ALBERT H. DAVIS, or WARREN, OHIO, AssIGnon TO' n. w. PRICE, or WARREN, OHIO.
METALLIC TIE AND RAIL FASTENERQ Application fildOctober 5, 1923. Serial No, 666,728.
T 0 all whom. z't mag concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT H. DAVIS. a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Warren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties and Rail Fasteners, of which the 'following is a specification.
This invention relates to metallic ties and rail fasteners, and the invention has for its primary object to provide a tie for supporting rails which will form a firm foundation or roadbed for a track.
Another object of this invention is' the provision of novel means of constructing a metallic tie and rail fastener by using sheet steel and pressing the same into the form desired.
A still further object is to provide a tie having an inverted U-shape body portion in order that the same may be imbedded firmly in gravel, concrete or other suitable binding material in order to support the tie.
With the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to behereinai'ter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended'claim.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the severalviews, in which: t
Figure. 1 is a perspective view of my inventionshowing manner of connecting and securing'rails to a tie. I
Figure 2 is a perspective view of my invention showing a tie with a rail secured thereto and rails fastened together and 'se-- cured to said tie. a a Figure is a cross section of Figure 2 taken on line 22. 1 1 1 T oputthe invention into practice, I have provided an inverted U-shape tie member 1.
This tie member 1 is formed of sheet metal, or the like, and also provided with an opening 2 for the reception of a base portion 3 of arail 41-.
By referring to Figure 1 it will be seen that I have provided a recess 5 into which is placed an outer flange 6 of the base portion 3 of the rail 4." It win be seen that this PATENT ole/r ce. v
recess 5' is formed with a flange 7 forming the upper portionof the recess 5, which fits "over the upper surface of the outer flange 6. After the rail 41 has been placed so that the outer flange 6 fits snugly within the recess 5, and comes. in contact with the flange T, a
tapering dove-tail shaped'wedge 8 isdriven into tapering dove-tail grooves 9 and 10.
-This taperin dove-tail shaped wedge 8 is provided with an inturned flange 11 which comes in contact with the upper surface of the inner flange 12 ofthe rail 4, thereby securing the rail 4 tothe tie member 1.
it By referring to- Figure 2 it will be seen that I have provided means for fastening securely the ends 13 and 1 1 of rails 15 and 16. This is done by providing an upturned fish bar or plate 17 formed out of the material taken from the opening 2. 1 This fish bar or plate 17 is provided with a bond housing 18, which is more clearly shown in Figure 3. The outer flanges 19 and 2001 the rails 15 and 16 are secured within a recess 21 formed at'the base of the fish bar or plate,
17 This fish bar or plate 17 is also provided with a tongue 22 which is bent inwardly into a recess 23 formed in the neck 24 of the rail 16. The object of this tongue 22 is to keep the ends 13 and 14: of the rails 15 and 16 in a desired relation to each other.
The rails 15 and 16 are held in close contact with the fish bar or plate 17 by means "It is obvious that such changes in the size,
proportion and minor details ofconstruction as are permissible by the appended claim, may be resortedto without departing from the spirit and scope of the inven-v tion.
What I claim is:
In a device of the class described, a pressed. metallic body portion, a fish bar or plate formed by an upturned portion formed by'turning up a portion of the top of said pressed metallic body portion, atongue formed on said fish plate or bar for the substantially as described for the purpose purpose of funetloning wlth a recess formed set forth.
in a neck of a rail, a tapering dove-tail In testimonywhereofI affix mysignabure. shaped Wedge, 2m intm-ned and upturned ALBERT H. DAVIS. portion formed on said Wedge for the pur- Witnesses:
pose of forming a close Contact with an in- C. A. HARPMAN,
ne-r flange of a rail and the neck of said rail, E. C. GLAsNER.
