Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.A
CHARLES '.I. DAVISON, OF BUSHNELL, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF `ANI) A. B. 85 J. R. SPERLING, OF SAMEIDLAOE.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,613, dated June 30, 1874 application tiled Y May s, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GHARLEs T. Davison, of Bushnell, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a gate to move longitudinally on a line with the fence in opening and closing, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my gate; and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same through the line fr, Fig. l.
The gate is constructed of a series of horizontal boards, A A, connected at their ends by vertical boards'B B, between the upper ends of which is secured a beam, C, inclined on its under side from nearthecenter upward toward both ends. The gate is braced by two inclined braces, D D, running from the ends downward to the lower end of a vertical board, E, in the center. G is the main post, through which the gate passes, it being' supported in the same by a grooved roller, a, upon which the beam G runs. The gate is further supported by an arm, H, projecting toward the rear from the middleof the gate and passing between two rollers, b b, in the next fence-post. Ordinarily in gates of this class this supporting-arm extends from and forms the top bar of the gate, which requires a joist considerably longer than can be had at all times, By my arrangement a much smaller piece may be used, and it also supports the gate more evenly. In the main post G at the bottom of the gate, on one or both sides thereof, is a roller, d, which enables the gate to be easily opened when the wind blows against it, as otherwise the gate would rnb against the post. I represents the latch pivoted to ears on top of `the -bar C, and which` is raised by the same rope j' that operates the gate, the
end of said rope being fastened to a bail, c, attached to the bar C under the latch. is fastened a little ahead of the highest point of the inclined plane, so as to insure this point being over the roller a, when the pull of the rope has no more effect. The highest point of the incline, it will be seen, is not in the middle, but a little back, for the purpose of'. making the back part a little the steepest, as the gate shuts somewhat harder than it opens. Between the main posts G are gr-ooved rollers h h, around which the rope f passes, which answer for the purpose of making an angle to carry the rope upward, where it passes over pulleys i, to make another angle to carry the rope out to the side post J ,so that persons approaching on horseback or in vehicles may readily open the gate. By causing the rope to make these angles it carries the rope up out of the way of stock or persons when it is necessary to carry them across sidewalks. In the posts G', on which the gate shuts, is hinged an L- shaped plate, m, to enter a notch, n, in the projecting end of the top bar O, for the purpose of raising the gate slightlyY when shut, so as to remove any weight on the supporting-arm H when the gate is closed. To the latch I are attached pendent wires p, to enable children on foot to open the gate without climbing up to raise the latch.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a gate having a doubleinclined top rail, (hand a notch, n, to engage Y with a pivoted latch, m, the auxiliary latching device I, pivoted at its rear end, 'and operated by means of the bail c and rope f, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.

.T T. SANDERS, B. F. PINCKLY.
