IMPROVEMENT IN DIES FOR FORMING PLOWSHARES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 152,578. dated June 30, 1874; application filed April 21, 1874.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, O. H. THOMPSON, of Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dies for Forming Plowshares; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in dies for forming plowshares and it consists in the peculiar formation of the dies, whereby the shares are upset or formed at a single blow of the die, as will be more fully described hereafter.

The accompanying drawings represent my invention.

Arepresents the bed-plate or base of the die, which consists of a block of metal having a portion of its upper surface removed so as to form the vertical shoulder b, and the bottom 0 of the die, extending at right an- Extending out from the side of bottom, is a second smaller shoulder, d, of the shape shown, and against which the share is formed. Upon the edge of the block (1, extending up above the level of the bottom 0, is a lug or projection, 0, between which and the shoulder d the flat plate g, out of which the share is to be formed, is placed and held in position. Across the rear end of the die is placed the gage plate i, which can be ad justed back and forth at will by the setscrew h, so as to regulate the amount of curve the share shall have at its point. The upper part of the die is formed from the block j, which has a portion of. its under surface cut away, so as .to form the vertical shoulder I, which corresponds to the vertical edge on of the block a and the fiat surface it, which projects over the bottom 0. On the under side of the fiat surface a is formed the shoulder 0, of the shape shown, and which forces the pointed end of the share or plate 9 over against and around the curved edge of the shoulder d. The plate g, from which the share is formed, is first cut or stamped into the shape shown in Fig. 3 then heated and placed in the die, when by a single stroke of the drop its point is upset and the share formed complete.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The construction of the dies a j, having the shoulders (I 0, substantially as shown.

2. In combination with the dies (0 j, theadjustable gage i and screw it, substantially as specified.
