Application filed April 6, 1923. Serial No. 630,308.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. MORSE, a pitizenv of the United States, residing. at San Fernando, in the county of Los Angeles and .State of California, llElNG invented 'certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Structures for Beds, Couches, or the like,
- 'of which the following is a specification.
- The primary object of my present invention is to provide anew and improvedconstruction of-springs, more especiallyadapted for use in couches, beds and bed lounges and inlthe practical application of which the desired elasticity of the spring. is obtained at any and all portions of the bed alike; a spring that will render to a person of heavy weight, on one side of the bed, and r a person of light weight, at the other side of the bed, the same relative elasticity, with no sag in the center, and in which the form of construction of the sprmg greatly multiplies the efiectiveness and durability of such springs. 7 I 4 Another object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of spring, of the single strand type, thatis especially-well adapted for beingapplied, across the frame of the bed, couch, lounge, etc. and for being combined with the intermediate flexible supporting members placed at proper intervals, according tothe width of theframe ofthe bed or couch.

A still further object of this invention is 'to provide an improved construction ofsingle wire strand spring for couches, beds and the like having such shape that, when opf eratively applied, an edge spring is obtained in a true line and which provides ease and comfort should one desire to set .on the edge of the bed or couch; a spring construction in ;which the alignment is across the bed, also across the body resting on the bed and which assures perfect elasticity to the said resting body.
With the abovegeneral objects in view and other minor objects that will hereinafter be apparent, my invention embodies, in a spring of the general type stated, certain features of construction and peculiar arrangement of parts that will be fully explained in the following detailed description, specifically mentioned in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure I is a diagrammatic plan view of a preferred form of bed frame with asufiicient number of my improved springs to illustrate a practical application of my present invention.
Figure 2 is a cross sectionof the bed taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detailperspective view of one of the improved constructions of springs shown in Figures 1 and 2. p I V Figure 4 is'a perspective viewofa slightly modified form of spring device that is adapted to be used on. couches and which application to the framing, .per. se, since my present invention is wholly directed to the spring formation. g I p ,The spring elements are especially designed for being operatively applied to and lashed together on the bed framing in any desired manner,-a number of different modes 7 of lashings being indicated in Figure 1 and hereinafter referred to.-
In thedrawings I have shown my present construction of springs as especially designed for use in connection with a couch or bed and while but three transversely disposed spring devices are shown at one end and one spring at the other end of the frame it is to be understood that any desired number of springs of proper size and flexibility of wire are assembled such as will ensure a comfortable and durable bed.
lVhile a full size bed spring structure is outlined in Figure 1 of the drawings, it will also be understood that one-quarter, twothirds or couch sized bed springs may be equipped with the same type of spring device. by. reducing the number of supporting members of the spring in the construction thereof, see Figure 4t.
The bed frame, as. shown, includes six parallel spring carriers or rails designated 1, 2, 3, 4:, 5 and6 and they areheld in rigid relation by a number of transverse braces 7 and at the head and. foot ends the several rails. 16 are each fitted with or terminate in uprights 8 that constitute means at the head and foot, endsof theframe for anchoring the ends of: the flexible lashing means which extend the full length of the bed and are securely connected. at their. ends to the upright, 8 in any, approved manner.
The lashing meansior holding the springs against rattling and in the desired upright position maybe 01, any of the well known lashings commonly used in the art of making spring beds. Referring now to Figure 3. which illustrates one of the completed bed spring elements diagrammatically shown in Figures 1 and 2. it will be seen that the said spring element is bent toshape from a single wire strand, and when made of a sizeto. suit a,
full width bed, it includes a, number of top or parallel crown portions, and parallel bot-.
tom portions and a series of; uprights or supports of V-shaped form, the various crown portions, bottom portions and the V-shape'd supports being connected by coiled portions as shown.
In the form shown in. Figure 3 the wire strand, at the beginning,of the construction thereof, is bent into a coil 14 formed at the bottom of an outer V-shaped upright or supporting member 15 the apex of which is bent into a coil 16. At the upper end the supporting member 15 terminates in a coil 17. From the coil 17 the strand extends across forming a straight or crown portion 18.
At the termination of the relatively long crown portion 18 the wire strand is coiled at 19 and formed to provide an intermediate V-shaped support 20 including a coil 21. The intermediate V support. 2021 joins by the coil 22, the bottom portion 23 which extends across and joins, by the coil 24, with an inner-V-shaped support 25, which includes a v coil 26. The inner V shaped support25 joins, by the coil 27 the central, relatively short, crown portion 28. From the center or the central. crown portion 28 the wire strand is bent, successively, into a coil 29,
a V-shaped' inner support 30 including the coil31, a coil 32, a bottom portion 33, a coil 34, an intermediate V-shaped. support including a coil 36 a coil 37, a relatively long crown portion 38, a coil. 39, an outer V- shapedsupport 40 including a coil 41. at the apex thereof and terminates in a coil 42, to form a halt portion which is an exact duplicate of the portions 14-28 inclusive and hereinbefore described in. detail.
At the commencement of the coil 14. and at the termination of the coil 42 the wire strand is extended as at 43 to form a means for connecting thesaid endsto the bed frame.

All of the spring devices used in a bed structure, such, as is indicated in Figure 1, are constructed alike and all of such devices, which extend entirely across the bed have one outer vertical support anchored to the outside bed rail and the other outer vertical support anchored to the oppositeoutside bed rail and all of the upper or crown portions of the spring devices are joined with the lashing members and all of the transversely disposed bottom portions are suitably anchored in the rails 2, 3, 4. and 5 as shown, or uponthe equivalentportions of any desired. type o t frame structure.
lVhile the construction of thespring de scribed and shown is a preferable embodiment of my invention, that is, withbends, coils and supporting members at a uni form distance along a single strand' of wire and the supporting members at. a uniform height, it is ,to be understood that the severa-l supporting members or coils and the bends formed in the wire may be varied in also be used for the smaller three-quarter and two-third sizes of beds and in the said modified form the same general arrangement of the spring is present as in the larger sizes of springs used for the full size bed.
In the modified form the single strand is shown as bent to produce two centrally disposed V supporting members 44 joined by a straight across bottom portion l5rand two parallelly disposed and oppositely extended crown portions 4L6 which terminate in outer V-shaped supporting members like those of the preferred form and whose lower coiled ends terminate in hook portions 47 adapted for being fixed in any suitable manner on the voutside rails of the couch, bed or davenport.
The point of connection of the various inner V supports (of the preferred form 01' spring construction) with the bottom or hearing portions may also be formed as loops as shown in the modified form instead of coils as shown in the preferred form.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the novel details of construction, the advantages and the manner of application of the spring structure to the various uses to which it is applicable, will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention relates.
That I claim is:
1. A spring composed of a single strand of wire formed to comprise opposite ends formed to provide fastening elements, V-
shaped supports whose upper ends merge with cross over portions that constitute parallel overlapped crown portions, other V- shaped supports merging with the inner overlapped ends of said crown portions and whose lower ends merge with a cross over portion constituting a bottom bearing for said spring.
2. Aspring composed of asingle strand of wire formed to comprise opposite ends formed to provide fastening elements,V-shaped supports whose upper ends merge with cross over portions that constitute overlapped parallel crown portions, V-shaped supports merging with the inner overlapped ends of said crown portions and whose lower ends merge with inwardly extending cross over bottom portions overlapping in parallel relation and constituting a bottom bearing for said spring, a centrally disposed crown portion and additional V-shaped supports merging with theinner ends of said cross over bottom portions and the outer ends of said central crown portion forsupporting the latter upon the former. 1 v
3. The combination with a bed frame of a plurality of equi-distantly spaced parallelly positioned spring elements each formed from a single strand of wire to comprise opposite ends providing means of connection to the frame, V-shaped sup-ports whose upper ends are coil wound and merge with cross over portions that constitute overlapped parallel crown portions, other V- shaped'supports'whose upper ends are coil wound and merge with the inner overlapped ends of said crown portions and whose lower ends merge with inwardly extending cross over bottom portions overlapping in parallel' relation and constituting a bottom bearing for the spring elements, a centrally disposed crown portion and additional V- shaped supports whose lower ends 'merge with the inner ends of said cross over bottom portions and whose upper ends are coil wound and merge with the outer ends of said central crown portions for supporting the latter on the former; and lashing devices connected to and through each aligning set of coils at the V-shaped supports tops and to the frame to flexibly secure the spring units in spaced relation.
