CLEMENT D. HELLYEBJ, 015 LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
VALVE REAMER. r 1 E Application filed March 8, 1924. Serial No. 697,851.
To all whom it may concern: p
@ Be it known that I, CLEMENT I'IELLYER, a citizen. of the United States, residing at LosAngeles, in the'county of Los Angeles and State of Californiajhave invented a cer tain new and useful Improvement in Valve Reamers, of which the following is a ful clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
1 This invention relates to valve reamers which areadapted for use on the valve seats of gasoline engines.
The general object of the invention is to provide an improved re-amer wherein the parts may be interchanged for use on different types of valve seats.
One of the specific objects of the invention is to provide a valve .reamer including a stock and a handle with a removable and interchangeable pilot.
Another object of the invention is to provide a; valve reamer including a stock and handle with a removable cutter wherein the cutter serves to hold a pilot in place.
A further object of the invention is to provide a valve reamer wherein both the pilot and the cutter may be removed and replaced by pilots and cutters of other dimensions and wherein the cutter serves to hold the pilot in operative position.
Other objects of th invention will be apparent from the following description taken in connection. with the accompanying drawings wherein Fig. 1 is an elevation of my improved reamer; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing parts in section; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail in elevation showing the lower portion of the stock; Fig. 4 is a 'view showing the manner of using the reamer; Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the reamer, and Fig. 6 is a section on line 6-6, Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing by reference characters, I have shown a reamer at 10. The reamer comprises a stock or a body portion 11 having an aperture 12 extending therethrough. A handle 14 is shown as extending through the aperture 12 and this handle preferably is of such a diameter that it has a snug sliding fit within the aperture thus allowing ready removal but preventing accidental loss.
The end 15 of the stock 11 is preferably tapered as at 16. The taper extends from the shoulder 17 to the end of the stock. The end 15 of the stock is also shown as provided with a cylindrical recess 18 which extends to a point adjacent the end of'the v taper 16. The cylindrical recess 18 is preferably coaxial with the axis of the stock 11. The end 15 of the reamer is provided with opposed slots 20 which extend through the portion15. The slots 20 may terminate at 21 adjacent the end of the aperture 18.
A pilot for the reamer is 'shown at 25. Thispilot is adapted to fit within the valve stem cavity and the portion 26 of the pilot should be of a diameter to have a snug slid ing fit within the valve stem cavity. The pilot is shown as provided with a shoulder 27 and with a reduced portion 28 adj acent the shoulder.
the aperture 18.
The cutter is shown at 30. This cutter is provided with the usual cutting teeth 31 and with an axial bore 32 which is preferably tapered to correspond to the taper of the portion 15. As a result of the tapered portions, when the cutter 30 is moved along the stock toward the handle 14 the taper provided will cause the opposed portions of the portion 15 to bind together and consequently to engage the portion 28 otthe pilot 25 and prevent loss of this pilot.
In using my cutter the operator grasps the handle 14, lnserts the pilot 25 in the valve seat aperture and presses the cutter 30 upon the valve seat. A slight pressure on the handle lt causes the cutter teeth 31 to ream the valve seat.
Different gasoline engines are provided with valve seats of different dimensions and with diiterent sizes of valve rods. As a consequence of this, it has heretofore been necessary to provide a. reamer for each type of valve. By the use of my invention this difficulty is overcome since it is a simple matter to remove the cutter and the pilot 25 and to substitute therefor other pilots 25 and other cutters 30" as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. All of the cutters 30 will have the same internal taper 32 and internal diametersregardless of their outer dimensions, while all of the pilots 25 will have their stems 28 of the same diameter regard.
less of the external diameter.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that I have provided an improved reamer which is highly eflicient in The reduced portion 28 is of such a size that it slides readily with-in use and wherein theparts are interchangeable so that great elficiency is provided.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A realner comprising a body portion having at one end a eyhndrical bore coaxial with the axis of the body portion, the diametrically opposite Walls defining the bore being slotted, a pilot, said pilothaving a portion fitted Within said bore, a cutter, said cutter having an axial hole therein, and beingadapted to fit on said body portion and means-whereby the cutter coacts with the body to hold the pilot in place.
' 2. A P82111161 comprising a body portion '-havin a handle at one end and havin a transverse slot atthe other end thereof, said slot dividing said body into two members, a
cylindrical cavity intersecting said slot, the
lower end 0?. said body portion being tapered, a removable pilot in said cavity, a removable cutter, and means to urge said two members of the body together to engage said pilot.
3. A reamer comprising a body portion having a removable handle member thereon adjacent one end, the other end of said body portion having a cylindrical bore coaxial With the axis of the body-portion, the opposed Walls of the last mentioned end being slotted, a pilot, said pilot having a portion fitted Within said bore, a cutter, said cutter ha ing. an axial hole therein, and being adapted to fit over the slotted portion, said cutter and said body portion having engag ing surfaces coacting to hold the pilot firmly in place.
at. A reamer comprisinga body portion tapered at one end and having a cylindrical borecoaxialnrith the axis of the body portion, the opposed Walls of the taperedend being slotted, a pilot, said pilothaving a shoulder at one end and a reduced portion adjacent the shoulder, said-reduced portion being fitted Within said bore, acuttensaid cutter having an axial hole therein, said hole being tapered to tit the taperon saidbody portion whereby when the cutter is: pushed along the body portion the coacting tapered port-ions Will operate to hold rhe-wpilot in place.
In testimony whereof, I hereu to. aflix my signature.
