FILING AND ETORAGE CABINET.
Application filed August 3, 1922. Serial No. 579,452.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,"Eowaxn W. SALMON, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Filing and Storage Cabinets, of which the following is-a specification.
'This invention relates'to cabinets.
One object of the invention is to provide acabinet particularly adapted for the filing and storage of motion picture films or other combustible or valuable records, embodying among other characteristics, a cabinet pro vlded with a compartment in which a record holdin device is mounted for the 'reception and support of the record material to be preserved and which has connection with a swinging door whereby upon opening of the door, the holder may be swung forwardly to permit ready access thereto and whereby upon release. of the door, the holder will move rapidly to its normal position and cause the door to close in sealed relationwith the doorjamb and thereby exclude moisture and prevent possibility of fire in the cabinet through careless handling of matches,-smoking materials or external combustion.
Another object is to provide a record holder embodying a base and a holder supported above the base on suitable connections arranged between the base and holder and wherein the connections are locked to the base by suitable locking devices to prevent accidental disconnection of the mounting between the base and holder.
Another object of the invention is to provide a. cabinet. having a hinged door to which a. movable record holder in the compartment is connected so as to limit outward swinging movement of thedoor and to effect automatic closin of the door when theoperator releases the same.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a cabinet of the nature stated, which is constructed of fireproof material and in which the door of the cabinet may be maintained normally locked, there being means remote fronuthe door to operate automatically in the'event of a fire in the cabinet and permit the free and ready escape of gases, odors and fumes, thereby relieving the walls of the cabinet and the door from internal pressure, and whereby in the event of a fire within the cabinet danger of transmission of flames fumes or ases to the buildingcin which t-h is installed is prevented.
It is still further designed to provide a' fire-proof cabinet having one or more com-' partments in which provision is made to support the record material and in which the support is connected to the door to limit outward swing thereof short of dead center so as to automatically close the door quickly when the operator inserts or removes record materials from the holder and door.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangements of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims hereto ap ended, it being understood that various c anges in the form, proportion and minordetails of construction, within-the scope of-the claims,
-may be resorted to without departing from the spirit, or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of two superimposed cabinets, partly in elevation, showing the record 'holder and the door closed in the upper compartment and the position of the holder when the door is open. 1 4 I Figure 2 is a detail perspective view of the record holder and its mounting.
Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view through the holder.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectionalview through the door jamb.
Referring accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated one embodiment of my invention, in which both superimposed sections or units A and B are formed alike, it. will be understood that the interiors of the compartments and the general makeup of the cabinet units or sections or the cabinet itself, as the case e cabinet releases the now more particularly to the there is located a holder for the record matrial which has apeculiar mounting and which has connection with the door of the compartment whereby to maintain the door normally Masad -sand locked, there being preferably disposed in the compartment wall, whatever the nature. of the cabinet, an outlct' to the atmosphere, whereby/in the event of the generation of gases or fumes in the compartment they may permitted to pass outwardly through the outlet-and thereby relieve the walls of the cabinetand the door of strain incident 'to intern-.11 pressure,

filed August .3, 1922,
alias described in my co-pending applicadoor 7 is preferably hinged at itslower side,
as at 8, and it has its'inner face formed with Q a continuous rib 9 and anadjacent contintv ous groove 10 adapted to cooperate with the continuous rib and groove form of door jamb for'the purpose of forming a sealed closing of the door 7, there being flexible material 11 preferably disposed in each of the grooves for compression by the corresponding ribs .to facilitate the prevention of leaking of moisture, fumes, gases or smoke from within, as well as from without.
,A hanger12 is disposed over the door opening of each compartment 4, and has a ravitating latch 13,. designed to hold the door 7 normally locked. To open the door,
upward movement of the' gravitating latch 13 on its pivot 14 will permit outward swinging movement of the door. The door has a handle '15 to facilitate opening of the same, and if desired a cataloging or index card holder 16 may be secured to the door.
Motion picture films are generally wound upon spools, such as shown in dotted lines at 17 in Fig. 1,.and in the filing and storage, of motion picture films, the main purpose for which the present invention is provided, I disclose a suit-able holder 18, which in the construction shown is of a. suljistautially segmcntal, truncated, cylindrical formation,
constructed of suitable material, preferably metal, and composed of spaced sides 19 and 20, connected along theirlower edgcs by the, periplieral portion 21. The holder is open-at the top to pei'mit ready iiisertion and removal of the film spool 17.'
,The holder is mounted for a floating action, within the compartment toward and away from the'door opening and'to this end, the holder is supported above the bottom of the compartment on c-rossedoppositely inclined links 22 and 23. One link islonger than the other, as shown. The longer link extends upwardly from the front of the compartment'and includes legs a and b and a bight or connecting portion 0 at the lower or front ends thereof. The inner or upper ends .=of; the, legs a and bare provided with.
laterally inwardly directed pivot members 24, which are adapted to fit loosely in the horizontally aligning sockets 25 at the rear endof the holder. The shorter link 23 includes legs d and 6 connected at their rear.
lower ends by the connecting portion f and at their forward upper ends they are provided'with pivot members 26 adapted to fit in the corresponding horizontally aligning sockets 27 of the holder.
In the bottom of the compartment-,' I
ing ribs 29 and adjacent the front end of the ribs they are each notched to provide a forward pair of seats 31. The seats 30 are designed to seat the connection portion f of the legs (1 and e of the shorter link 23.
of the ribs 29 are designed to seat the bight or connectmg part 0 between the legs a and b of the link 22. When the links are thus connected to the holder and thus disposed The forward horizontally aligning seats 31 in the front and rear pairs of seats, the
adapted to slide into and out of the hollow ribs and over the connecting portions 0 and f, of the respective legs of the respective links 23-and 22, so as to prevent accidental unseating-of the links from said seats. The
outer end of each locking pin 32 is provided with an inwardly and backwardly directed yieldable portion 33, terminating in a yieldable book 34 for a snap connection with the bight portion 0 ofthe longer link 22,- whercby to insure a firm and substantial locking of the locking pin 32 in the hollow ribs. These locking pins 32, including their portions 33' and '34, are resilient, yieldable or bendable, or otherwise formed so as to provide for yieldability, especially of the locking portions to permit a snapping connection thereof with the connecting portions between the legs aand b of the link 22 and topermit .of ready disconnection of the hooks 34 from said connecting part c.
The holder is provided with an overhanging cam rib 35 on each side adjacent its upper open top and. each cam surface extends substantially the entire length of the holder. a
The holder is connected with the door by necting' bight portion iv between them at their forward ends. The inner ends of the legs are each provided with an eye 37 by means of which and a suitable fastening 38, the legs 9 and h of the link 36 are fixedly secured to the sides of the holder under and adjacent the respective overhanging rib 35,
whereby the, holder in normal position lies upon the upper surface of the legs 9 and h of the links 36 at the inner ends of the legs, as shown in the upper portion of Fig. 1,
r and also in Fig. 2. The connecting portion i of the legs 9 and h is detachably secured in a sprin clip 39 whereby the link 36 may be detacha ly secured to the door. .The link 36 has a downward inclination in its connection with the holder and the door with the result that when the door 7 is; swung outwardly on its hinge 8, the holder is rocked on its supporting links 22 and 23, forwardly and upwardlyto present the open u per part of the holder in such position such tension that when the door is released by the operator the tendenc of the legs 9 pivot 14 until the door has passed the inner end of the latch and taken proper tight, sealed joint connection with the door jamb when the latch falls downwardly and enages the outer face of the door at the oint between the upper edge of the door and the door jamb and thereby effects an auto matic locking of the door.
As has been hereinbefore stated, and articularly illustrated, claimed and described in my co-pending a plication, filed Aug.
3, 1922 Serial No. 5 9,451, each compartment may be provided with an outlet to the atmosphere so that in the event of a fire in the compartment incident to spontaneous combustion or from other.causes, the gases or fumes may pass out through the outlet 39' to thereby preserve the walls of the compartment or to relieve them and the door from internal strain and possible deof the door.
struction incident to explosion of gases. The communication between the interior of each compartment and the passage 39' may be controlled by a suitable valve 40 pivoted at 41 in the passage 39 for a normal gravitating movement to its seat to thereby effectually close communication between the compartment and the respective outlet so as to prevent the entrance of gases or moisture into the compartment through the valve outlet' and whereby to permit the internal pressure due to the expansion of gases in the compartment to unseat the'valve andpass on out through the outlet '39. Any gases passing out of the lower compartment in Fig. 1 would pass up through the flue 41 past the outlet 39 and the valve 40,but as this feature of the invention forms part of the invention in my co-pending application, filed August 3, 1922 Serial No. 579,451, fur ther description of the same herein is un-. necessary.
