED A. E. HANSEN,
. a citizen of the United-States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia is and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain-new and useful Improvements in 'Self-Feeding and Renewable Eraser Attachments, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention relates to eraser attachments for pencils and particularly for pencils embodying independent leads and means for feeding the leads one at a time outwardly of the pencil, such as that disclosed in my co-pending application filed Oct. 13, 1021, Serial No. 507,513, and the primary object of the present invention is to provide a novel pencil end embodying an improved means for supporting an eraser, whereby the eraser can be removed when worn and replaced by a new one and whereby the eraser can be exposed to view when needed and so'tha-t the entire length of the eraser can be conveniently used up and thereby prevent Waste of the eraser.
A further object of the invention is to rovide 'a novel means for connecting-the lmproved attachment to various types of pencils or the like embodying independent leads and ordinary pencils. 1
A. still further ob'ect of the invention is to provide an improved eraser attachment for pencils of the above character, which is durable and eflicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market and incorporated with pencils at a minimum cost. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification,- and in which drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved eraser end showing the same attached to a fragment of the pencil, which can be of the type shown in my copending application.

Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 100 indicates the improved eraser attachment which can be as sociated with a pencil 110 which can he of the type shown in the co-pending application or other similar pencils having a detachable cap on the outer end thereof.
The improved attachment 100 includes a cylindrical body 101, the lower end of which can be flared as at 102, and internally threaded as at 103 for engagingthe pencil 110. The cylindrical body 101 adjacent to the flared portion 102 is provided with an inner partition wall 104, which can be provided with an axial opening 105. The inner sur' face of this cylindrical body 101 is provided with spiral guide ribs 106, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described. eraser body 107, of such a diameter as to readily fit within the cylindrical body 101, is fitted in the same, and 105 as shown the outer surface of the eraser body 107 is provided with spiral grooves 108 for the reception of the spiral guide ribs 106. The body 101 also has fitted therein a coil spring 109, the inner end of which is provi ed with a bent terminal 111 for insertion into the opening 105. The outer end of this spring engages the eraser body and forms a support for the same. This spring is of just a sufficient tension to hold the eraser body against inward movement when the eraser is being used.
When it is desired to move the eraser body outward after the same has become worn, it is merely necemary to grasp the end of the same with the-fingers and give the same a slight twisting movement and pull the same outwardly. The spiral rigs, as stated, tend to hold the eraser body in position reventing the same from slipping out acci enta'lly, and the coil spring functions as to lift and support the eraser.
It is obvious that the outer surface of the body 101 can be milled or provided with threads in order that a thereon to facilitate t e adjusting of the eraser body 107. As shown, the pencil end is provided with a pocket clip' 112.

The attachment A 1s particularlyadapted to be associated with the pencil B of the type disclosed in my copending application or in other similar pencils having a detachable cap on the outer end thereof.
The improved attachment A includes a cylindrical body 10, which is provided with interior threads 11, which may be cut into the same. These threads perform a dual function, first for connecting the attachment to the barrel 12 of the pencil B, which as shown is provided with exterior threads, and second for feeding the eraser follower in the body 10, as will be hereinafter more fully described. a
The extreme outer end of thebody 10 is provided with an annular flange 15, for receiving a cap 16 thereon. This ca 16 may be made of any desired material, ut preferably of hard metal, and is provided adjacent to its inner end with an annular groove17. A connecting ringor collar 18 engages in the groove 17 and around the flange 15, and unites the cap 16 to the cylindrical body 10 for a purpose which will hereinafter more fully appear. The cap 16 is supported for rotatable movement by means of the connecting band,'barre'l or co la r 18. If desired, the outer end of the cap 16 -may be bevelled or cutinwardly, as at 19, so as to form a substantial continuation of the eraser body 10 when the outer end grip may be obtained thereof is flush with the outer end of the ca 16. The outer end of the cap 16 is pre erably knurled, or otherwise serrated, as at 21, so that a firm grip may be had on the same.
If desirable, the outer surface of the body 10 may also be provided with longitudinally extending ribs 22, which will'permit a lead grip to be had on the body. The cap 16 18 provided with a relatively large bore 23 and the inner surface of the bore is provided with inwardly extending extensions 24, which are arranged in spiral or stepped formation. There may be as many of these extensions 24 as is practical or desirable and it is preferred that at least three of the said extenssions be used.
The eraserproper 20 can, of course, be constructed .in any preferred manner of any desired material, and is provided with spiral grooves 25, which are adapted to receive the extensions 24. This prevents the free outward movementof the eraser and permits the same to be conveniently held within the cap 16. 'These roowes 25 may or may not be provided in the eraser body 20 as is desired, as the eraser body may be felt plain and the projections 24 will cut their ways into the surface of the eraser body as the same is forced into the cap. The inner surface of the eraser body is provided with a conical depression 27, the purpose of which will be hereinafter more fully described.
In order to feed the eraser body 20 out which freely extend guide rods 34. These rods 34 have their free ends secured in any preferred manner to thecap 16, to permit movement of the rods when the ca rotated. As shown by way of examp e, these rods *are -threaded intosuitable sockets formed in the inner ends of the caps. The forwardends of the rods 34 are provided with heads 35 for limiting the inward movement of the follower 30 on the rods.

The rotation of the cap 16 will turn t e followe'r' 30 throu h the medium of the rods 34, and as the ollower 1s threadably connected to the body 10, the the follower 30 will be moved outwardly, which will force the eraser body 20 outwardly.
When the eraser has become worn to such a point that 'it cannot be used any more, it is merely necessary to grasp the stub of the eraser with the fin ers and ull the same outwardly with a slight twisting movement. A new eraser body can be then inserted within the cap.
It is of course ap arent that the cap 16 can be connected to t e body 10 in numerous other ways than that shown in Figures 5 and 6, and it is also apparent that the body 10 can be connected to the barrel 12 of the pencil in other ways than that shown. In Figure 8 is shown a modified means for connecting the cap to the shell or body, which consists in providing a body 50, referably formed of sheet metal, having t reads 56 stamped into the same for engaging threads similar in form on the body 12 of the pencil B. In this form the outer end of the body is turned over to provide an annular reinforcing and retaining ring 57, which is adapted to rotatably receive a cap 58, which is formed similar to the cap 16. This cap 58 receives an eraser body 20, the same as the eraser body in the form above described, and the attachment is actuated in exactly the same manner in the modified forms as in the form shown in Figures 5 and 6.
It is also readily ap arent that the attachments may be provided with pocket engaging clips 59 as shown in Figures 1 to 6 of the drawings, or with loops or eyes 60 as shown in Figures 8 and 10 of the drawings. The loop 60 can be conveniently used for permitting the pencil to be suspended by a chain when so desired. If so desired both clip and loop may be provided on the same attachment, or the attachment may be left entirely plain without any clip or loop.
- In Figures 10 and ll are shownmeans for respectively connectin the attachments C and D to ordinary pencils E and F. In Figure 10,, the attachment 0 is provided with an inwardly extending sleeve 70, which is provided with an inwardly extending key hole slot 71, which adds resiliency to the sleeve and thus permits the same to be readily attached to pencil ends and to conform to the various diameters of diflerent pencils. The sleeve is provided with a sliding ring 72, which is adapted to contract the inner end of the sleeve inorder to bring the same into firm en agement with the pencil. This ring 72 may e provided with suitable tits 73 for engaging in recesses 74 formed in the pencil end and hold the attach- From the foregoing description, it can I be seen that an improved erase-r attachment has been provided which can be conveniently connected to the ordinary types of pencils, or to special types of pencils which embody independent leads, which are adapted to be fed outwardly of the pencil at the will of the operator, the improved attachment em bodying novel means for permitting aneraser to be fed exteriorl of the same, so that all of the eraser can he conveniently used and thereby prevent waste and the like.
7 Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of this invention; but,
I claim:
1. A pencil attachment "comprising a sleeve provided with threads, a follower threaded in said sleeve, means for detachably connecting the sleeve to a pencil, an eraser movably mounted within said sleeve and a rotatable cap carried by said sleeve, and means operatively connecting said cap to said follower so that said follower will be rotated with said cap u on movement thereof and moved along sai sleeve, whereby the eraser body will be fed outwardly of the cap.
2. In an eraser attachment for encils the combination with a pencil inclu in a barrel having an exteriorly threaded and, a sleeve interior] threaded with respect to the barrel, a follower arranged in the sleeve provided with threads for engaging the threads in the sleeve, a rotatable cap carried by the outer end of the sleeve having a bore of relatively large diameter, an eraser bod fitted within the bore, inwardly exten ing rods carried by the cap, the follower being slidably mounted upon said rod for movement longitudinally of the same, whereby upon rotation of the ca the follower will be forced outwardly an the eraser body therewith. An, eraser attachment comprising a sleeve, a. cap rotatably carried by the outer end of the sleeve having a bore of relatively large diameter, inwardly extending projections formed in the bore of the cap, an eraser body fitted within the bore of the cap provided with spiral ways arranged to receive said projection, a follower rotatably and slidably mounted within the sleeve and threadably connected thereto, and means operatively connecting said follower with said cap. 4. An eraser attachment for pencils comprisin a sleeve including an interiorly threa ed body for enga 'ng the threaded end of the pencil, a cap avlng a relatively large bore rotatably carried by the sleeve inwardly extending. rods carried b sai cap, a follower including a centra body and outwardly extending arms slidabliy mounted upon said rods and in screw threa ed en agement' with said sleeve, heads forme on the inner ends of said rods for limiting the inward movement of the follower thereon, inwardly extending pro'ectionsformed in tlie bore of the cap, an an eraser body fitted within the bore and receiving said projections.

An eraser attachment for pencils comprisin an internally threaded sleeve, a cap rotata 1y carried by the outer end of the sleeve having inwardly extending threaded sockets formed in the inner face thereof inwardly. extending rods threaded into said sockets, a follower including a central-body and. radially extending arms, the outer faces of the arms being threaded for engagmg 1n the threaded portions. of saidv sleeve the arms having openings forslidably receivin the rods,-heads formed on the inner end. 0 said rods for limiting the inward movement ofv the follower on the rod, the inner end described the combination of a sup of the said follower body having a conical extension formed thereon, an eraser body fitted within said bore in the cap having movement with respect thereto.

Inan eraser attachment of the class ortin cap provided with an opening theret rougli and with projections extending into said opening, and an eraser having spiral grooves provided therein from its lower end and extending for a portion of the length thereof, said spiral grooves adapted to receive therein the projections of said cap with the eraser disposed in the opening of said cap in order to support the eraser in a desired fixed relation with respect to the cap.
