H. J. GRIMM COMBINED STEP AND EXTENSION LADDER Filed March 26, 1925 3 Sheets-Sheet 5 JE a- I-LiEfim placement or removal of the channel members from the upper ends of the side bars.
The channel members 8 and 9 respectively are adapted to receive and support therein the side bars 13 and 14 respectively of the extension section 15 which is provided with the usual spaced rungs 16 between the side bars in the well known manner. It will be noted that the side bars 13 and 14 of the extension section 15 are adapted to slide in the channel members 8 and 9 for the purpose of holding the extension section in the desired position. The channel shaped members 8 and 9 are provided with set screws 17 for, engagement with the edges of the side bars 13 and 14 whereby the extension section 15 is held in its adjusted position.
The lateral extension 10 of each of the channel members 8 and 9 is provided with a pivoted spring catch 18 and the spring catch is pivotally mounted on the bolt 11 and is held thereon by the fastening nut 12. The spring catch 18 has its free end extending beyond the side edgeof the lateral extension 10 and is provided with a projection 19 extending through a suitable aperture 20 formed upon the spring catches 18 are lateral extension 10. The projections 19 flo rmed upon the spring catches 18 are adapted to register with. and fit into the apertures 6 and 7 formed in the plates 4 and 5 for the purpose of holding the channel members 8 and 9 in various adjusted positions as will hereinafter be more fully described. The purpose of having the free end 21 of the spring catch 18 extend beyond the edge of the channel members is to provide a suitable handle whereby the projection 19 may be disengaged from the various apertures for the purpose of swinging the chan nel members upon the upper ends of the side bars 2 and 3 whenever it is desired.
1 It will be seen from the drawings in Fig. 1 wherein a side elevation is shown that the extension section 15 in this position acts in the capacity of supporting legs for the step section 1 and the inclination of the step section 1 may be adjusted by releasing the set screws 17 from engagement with the side bars 13 and 14 of the extension section whereby the same may be slid in the channel members 8 and 9 so as to either raise or lower the step section 1. It will be further noted that the spring catch and the projection carried thereby will fit in one of the apertures formed in each of the plates 4 and 5 for holding the step section 1 and extension section 15 in the adjusted position and thereby prevent the accidental movement ofreither of the step section 1 or the extension section 15 when in use.
WVhen it is desired to use the extension section 15 for the purpose of placing the same against a building as is customary with a .ladder of great length I accomplish this feature by swinging the extension section 15 and the channel members 8 and 9 upon the pivot bolt 11 in such a manner that the bottom beveled edges or legs of the extension section 15 rest upon the top step of the section 1 and when in this position as more clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the extension section will be in the same plane with the step section 1 and after the extension section 15 has been swung into its proper posltion upon the upper end of the step section 1 it will be seen that the legs of the extension section 15 are supported within the channel members 8 and 9 and are held in this position by the set screws 17. The spring catch 18 and the projection 19 carried thereby will further aid in sup porting the extension section in its proper adjusted position upon the step section 1 as heretofore described.
As shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings wherein the step section 1 and the extension section 15 are used for the purpose of supporting a board 22 which is used by paperhangers'or the like, the extension section 15 is adjusted in the channel members 8 and 9 by the above described means arranged in the position as shown in the drawings in Figs. 5 and 6 and when in this position the auxiliary legs 23 and 24 which are pivotally mounted at their upper ends to the sides of the side bars 2 and 3' will be caused to swing outwardly from the side bars so that their bottom ends rest upon the ground in the manner as shown and for the purpose of preventing the step section 1 and extension section 15 from collapsing I provide the stop members 25 uponthe side bars 2 and 3 adjacent the upper ends of the auxiliary legs 23 and 24. In this manner the auxiliary legs 23 and 24 are limited in their movement in one direction and thereby will prevent the accidental collapsing of the ladder. It is to be further understood that the board 22 is held between the side bars 13 and 14 of the extension section in the manner as shown more clearly in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings It will thus be seen from the foregoing description that a combined step and extension ladder has been provided wherein a laddermay be extended for use as a scaling ladder and may also be adjusted for uses for various other purposes. It is to be further noted from the above description that a construction of the character described a ladder may be easily and quickly collapsed whereby the same may be more readily and easily handled and does not require the use of a number of tools for the purpose of setting up the ladder for use and the simplicity of the device further renders the same very efiicient and useful in its operation.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved apparatus, it
will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of the invention, and While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of ladder sections, plates carried by the upper ends of the side bars of one of the sections, channel shaped members formed with longitudinally extending lateral extensions having pivotal connection with the plates, the other section being slidably received in the channel shaped members, resilient latch elements pivoted to the longitudinally extending lateral extensions and cooperating with said plates in holding the last-mentioned ladder section in adjusted position.
2. In a device of the character described, a pair of ladder members, one of which is provided with a plate at the upper end of each side bar thereof channel members each provided with a lateral extension for pivotally mounting said channel members on said plates, said plates provided with spaced apertures, said channel members adapted to receive the side bars of the other ladder, means for holding the latter in said channel members, and a pivoted catch carried by said lateral extension and provided With a projection for engagement with the apertures formed in said plate for adjustably holding the channel members and said second mentioned ladder on the upper end of the first mentioned ladder.
In testimony whereof I atfix my signature.
I HENRY J. GRIMM.
