Be it known that l, THoMAs J. MURPHY, a subject ot the King of Great Britain, and a resident otl Astoria, in the county n o'l Queens and State of New York, have made an invention ippertaining to a Phonograph Stop, which invention is fully set forth/in the following ,speclication My invention has for its object to provide an ellcil nt automatic means for stopping the operation of a phonograph. lit may be used for stopping the operation ost any motor that actuatesthe record table ot a phonograph.
The inventionmay be contained in structureswhich in their details may loe modified. To illustrate a practical application of my invention I have selected a phonograph stop mechanism for opening the circuit of yan electric motor that actuates the record table, as an example of structures containing my invention and shall Adescribe it `hereinafter. The structure, selected for the purpose of an example is shown .in the accompanying drawing.

y The automatic stop mechanism is vcontainedwithin the sheet metal case 1 having a cover 2, wherebythe major part otthe mechanism is Vcompletely enclosed. The case is'located on the top of the cabinet and beneath the record table 3 and in kproximity to the supporting base 4t ofl the tone arm 5. An insulating block 7 having sockets S and 9. for the reception of, conductors 10 2nd 11 of one side of the motor circuit, is located in an opening Jformed in one side oit the case 1. A springcontact 12 is connected to the socket 8 vand to thefblock 7 by inea-ns of the screw 13. A :rigid arm 14; forms a limit stop to the flexible'contact 12. The joint will remain in either one o'ft-hese positions by reason of. the spring action kot' the contact-15 when it is placed against one or the `other lof the stops'21 and22.
Means isprcwided for breaking the toggle joint so as tofopenthecontacts l2 and 15'M`avndlthus break the cir'ciiitthrough the 'onductors 10 'and 11 and consequently break the circuit through the motor of the phono- 'gra/ph.' Thesaid means may bemanually operated or it maybe antomatically'operated at a predetermined time in the 'op-eration of the phonograph. The means operates upon one ofthe links oi' the vtoggle to throw the joint between theglinks to4 one position `or k the .other, `that' is.` against one or 4the other of the stops; I21 andf22. @This isae- I a bell crank lever 23 that is pivotally supported on the pin 20L Ithas an arm 2&1 that is connected to the link 19. The connection is made by ya inger 25 Alocated atthe .end oft-he arm 24 that entends into ,an opening 26 Vtormedinj thelink 19.y There play between the edge of the of the screw free snap movement of the toggle, due to the elasticity of thestrip 15, whenthe toggle is shifted by the operation of the lever o3 from one'V side of the center line to the apposite side. Thus the contacts 12 and l5 may be opened by movement of the lever 23. The lever 23 extends outside of the record table so that it can be manually operated. The contacts are also automatically' opened by means oit the bell crank lever 27' which is pivot-ally supported within the case 1. It has an arm 28 in position to operate upon the toggle 19 to open the contacts 12 `and 15. The arm has a finger 29 'in position to torce the arm 19 awayrfrom the stop 21.
The bell crank lever 27 also has an arm 29 that protrudes iromethe case 1 and tcwards the base 4 o'f the tone arm. il split collar 30 is secured to the tone arm and consequently is carried thereby. A Yforked member 31 is pivotally and rictionally connected and secured to the collar 230. i Suitable irictiona-l washers 32 may be located on opposite sides of the forked members 31 and the parts may be secured together by rlhe lingers 3/-1V suitable rivet or screw 33. and 35 are bent downward so as to be located on opposite sides of the arm 29 of the bell crank lever 27 and so as to be Vengaged thereby, in so far as movement i the tone arnim-ay be swung to a position that the reproducing needle will be located outside or beyond the edge of the record table and, in so doing, the linger Si will engage the arm 29 so as to swing the member 31 on its pivot to a position beyond` the recond tripping position of the arm. The lever 29 being limited in its movement by the stop 36 which extends upward 'from the bottom of the case 1 into an opening 37 formed in the bell crank lever 27. The opening of the bell crank lever 27, suiiicient to throw the toggle and permit the contacts 12 `and 15 to open. When a record is about to be played the arm is swung` inward until the needle is brought to a position on. or above the plate at which'point it is desired to have the machine stop in its operation. This inward movement brings the finger 35 into engagement with the arm 29 of the bell crank lever 27 and the vforked member 31 is adjusted automatically to its tripping position. The tone arm 5 is then placed at the edge of the plate and in position to start the reproduction et the recorded sound of the record plate and the machine is st-art-ed by the operation ot the bell crank lever 23 which is moved so as to close the contacts 12 and 15. Vhen the reproducing needle reaches the 3nd of the recordl the finger 35 engages the bell crank lever 27 and causes the switch that is thus formed to be tripped and break the circuit of the motor, the switch opening with a snap action.

2. ln a stop mechanism i'or sound reproducing machines, the combination with a record support, driving means for the latter and a tone arm movable back and forth across a record on said support, of controlling means for said driving means compris ing a .strip device having a tripping part, and a yoke yieldably carried by the tone arm having spaced abutments for successive setting' engagement with oppositesides of said tripping part during a back and forth movement of the tone arm to position said yoke for moving said part when the tone arm reaches the end of la record.
3. ln a stop mechanism for sound reproducing machines, the combination with a record support. driving means `for the latter and a tone arm movable back and forth across a record on said support. of Controlling means for said driving means compris` ing an actuating arm located adjacent the tone arm and a yoke pivotally supported on the tone arm by yield-able frictional means for successiva setting engagement with opposite sides ol saidv tripping part during a back and forth movement of the tone arm to position said yoke `lor moving said arni when the tone arm reaches the end ot a record.
1. ln a stop mechanism for sound reproducing machines, the combination with a record support, driving means for the latter and a. tone arm movable back and `forth across a record on said support, of controlling means for said driving means comprising a pair of electric contacts, spring means for moving one ot' said contacts to separate the same, a toggle joint ttor resisting movement of said movable contact, a lever for breaking said toggle joint, and adevice yieldably carried by the tone arm having spaced abutments for successive setting engagement with opposite sides of said lever during a back and forth movement of the tone arm to position said device `for moving said lever when the tone arm reaches the end o'f a record.
5. In a stop mechanism for sound reproducing machines, the combination With a record support, driving means for the latteil and a tone arm movable back and :forth across a record on said support, of controlling means for said driving means comprising a pair of electric contacts, spring means for moving one of said contacts to separate the same, toggle arms connected With said movable contact, a sto-p for holding said arms in alignment with said contacts engaged, a lever provided With stop means and having a limited movement for engaging and moving said arms out of alignment to release said movable contact, and a yoke yieldably carried by the tone arm having spaced abntments i'or successive setting engagement with opposite sides of said lever during back and forth movement of the tone arm to position said yoke for moving said lever when the tone arm reaches the end of a record.
6. A stop mechanism for sound reproducing machines, comprising an electric switch, spring means tending to open the same, trip means for holding said switch closed, including an arm having a limited movement for actuating said trip means to release the switch, and a device Vadapted for yieldable actuation by the tone arm of the machine and provided With spaced abutinents `for successive setting engagement with opposite sides ot' said trip arm during a back and forth movement of the tone arm to position said device 'for .moving said trip arm when the tone arm reaches the end of a record.
