Be it k o t a 1, W LL AM .HArWQQ Mo rnnsiinnn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and ,useful Improvements in Vent1laity of the wind.
And a still further object is to devise means for supporting the revolub'le portion of the ventilator on the flue pipe in order that there will be no danger of the. former getting out of working order due-to weather conditions. V V r My nvention consists of a ventilator constructed and arranged all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 represents a vertical section of a fine pipe showing in part section my ventilator applied thereto.

S is a hollow truncated cone inserted into the casing portion 6, the larger end of the cone being exposed and such cone being socured interinediately of its length tothe casing portion 6. The cone 8 is provided with an annular flared flange :9 at its larger or exposed end.

The tail-vane is provided with the horizontal slots 14 for permitting the extension of the entendible casing portion The pointed end 4- of the spindle is seated on a conical seat constituted in a plate of hard material, such as glass,1 .ecured to the underneath side of the cone interinediately of the length thereof. 16 is a nut threaded on the upper end of the spindle 3 and adapted to limit the vertical movement of the casing 5 with respect to the flue pipe 1, the lower end of said vertical casing portion 5 having ball bearings inserted between its inner face and the outer face of the upper end of the flue pipe 1.

The vertically disposed plate 19 is adjustably inounted on the arms 17 by such arms being inserted into the socket members 20 on the rear face of the plate 19 and held in place by the set screws 21. 22 is a damper mounted on the damper rod 18 and adapted to control the admission of the air into the cone.
23 are longitudinally eritending rods on each side of the cone secured thereto at their forward ends and extending through the" outwardly projecting lugs 24 and 25 on the casing portion 6. 26 are longitudinally extending rods secured to the sides of the extendible casing portion 10 at their rear ends and extending freely through the lugs 25 immediately below the corresponding rods 28, the forward ends of the rods 26 being provided with upwardly extending plates 27 through which the rods 23 freely extend. 28 are springs mounted on the rods 23 and 26 between the plates 27 and the lugs 25.
29 are connecting rods pivotally connected at their upper ends to the rods 26 and at their lower ends to the depending rods 17 intermediately of the length of the latter.
30 is an annular packing inserted between the inner surface of the extendible casing portion 10 and the horizontal casing portion 6 and held in place by the annular ring 31. of U-shaped cross section secured to the said casing portion 6, for preventing rain, snow and sleet getting in between the extendible portion 10 and the horizontal portion of the T-shaped casing.
The operation of my invention is as follows:
The vane 13 will swing the ventilator into the wind wherein air is admitted through the cone 8. As such cone tapers from the inlet end to its outlet, the wind on entering it will gradually decrease in velocity as it travels towards the smaller end of the cone, whereby the density of the air is increased.
The air on being ejected from the smaller end of the cone immediately expands in the expansion chamber constituted in the interior of the casing portion 6, consequently increasing in velocity and in so doing creating an up draught in the flue pipe due to suction.

apparent that the air passing through the cone at great velocity will be ejected at such an angle as to miss the edge of the casing portion 6. When this occurs the suction in the flue pipe is lost, and consequently I provide the extendible portion which operates automatically and proportionately to the velocity of the wind.
hen there is a gentle breeze blowing the velocity of the wind will not be sufiicient to have any appreciable effect on the plate 19 but when the wind increases the wind impinging on it forces it rearwardly as inclicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. Then this occurs the connecting rods 29 are forced rearwardly and with them the extendible easing portion 10. The extending of the portion 10 lengthens the expansion chamber and thus permits the air ejected from the cone to impinge 011 the interior of the extendible portion prior to passing out of the ventilator.
It is to be noted that the extending of the portion 10 to increase the expansion chamber is proportionate to the wind being directly actuated thereby. The springs are provided for the purpose of restoring the extendible portion 10 to its closed position when the wind drops. When the portion 10 is extended it will be seen that the springs 28 are compressed owing to the plates 27 which engage the forward ends of the springs moving towards the lugs 25.
The damper 22 operates in unison with the extendible casing portion 10. As the wind increases in velocity the moving rearwardly of the plane 19 under its influence turns the damper as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, thus keeping the volume of air admitted through the cone member constant irrespective of the velocity of the wind.
In mounting my ventilator on the spindle 3 it will be seen that the friction is reduced to a minimum and that the ventilator will require little, if any, care or attention for a very long period.
Further, owing to the saddle back portion 12 extending over the cone casing portion 6 and extendible casing portion 10, the working parts, such as the rods 23, 26 and 29 are protected from the weather, particularly sleet and ice, that would otherwise have a tendency to interfere with the perfect working of the device.
In addition, the nut 16 prevents the seat 15 riding oif the pointed end 4 of the spindle in case an upward current of air strikes the ventilator.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have devised a simple and etiective revoluble ventilator which in addition to being used as a ventilator can be used as a cowl on chimneys for creating an up draught therein.
If desired the plate 19 may be divided and situated on each side of the vertical casing portion 5, instead of being mounted in the vicinity of the inlet end of the cone as above described.
lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. The combination with a fine pipe, of a cowl casing applied to the top thereof, said casing having a horizontally extending portion, a hollow truncated cone member having its smaller end inserted into the end of the horizontal portion of the casing whereby an expansion chamber is constituted between the smaller end of the cone and the outlet of the horizontal portion of the casing, damping means in the inlet end of the cone member, and means for varying the length of the expansion chamber commensurately to the velocity of the wind, both means operating automatically in unison.
2. The combination with a flue pipe, a cowl casing applied to the top thereof, said casing having a horizontally extending portion, a hollow truncated cone member having its smaller end inserted into one end of the horizontal portion of the casing whereby an expansion chamber is constituted between the smaller end'of the cone and the outlet of the horizontal portion of the casing, a slidably extendible casing portion surrounding the outlet end of the horizontal casing portion.
3. The combination with a flue pipe, of a T-shaped casing, the vertical portion of the casing rotatably mounted on the flue pipe, a hollow truncated cone member having its smaller end inserted into the end of the horizontal portion of the casing, an expansion chamber being constituted between the smaller end of the cone and the outlet of the horizontal portion of the casing, and means for automatically increasing the length of the expansion chamber upon the velocity of the wind increasing. 4. The combination with a fine pipe, of a T-shaped casing, the vertical portion of the casing rotatably mounted on the flue pipe, a hollow truncated cone member having its smaller end inserted into the end of the. horizontal portion of the casing, an expansion chamber being constituted between the smaller end of the cone and the outlet of the horizontal portion of the casing, damping means in the inlet end of the cone member, and means for increasing the length of the ex ansion chamber upon the velocity of the wind increasing, both means operating automatically in unison.
5. The combination with a flue pipe, of a T-shaped casing, the vertical portion of the casing rotatably mounted on the flue pipe, a hollow truncated cone member having its smaller end inserted into the end of the horizontal portion of the casing, an expansion chamber being constituted between the smaller end of the cone and the outlet of the horizontal portion of the casing, a slidable extendible casing portion surrounding the outlet end of the horizontal casing portion, and means for sliding the extendible portion longitudinally with respect to the horizontal casing portion.
6. The combination with a flue pipe, of a T-shaped casing, the vertical portion of the casing rotatably mounted on the flue pipe, a hollow truncated cone member having its smaller end inserted into the end of the horizontal portion of the casing, an expansion chamber being constituted between the smaller end of the cone and the outlet of the horizontal portion of the casing, a slidable ozztendible casing portion surrounding the outlet end of the horizontal casing portion, a vertical plate member swingably mounted on the ventilator and a connection between the plate member and the extendible casing portion whereby the latter is actuated upon the movement of the former.
7. The combination with a flue pipe, of a T-shaped casing, the vertical portion of the casing rotatably mounted on the flue pipe, a hollow truncated cone member having its smaller end inserted into the end of the horizontal portion of the casing, an expansion chamber being constituted between the smaller end of the cone and the outlet of the horizontal portion of the casing, a slidable extendible casing portion surrounding the outlet end of the horizontal casingportion, an adjustable vertical plate member swingably mounted on the ventilator and a con nection between the plate member and the extendible casing portion whereby the latter is actuated upon the movement of the former. a
8. The combination with a flue pipe, of a- T-shaped casing, the vertical portion of the casing rotatably mounted on the flue pipe, a hollow truncated cone member having its smaller end inserted into the end of the horizontal portion of the casing, an expansion chamber being constitutedbetween the smaller end of the cone and the outlet of the horizontal portion of the casing, a slidable extendible casing portion surrounding the outlet end of the horizontal casing portion, a damper shaft journalled in the inlet end of the cone, and its ends extending exteriorly thereof, a damper secured to the shaft, depending rods secured to the ends of the shaft, a plate member secured to the depending rods, and connecting rods pivotally connected to the depending rods and to the extendible casing portion.
9. The combination with a fine pipe, of a T-shaped casing, the vertical portion of the casing rotatably mounted on the flue pipe, a hollow truncated cone member having its smaller end inserted into the end of the horizontal portion of the casing, an expansion chamber being constituted between the smaller end of the cone and the outlet of the horizontal portion of the casing, a slidable extendible casing portion surrounding the outlet end of the horizontal casing portion, a damper shaft journalled in the inlet end of thecone, and its ends extending exteriorly thereof, a damper secured to the shaft, depending rods secured to the ends of the shaft, a plate member secured to the depending rods, and connecting rods pivotally connected to the depending rods and to the ext-endible casing portion, and resilient means for restoring the extendible casing portion and damper to their initial position.
