To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT E. BRIDG- WATER, citizen of the United States, and resident of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Typewriting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to typewriting or like machines, and more particularly to the paper feed mechanism thereof.
The main object of my invention, generally stated, is to provide improved means for mounting the paper feed release lever or device in order to render the construction more substantial and provide for readily mounting, detaching and replacing such lever or device.
To the above and other ends which will hereinafter appear, my invention consists in the features of construction, arrangements of parts, and combinations of devices set forth in the following description and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

an improvement of the constructions disclosed in the patent to Joseph B. Holden, No. 1,458,133, dated June 12, 1923, and in an application of the said Joseph B. Holden filed July 1, 192%, Serial No. 723389.
The invention is shown embodied in the present instance in a Remington portable machine though the invention is not restricted to use in such machines, but may be included in typewriting or like machines generally. Only so much of the machine is shown as is necessary to arrive at an understanding of the present invention.
In the Remington portable machine many parts thereof are made of comparatively thin sheet metal to provide a light and compact machine. Heretofore in such machines it has been customary to form as an inte ral part of a sheet metal support for the reed rollers a turned bearing member in which was firmly fixed and permanently secured a pivot pin on which the feed roller release lever was pivoted, as disclosed in said Holden patent. Considerable strain is eX- erted on the part-s to cast off the feed rollers, and in the prior construction injury sometimes resulted which rendered replacement of certain individual parts necessary. In such prior construction replacement of individual parts was, to say the least, diflicult and in some instances required more extensive replacen'ients to attain the desired ends. By my present construction a more substantial and efiective mounting for the release lever is provided and one in which the necessity for individual replacement is less liable to occur, but which may nevertheless be readily effected when desired, as will hereinafter clearly appear. I
The main sheet metal body portion 1 of the carriage carries end plates .2 provided with hearings to support the spindle 3 of a cylindrical platen 4. Paper feed rollers 5 are supported by a plurality of carriers 6, which in turn are mounted for a slight rocking motion on a supporting member 7, preferably made of sheet metal. This member 7 is formed with integral bearing portions 8 that receive pivot rods 9 supported by sheet metal brackets 10 detachably seeareatathe ffi supporting member 7 extends roughout a considerable portion of the length of the carriage and is mounted described to receive a. fore and aft pivotal movement to press the feed rollers againstthe platen, or tlie paper thereon by a forward move ment, and simultaneously release the feed rollers by a rearward pivotal movement. The feed rollers 5 are normally held against the platen by springs 11 which bear clownwardly against arms 12 that are integral with and project forwardly from the sheet metal support 7, as disclosed in said hereinbe'fore mentioned Holden application.
It has been found desirable to provide a substantially c -shaped channel iron 13 of sheet metal which constitutes a re-intoreing or stiffening strip that is fixedly secured to the support 7: and extends longitudinally thereof throughout its length. This strip stiflens the support 7 and causes the cast-oft motion transmitted to it at one end to effectively carry all the feed rollers away from the platen.
As thusit'ar described in detail, the parts may be constructed substantially as dis of the right-hand end plate 2 of the carriage.
The upper end of the release lever 1% is provided with a finger-piece 20, whereas the lower end portion of thelever has two semi-circular notches 21 and 22 therein; each conforming to the curvature of the roller 15 with which it coacts. W'hen the parts are in the position shown in F 1 the feed rollers, omitted from this view to avoid confusion in the illustration are in the normal position, spring pressed against the platen. lVhen, however. the finger piece 20 is shifted rearwardly from the F 1 position there is a wedging' action of the lever against the contact roller 15 which carries thefulcrnms of the lever rearwardly and with it the support 7 on which it is pivoted. This turns the support 7 rear- .wardly on its pivots 9 and carries the feed rollers away fromlhe platen. An extreme backward movement of the finger-piece 20 brings the recess 22 into register with the roller contact 15, and when the latter is seated in said recess the feed rollers will be held against return movement from their castofi" position. permitting the springs 11 to return the parts to the Fig. 1 position and apply the force ot the springs to the feed rollers.
Formerly the pivot by which the release lever was connected to and carried by sheet metal support 7 ivas permanently fixed in an integral bent bearing ear formed on the member 7. This led to the rlitiiculties. hereinhetore pointed out and which are-over come my present invention as will now appear. a
I provide by the present construction a substantial cast metal bearing member 23. shown in detail in Fig. 4. This bearing memher has an open-inouthsubstantially U-shaped bearing opening 24- therein which receives the pivot of the release lever, designated as a whole by the reference numeral and shown in detail in Fig. 5. From a consideration of Figs. 1 and it it will be understood that when the hearing member-23 is secured against the 'rear face of the pivoted support 7 the latter clos s the open mouth of the bearing opening at and prevents a removal of the pivot 2" from such opening. In order to firmly though detachably secure the hearing member to the support 7, I provide a trzu "erye opening 26 through the bearing member and pass the stem of a headed screw 27 through such opening; the threaded end of the screw engaging in a tapped opening in thesupport 7 and its re-infoicing strip 13. The bearing member alsohas a llangre 28 that overlies the upper edge of the support 7, as clearly shown in Fig. 41. This prevents the bearing member troin turning on the screw 27 and the latter holds the men'rber firmly clamped against the rear face of the support.
it will be seen that the pivot is formed with two enlargements or shoulders 29 and 530 that embrace the bearing member on opposites-rides and prevent an axial displaceinent of the pivot in its bearing opening 24.

Outs de of the enlargement or shoulder 30 on thepivot is a slightly reduced hearing portion 35 on which the release lever 11 is mounted and adapted to turn. Beyond the portion 32 the-pivot is reduced to provide a bearing portion on which a spring plate 3- is mounted to turn. This plate extends upwardly beside the release lever and has its upper end bent laterally at 3 1* where it extends through an open ing in said lever and tends to prevent any undue looser-ices ot' the lever on its pivot. The portion 33 ot the pivot also receives a washer or head 36 which is firmly he d in place by riveting the outer end of the pivot as indicated at 37. The release lever and plate 3% are thus held in place on the bearing portions and 33 respectively of the pivot, being confined between the enlargement 30 and the head 36..
The present construction provides a substantial and firm mounting for the release lever on the sheet metal support 7, and one which enables the lever to be readily mounted on the support. Nevertheless the lever, its pivot 25 and the plate 34 may be read ily detached as a unit and replaced should occasion require; the lever and its connect-- ed parts being detachable from the bearing member when the latter is detached from. the sup-port 7.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a feed roller support, a release lever therefor, and means for pivotally mounting the lever on said support com prising a bearing member detachably connected to said support, and a pivot on which said lever turns and which is seated in and supported by said bearing member and detachable therefrom when the bearing member is detached from said support.
2. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a feed roller upport, a release lever therefor, and means for pivotally mounting the lever on said support eomprising a bearing member detachably connected to said support, and a pivot on which said lever turns and which is seated in and supported by said bearing member and detachable therefrom when the bearing member is detached from said support, said pivot having a shoulder and a head, the latter being riveted thereon and between which shoulder and head the lever is received and adapted to turn.
3. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a feed roller support, a release lever therefor, and means for pivotally mounting the lever on said support comprising a cast metal bearing member detach ably connected to said support, and a pivot on which said lever turns and which is seated in and supported by said bearing member and is detachable therefrom when the bearing member is detached from said support, said pivot coacting with the bearing member to prevent an axial movement of the pivot relatively to said member.
4. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a pivoted feed roller support, a release lever for shifting said pivoted support, a contact with which said lever coacts, and means for pivotally mounting the lever n said pivoted support comprising a bearing member detachably' secured to said support and havin substantially U- shaped bearing opening therein, and a pivot on which said lever turns and which is seated in said bearing opening and supported by said bearing member and detachable therefrom whenrthe bearing member is detached from said support.
5. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a feed roller support, a release lever therefor, and means for pivotally mounting the lever on said support comprising a bearing member detachably secured against a side and overlapping an edge of said support and having an openmouth bearing opening closed by the support when said member is in place, and a pivot on which said lever turns and which is seated in said open-mouth bearing and is removable therefrom when the bearing member is detached from said support.
6. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a feed roller support, a re lease lever therefor, and means for pivotally mounting the lever on said support comprising a cast metal bearing member detachably secured to said support. and a pivot on which said lever turns, said pivot being detachably seated in a bearing opening in said bearing member and having enlarged portions that embrace the bearing member on opposite sides thereof and prevent an axial movement of the pivot.
7. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a. feed roller support, a release lever therefor, and means for pivotally mounting the lever on said support comprising a cast metal bearing member having an open-mouth bearing opening therein that is closed by said support when the bearing member is secured thereto. a screw for detachably securing said member to the support. and a pivot on which said lever turns, said pivot being seated in said open-mouth bearing opening and detachable therefrom when the member is detached from said support and having enlarged portions that embrace the bearing member on opposite sides thereof and prevent an axial movement of the pivot. said pivot also having a head riveted on one end thereof and between which head and one of said enlarged portions said lever is confined and adapted to turn.
8. In a typewriting or like machine, the combination of a feed roller support, a re lease lever therefor, and means for pivot-. allv mounting the lever on said support comprising a cast metal bearing member having an open-mouth bearing opening therein that is closed bv said support when the bearing member is secured thereto, and also having a flange that engages over one edge of the support for preventing said member from turning thereon, a screw for detachably securing said bearing member to said support, and a pivot on which said lever turns and which is held in ptac'ej in said open-mouthbearing ripening. when said member is secured to the support but may be removed from such opening When the mem her is detached from the support.
9. In a typeivriting or like machine, the combination of a feed roller support, a release lever therefor, and means for pivotvlly mounting the lever on said support comprising a bearing member having an open-mouth bearing opening that is closed by said support when thebearing member is secured thereto, a screw for detachably securing said bearing member to the support, and a pivot on which. said lever is mounted to turn, said pivot being seated in said bearing opening and having enlarged 15 portions that embrace the bearing member and prevent an axial movement of the pivot, one of said enlarged portions having a Hat face to coact with the support and prevent the pivot from turning in its bearing opening.
