Be it known that I, GEORGE J. HAGAN, residing at Perrysville, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a citizen of the United States, have invented or dis covered certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces, of which'improvements the following is a specification.
The invention described herein relates to certain improvements in furnaces for heating bars for sheets and also sheets formed from the bars, and has for its object a construction of furnace combining both a pair heating chamber, a sheet heating and a combustion chamber, said parts being so combined that the products of combustion will flow along the pair heating chamber from the discharging end, and after properly heating the bar, are employed for heating the sheets progressively towards the discharge end of the sheet heating chamber. It is a further object of the invention to employ auxiliary means for heating thesheets,
-when necessary, in which case a combustion chamber is so arranged that the products of combustion from the pairheating cha mberwill flow through such auxiliary combustion chamber and commingling with the products I of combustion generated thereinflow into' and through the sheet heating chamber The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed. 1 r

While fuel, either ina solid, liquid, 'or gaseous state may-be supplied to the combustion'chamber, it ispreferred to employ a fluid fuel which is introduced; into said chamber through an opening 8 as shownin Fig. '1. x The products'of combustion flow along the chamber lheating the bars and escape from said pair heating chamber'o'ver a bridge wall 9 or into flues '10 which branch from a main flue 11 under the hearthof the chamber 1. This main flue connects with the lower end of the vertical flue 12 which is connected by a horizontal flue 13 to the stack, the flow of products of combustion to. thelatter being controlled by a suitable valveor damper 14 preferably arranged in the flue 13as'shown in Fig. 2. The products of combustion flowing over the bridge wall I 9 are employed for heating the sheets inthe chamber 2. It may at times happen that the products of combustion flowing over the bridge wall, may not contain suflicient thermal units to properly heat the sheets in chamber 2, and hence it is preferred to employ an auxiliary heating chamber; 15 throughfwhich the products of combustion 1 from-the pair heating chamber will pass and in passingthroughsuchcombustion chamber will commingle with highly heated products of combustion generated in such auxiliary chamber, by the combustion of a suitable of combustion flow from the auxiliary chamber 15 over a bridge wall 17 along the sheet heating chamber 2 towards the charging and -dischargingends thereof, to ports 18 which The proportion of products'of combustion I flowing from the pair heating chamber over the bridge wall will be principally deteg ans mined by the damper 1a in the flue 13, a1 though such flow Will also be largely influenced by the damper 22 which controls the rate of flow oi products of combustion from the chamber 2.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. A furnace having in combination a bar heating chamber having openings for'charging and discharging, means for moving bars from the charging to the discharging openthe said bar heating chamber for heating said chamber, a sheet heating chamber having a charging and discharging openingand so communicating With the bar heating chamber that products of combustion will flow from the latter into the sheet heating chamber, and a stack communicating with the sheet heating chamber at a point adjacent to the charging and discharging opening of such chamber. A furnace hav 1 z, unat-ion a bar heating chamber ha ving openings at its opposits ends, means for moving bars through such chamber, a combustion chamber adjacent to the discharge end of the bar heating chamber, a fluechaving a regulating valve for the escape of products of combus 'tion connected to the bar heating chamber adjacent to its charging end, a sheetheating chamber having a charging and discharging opening andso communicating With the bar heating chamber that products of combustion Will flow from the latter into the sheet heating chamber, and a flue provided with a regulating valve connected to the sheet heating chamber at a point adjacent to its charging and discharging opening and connected to a stack.
3. A furnace having in combination a bar heating chamber having openings at its opp'ositeends, means for moving bars through such chamber, a combustion chamber adjacent to the discharge end of the bar heating chamber, a flue having a regulating valve for the escape of products of combustion, connected to the bar heating chamber adjacent to its charging end, an auxiliary combustion chamber connected to the bar heating chamber, a sheet heating chamber having a charging and discharging open-ing and so c-ommunlcating With the combustion chamber that products of combustion will flow from the latter into the sheet heating chamber, and aflue provldcd with a regulating valve connected to the sheet heating chamber at a point adjacent to its charging and discharging openings.
