Description

Patented Mar, 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES "PATENT ICE *GEORGE OLAUSING, onronTsMooT, OHIO, AssIGNoa To THE VULOAN LAST OOM- PANY,foF PORTSMOUTH, OHIO, A CORPORATION or OHIO. y
LAST.
Appncation med April 2s, 1924. seriaifNo. 709,475;
- T o all whom t may concern.:
-citizen' ofthe United States, residing at Portsmouth,y in the county of Scioto andv State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lasts, `of which the following is av specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to lasts, and in particular to collapsible lasts.
It is the object of my invention to provide a collapsible last' in which the halves of the last rock upon one .another about a common center.
It is a further Object to provide yielding means to resist this movement from one position to the other. It is a further object to provide a connecting means' the points of connection of which on each last half will be below the pivotal center'of the last halves when the last is expanded and above said ycenter when the last is collapsed.4 K It is a further object of my invention to provide an articulated connecting link'betweenthev last halves which willpermit of the 'movement of-said last halves Vabout one 4 another although thepoints i of connection points of connection will tend to vary as the of .thelink parts to the respective last halves are .xed and the distance between said t away portion 2 for receiving a portion of i' lticallowerportion 5 whicha corresponds to ajsimilar portion Gon, thev frontofV the lower;
the iconnecting-m`echanism- A l The front half of the lastisnprovided with avertical rear face or substantially vertical vface 3, the lower portion of which is cuty ,away in a semicircular concavity 4. lThis rear face terminates 1n the substantially very part ofthe rearorflheelportion ofthe-flast,
7. This front -face l ofthe heel fpart l of. the
-last isprovided with a semicircula'r projection or shoulder l8 which-describes .an arc somethingfgreater than 180 -degreesw The upperpart of the front face lof the heel-part of the last is extended upwardly and rearwardly as at 9 so that the space betweenlthe faces 3 and 9 permits `thevlast-halves to collapse while thefaces 5 and 6 limitktheir movement in their expanded position. f The knuckle joint composed ofthe shoulder 8 and concave depression 4 provides a suitable ball and socket type of joint forvthe pivoting of the last parts substantially about the center 10. The rear half of this last is also cut away as at 11 to receive some ofthe connecting parts. The front part of the ,last is provided with a transverse piny 12fand the rear or heel part of the last provided with a transverse pin 13.
l A semicircular link segment 14 is 4pivoted near one end-on the pin 12. It is piv'otally connected at its other lend on 'the pin15 to the ends ofA connecting plates 16 and 17. The `free end of this link segment is. composed of an upper, substantially vertical portion- 18and a cutawayportion. 18, so that this --end can rockupon a similarly formed end of a companion, oppositely disposed, link segment 19, which is V.connected at 2O to` the other ends of the connecting plates 16 and 17. The .segmentallink 19 is pivotally mounted on. the .pin .13.. V The Ilower ends of the llinks 14and. 19 are. provided withdownwardly extending, oppof sitely disposed hooks; The hook on the link 14 is designated 21 and the hook on the link 19 isl designated 22.N Mountedong these hooks and connecting them isa .coilfspring `23 which-serves toresist the rocking of the Ilink segments on the pins 12 and 13.
the spring with the linksegmentsis always below the pivotal center 10 and is below the points of connection ormounting ofthe Ilink segments on the respectivepinsvj12and 13. It will-be noted that theflast, which isfp'ref-V erably made of wood, is somewhat compressible, vwhich isa matter Iof advantagefdue to the fact that the distance between the centers of the pins 12 and 13 lwillincrease `and decrease as the parts are moved from collapsed to. expanded Aposition or viceversa. The Spring' .23mw11eresistthsi-irirementbecause the link segments,fwill-:roelsgnfthe spins 12 and 13 and the ends of these link segments will rock upon one another during this movement from one position to the other of the last halves. y
It will be understood that I desire to comprehend within my invention such modiiications as may be necessary to adapt my invention to varying conditions of use.
I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a last, a toe part and a heel part adapted to rock about on one another, segmental links mounted in either part, adapted to have their tree ends rock on one another, and yielding means connecting their other ends, whereby when the last partsare moved from one position to another, such movement will be yieldingly resisted and said segments will rock on one another.
2. In a last, a heel'part and a toe part adapted to rock upon one another, an articulated link connecting said parts, means to pivotally mount the ends lof said link on the respective parts and yielding means ccnnected with said linkto resist the movement of the parts from one position to the other.
3. In a last, a heel part and a toe part adapted to rock upon one ano-ther, an articulated link connecting said parts, means to pivotally mount the ends of said link onk the respective parts and yielding means connected with said link to resist the movement of the parts from'one position to the other, the points of connection of the link to the last parts being below vthe point about which the parts pivot when the last is expanded and above such point when the last is col'- lapsed.
4. In a last, a heel part and a toe part, a shoulder on one part having a semicircular surface fitting into a semicircular depression on the other p art and said last parts being cut away so as to permit their collapsing yand so ,as to limit their expansion,
and an articulated link connecting said parts arrangedctor the parts of the link to rock upon one another as ythe parts of the Y lastv pass from one position to the other.
5. In a last, a heel part and a toe part, a shoulder on one'part having a semicircular surface fitting into a semicircular depres sion on the other part and said last parts being cutaway so as t0 permit their collapsing and so as to limit their expansion, an articulated link connecting said parts arranged for the parts of thev link to rockv upon one another as the parts ot the last pass from one position to theV other, and
yielding means connected lto the tree ends of said link to resist this movement of the last parts.
6. In a last, a heel part and a toe part, a shoulder on one part having a semicircular surface fitting into a semicircular depression on the other part and said last parts being cut away so as to permit their collapsing and so as to limit their expansion, an articulated link connecting said parts arranged tor the parts of the link to rock upon one another as the parts of the last pass trom one position to the other, and yielding means connected to the free ends of said link to resist this movement ot the last parts, the points of connection of the link on the last parts and the yielding means being located below such points ot connection. I
7. In a last, last halves comprising a toe part and a lheel part adapted to rock upon one another about a common center, an articulated link joining said last halves, said link being mounted Von transverse pins mounted in the respectiveV halvesot sai-d last, and a spring connected to hooks carried on the tree ends of said link below the points of connection ot the link to the last halves, said points of connection being arranged so'that the movement takes place.
8. In a last, last halves comprising a toe part and a heel part adapted torock upon one another about a common center, an articulated link joining said last halves, said link beingy mounted on transverse Vpins mounted in the respective halves ot said last, and a spring connected to hooks car*- ried on the free ends of said link below the points of connection ot the link to the last hal-ves, said points of connection being arranged so that a line drawn therebetween will pass over the pivotal center aboutwhich ,n the lasthalves move when the last halves are moved from one position to the other, the distance between said centers of connection varying vas'the movement takes place, said last halves being composed of compressibl'e material to accommodate the passing ot the last halves so connected from y.one position to the other.
