UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARIUS O. O. CHURCH, OF PARKERSBURG, WEST VIRGINIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HEATING-STOVES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,828, dated July 7, 1874} application filled June 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known'that I, MARIUS O. O. CHURCH, of Parkersburg, in the county of Wood and State of I Vest Virginia, have invented a new and Improved Heating-Stove 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a front'view of stove, partly broken away; Fig. 2, a horizontal section; Fig. 3, a sectional elevation, and Fig. 4 a detail plan view.
The invention relates to and consists in means whereby a heating-stove may be made to economize fuel and supply heat by radiation, reflection, and convection in a more thorough and effectual manner than has been heretofore done. These means will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
A represents a grate, pivoted by its crossbar a in the eyes of upright standards B B. Under the rear of grate the hearth O is made with an open detachable section, 0, to allow the ashes to be discharged into the ash-pan I), that slides in suitable guides, cl cl. The fire-place back E is drawn in on the upward rise, upon a gradual curve toward the centrally-placed flue F, thus causing the heat to be reflected from the metallic surface and transmitted into the room. Behind the back E is placed an air-heating chamber, G, into which the air from room is admitted through the dampered bottom inlets g g g, and also atmospheric air through the pipe H and dampered inlet h. In this chamber G I arrange a vertical arc-plate, I, perforated and provided with horizontal apertured flanges i. The object of these is to receive and store up the heat, so that the air may gradually and uniformly absorb the same and convey it by convection into the room. K is a superposed chamber, that receives the air from chamber G, while its heat is derived mainly from the smoke-flue which it surrounds. flue I attach a series of metallic plates or strips, 7c, whose conductivity will enable them to readily take the heat from the walls of flue and disseminate it over their surfaces, where it may be conveniently utilized in heating the air. L is the perforated cover, through which the warmed air rises into the room. Thus it will be perceived that by the open grate I secure the ordinary radiation; by the curved metallic face of hearth-back I reflect into the room the heat that would otherwise be taken up the smoke-flue; and by means of the metallic plates in the air-heating chamber I store up the heat, like motion in the balance-wheel of a machine, and allow the passing air to receive a uniform and genial warmth. In this way I not only economize greatly the fuel and utilize a maximum of the heat, but cause a chamber or building to continually receive accessions of fresh air at a uniform temperature, thus preventing the colds, ca-
tarrhs, and various ailments arising from the MARIUS O. O. CHURCH.
