To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lows FRIEDMANN, citizen of the Republic of Austria, residing at Vienna, in the Republic of Austria, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to the Heating of Gil Delivered by Lubricating Pumps (for which I have filed applications for patents in Austria on April 10, 1920; in Poland on December 3, 1919; in Hungary on March 3, 1915; in Switzerland on March 1, 1915; in Germany on February 26, 1915; in Czechoslovakia on August 27, 1917, and in England on August 28, 1920), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mechanically driven lubricating pumps, especially adapted for the lubrication of the inner parts of locomotive-mechanisms. By such pumps ,the oil is ted to the different places, where it is to be consumed, so that the quantities of oil delivered by the lubricating pump are not returned in the oil container and therefore a circulation of oil can not occur.
The invention consists essentially in that the quantities of oil are heated by steam before they are entering into the lubricating pump.
For this purpose the oil container consists in two chambers of which one is considerably smaler and is arranged in the lower part of the oil container, being connected with the suction lead of the lubricating pump, while the other chamber is formed by the other much larger part of the oil container. a
The smaller chamber is heated by steam and the return of the oil from this chamber to the container is prevented.
Thereby two rooms filled with oil of different temperatures are formed. The smaller chamber contains oil of approximately constant temperature, whereas the oil contained in the other larger chamber i. e., in the oil container itself, will have a much lower temperatuie and will be heated very slowly and directly by the smaller chamber.
In known arrangements of this kind, in which the oil is heated in such pumps, the whole quantity of oil contained in the oil container is heated and therefore when the plant is first; started, the oil is too cold,
whereas after a certain period it becomes, too hot and this influences the workmg of the lubricating pump in a Very deteriorating manner.

Referring to the drawings, a is the oil container in which pumps 2) are arranged in a known manner. 0 indicates the suction duct and d an oil chamber connected by passages e, c with the oil container; f is a second chamber adjacent tothe chamber (Z and is connected with a steam lead 9. The cross-section of the passages e, e is so small that after starting the pump 6 the oil current set up from the container a through thin passages to the chamber 03 attains such a velocity that the tendency of the hot oil to return from the chamber d to the container is counteracted. If a very large area would be given to the passages e, e the result would be that simultaneously a flow of cool oil into the chamber 03 and a return of hot oil into the container would oc cur owing to the difference of temperature. By appropriately closing the passages e c it is of no consequence where these passages are locatedwhether at a higher or at a lower level. Preferably these passages are located below the top wall of the chamber 03.
In the modification shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings the steam chamber f, instead of being located below or adjacent the oil chamber, is located within the chamber d.
If the passages e and 6' were of large area or if they communicated with the upper portion of the chamber 03 the oil heated in the chamber (Z would be disposed to rise through the cooler oil and to escape at a rapid rate through said passages 'back into the oil container (1.
The pumps 6 take up the heated oil from the upper portion of the chamber d through the passages 0 and will thus counteract any tendency of the heated oil to flow back through the passages e and e to the oil con tainer a. To this end the passages e and e are preferably made of such area that the return. ofthe oil from the chamber d to the container a is prevented at the 1 efl?ective speed of the pumps d.
In the operation of the apparatus cool oil will pass from thecontainerwthrough the passages e and e' into, the chamber at and, in flowing' thro'ugh 'said cliamberfto the inlet passages Q; )f; bh e PuI1}PS, will-be heated to the required degree.
