J. STRZYCZKOWSKI LAMINATED WEAR RESISTING COMPOSITION Filed Sept. 29, 1923 INVENTOR ./UL /AA/ S TRHZYCZ/(owm ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAMINATED WEAR-RESISTING COMPOSITION.
Application filed September 29, 1923. Serial No. 665,549.'
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JULIAN S'rnzYozKow- SKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and 6 State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Laminated Vear-Resisting Compositions, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of this invention is 10 to provide a new and improved construction of a composition of matter especially adapted for such uses as fioorings, automobile tires and similar purposes where a material is required that will stand up under hard and continuous usage.
Another object is to provide a laminated construction of metallic and fibrous material which will form a compact, but semi-resilient structure, in which the metallic elements are constructed and arranged to act as a binder or connecting means for holding the fibrous elements joined together.
For the accomplishment of these and such further objects as will hereinafter be apparent to those skilled in the art to which this appertains, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying' drawings, wherein is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification y Fig. 1 is al plan view of a composition embodying my invention and Figs. 2 and 3 are sections on the lines 2 2 of Fig. 1 and 3-3 of Fig. 2 respectively.
As shown in the drawings, my improved composition consists of a plurality of comparatively thin sheets 10 of a suitable semiresilient substance such as fibre, wood, paper, pressed pulp, rubber, canvas or the like. Between t e sheets 10 a metallic structure 11 is arranged which isl preferably of open mesh configuration as shown in Fig. 2 of the' drawing. The strands 12 of the metallic mesh are preferably flat as shown and are formed into a diamond shape mesh, the flat faces of the strands being twisted to extend transversely of the sheets 10 be tween the pointed ends 13 and 14 of the diamonds. At the point of connection 15 of the diamond shape meshes, the strands also eX- tend transversely to the sheets 10. It will be noted that the diamond shaped meshes are arranged in staggered relation between the sheets 10 so that the central longitudinal diagonals of the meshes of one metallic structure are in alignment with the points of connection 15'of the adjacent structure. By staggering the meshes of the metallic structure in this manner, the ends of the metallicvs'trands which project to resist the wearing strains are distributed vmore thoroughly and the binding or holding effect of the strands is also more evenly distributed.
After the sheets 10 and metallic structure 1l are assembled they are subjected to pressure which causes the flat strands 12 to be pressed into the adjacent sheets, thus caus ing the strands to erform an effective binding function and t iereby hold the composition in a compact unitary mass.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A laminated wear resisting composition consisting of a plurality of thin sheets of semi-resilient material and an open meshed metallic structure interposed between said sheets, said metallic structure formed of a plurality of interconnected Hat strands, the fiat faces of which extend transversely of and are sunk into said sheets, to l bind said sheets4 and metallic structure into a compact unitary mass. v
2.. A laminated wear resisting composition consisting of a plurality of thin sheets of semi-resilient material and a plurality of an open diamond meshed metallic structures interposed between said sheets, the
meshes of adjacent members of said metallic structures being arranged `in staggered relation.
3. A laminated wear resisting composition consisting of a plurality of thin sheets of semi-resilient material and a plurality of metallic structures interposed between ture into a compact mass, and the meshes said" sheets, said metallic structures being of adjacent members of said metallic strucformed of a plurality of flat strands intertures being arranged in staggered relation. l. connected to form open diamond shaped VIn testimony whereof I have aixed my 5 meshes, the fiat faces of said strands, exsignature.
tending transversely to and being sunk into said sheets to bind said sheets and struc- JULIAN STRZYCZKOWSKI.
