Application filed July 23,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JEAN Rt'm, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Solothurn, Switzerland, and CARL KnRsoH- BAUM, a citizen of the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Hinwil, Ct. Zurich, Switzerland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dentures; and we do hereby declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawingsyand to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a The present invention relates to improvements in dentures and has for its object to provide in an artificial denture or a set of artificial teeth a resilient or elastic packing at the necessary places between the set of teeth and its support, i. e. the roof of the mouth or the jaw respectively. This packing is an improvement over the known suction discs hitherto used for holding dentures in position.
Several constructional examples of the subject matter of the present invention are shown. In the drawing Fig. 1 shows in section and on an enlarged scale part of the denture, for instance the part of an upper set resting against the palate.
Fig. 2 is a section of a denture similar to that shown in Fig. 1, a diflerent packing strip being, however, provided.
F igs. 8, 4 and 5 are perspective views of dentures provided with a packing according to the present invention.
Referring now to the constructional example illustrated in Fig. 1, in the plate body a. of the set a groove 2) is provided in which an insertion 0 consisting of an elastic material, such as india-rubber, is lodged. The portion of the insertion which is remote of the plate bears snugly againstthe support cl (palate or jaw) and forms a packing between the plate and the support which permits air or liquid to pass from left to right when looking at the drawing, but prevents a passage in the opposite direction.
By means of this insertion portions of the denture of any shape can be outlined and packed or tightened. The insertion is preferably formed as a strip. In most cases such a strip will be arranged along the circum- 1923. Serial No. 653,318.
plate or denture itself is thesuction surface closely fitting the mucous membrance, and the packing strip surrounds the effective portion of the surface of. the plate. causing the adhesion of the plate to the mucous mem- I brane. The strip itself is not primarilythe means for causing the adhesion, the close fit of the plate does this, thestrip merely acts as a packing. This opposing force will be large owing to the comparatively large surface on which the pressure acts. If no outer force tending to cause a displacement is present and if the packing strip fits .well to its support the pressure below atmospheric disappears, it is no longer felt by the bearer of the set of artificial teeth and does not give rise to irritations of the mucous membranes;
The recess 6 is. arranged on the plate of the set according to requirements,-for instance two recesses or grooves may be provided beside each other sothat two packing or tightening strips 0 a, can be arranged to ensure a greater reliability, as is illustrated in Fig. 4, or two or more portions that are independent of each other and enclosed by packing strips can be formed. This ar-p rangement is shown in Fig. 5, in which three such portions 6, and g are enclosed by the packing strips 0 0 and 0 respectively. It is, however, essential that the extent of the groove corresponds to the requirements in I each case and that the tightened zone can be suitably shaped to lie snugly oirthe palate or the jaw.
In case of the generally used dentures of vulcanized india-rubber or vulcanite the groove can be obtained by inserting previous to the vulcanizing action an easily flexible metal strip it in the places where the groove has to be formed. The metal strip h (Fig. 2) is of a rectangular'cross section enclosing a T-shaped groove 5. Into the latter the beaded portion 7a of an india-rubber strip 0 is inserted, whereby the latter is held in position. The outer surface of the metal strip is preferably roughened as indicated in Fig. 2 by dotted lines, to ensure that the strip is firmly embedded in the vulcanite mass. The. T-shaped groove of the strip may be filled with a material that can be'removed by dipgroove 2.
