SICKLE-BAR ATTACHMENT.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Ennnsr Knrrnnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Modesto, county of Stanislaus, State of California, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Sickle-Bar Atttachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.

This invention relates to improvements in sickle-bar construction as used in mowing ma chines, the principal objects of my invention being to mount the reciprocating knifebar onto the finger bar in such a manner that there are no obstructions above the knife to catch dirt or the like; the knife runs with very little friction and much easier than the present used devices; and no wearing contact is had with the finger bar and hence the usual wearing plates on the cutter bar are done away with.

A further object is to mount the knife guards on the finger bar in such a manner that the guards are firmly held from dis placement without depending on a snug fit of the holding bolts, and eliminating any possibility of the guards binding on the knife bar.

A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.

These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.

In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views:

Fig. 1 is a top plan view of my improved device, partly broken out.

Fig. 2 is a view at the shoe end of the same.

Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 denotes the finger bar, a rigid horizontal member, having at one end the usual form of shoe 1 This bar is provided along its forward vertical edge with a longitudinal groove 2, and along its under face adjacent its rear edge with a groove 3.

A channel shaped member 4:, forming the knife-bar fits over that edge of the'finger. bar having the groove 2 therein, the latter having a plurality of longitudinally spaced rollers 5 pivoted therein, which project somewhat beyond the adjacent edgeof the finger bar and bear against the inner vertical face of the channel knife-bar. Mounted on the upper face of the bar 4 are the knives 6 of usual character, said bar having at its end opposite to the shoe l the usual ball pitman connection member 7 By reason of this construction, the knife member is prevented from vertical movement relative to the finger bar by the upper and lower flanges of the channel 4, which enable the usual wearing plates above the knife bar being done away with.

Direct rubbing contact of the knife bar against the finger bar in a horizontal plane is prevented by the rollers 5, which take all the wear and make a smooth and easy runnine, structure.

Eliminating the wearing plates eliminates projections on the upper surface of the cutter bar, and hence there is nothing to catch dirt etc. thereon. By reason of the special shape of the knife bar, the finger-bar groove and rollers therein are protected at all times from clogging up with dirt, or being damaged in any way.

Projecting forwardly of the finger bar from under the same are the usual guard members 8 having the ledger plate or fixed cutters 9 to cooperate with the knives 6, and the guard portion 10 overhanging the knives, as is customary, the ledger plates clearing the forward edge of the finger bar so as to allow the channel 4 to pass freely therebetween.

These members are all independent units, each being secured in place on the finger bar by a rivet 11.

To locate the guards in place on the finger bar transversely of the same and hold them from movement independently of the rivets, each has a ridge or lug 12 along its rear and upper edge which fits in the finger bar groove 3.

To protect the knife bar from being struck from ahead by any obstructions passing between the guards, the latter are formed with laterally projecting extension guards 13 close to but spaced from the forward edge of the knife bar, the members 13 on all the guards terminating close to each the invention as set forth herein.

While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction Of'the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to asdo not form a departure from the spirit of the invention, as defined by the appended claim. .j .7 v v.
