Application filed September A further object is to provide an improved nailing machine of the type adapted to feed,
nails singly and successively by gravity down an inclined chute into position to be conveniently struck with a hammer.
A further object is to provide an imroved nailing machine of the class described of light weight yet of durable construction embodying features making it very practical and convenient for manipulation.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations all as hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification- Figure 1, is a view in side elevation, partly in section, of my improved nailing machine.
Figure 2, is a plan view of the same with cover of nail reservoir removed.
Figure 3, is an enlarged detail view showing a nail forced into material with consequent depression of detent actuating jaws.
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 44 of Figure 5.
Figure 5 is a sectional view on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Figure 6 is a similar view but with the detent actuating jaws in raised position.
Figure 7 is a detail sectional view of the lower extremity of the nail chute.
In the selected embodiment of the invention herein shown a portable frame 8 is provided with hand grips 9 and 10 and with two supporting legs 11 and 12. The leg 12 is pivotally mounted at 13 on the frame 8 and may be held in a plurality of adjusted positions by means of the screw 14 in the frame co-operable with the slot 15 in the leg 12. The purpose of the adjustment is to maintain the forward delivery end of the machine at different working elevations corresponding to the length of the shank 16 of the nails used.

slots 18 and 19 to form reservoir tracks leading to the slot or track 21 provieed by the spaced downwardly inclined strips and 22 on the frame. The nails are placed in the reservoir 17 and aided by the V- shaped projection 23 fall into the slots 18' and 19 and are subsequently fed by gravity down the track 21.
A pair of opposed levers 24 are pivotally mounted on the pins 25 and are normally retained by the spring 26 so that their forward ends, formingv the jaws 2'? are upwardly held adjacent the lower end of the track 21 so that a nail may pass from the track to the jaws and be held in the position shown in Figures 1 and 2 when a hammer may drive the nail into the article to be nailed and the machine thereafter rearwardly pulled to release the nail.
Detents are disposed in the path of the nails down the track 21 to effect single feeding of nails onto the jaws 27. As shown in Figures 4 and 5 adetent 28 is normally held so that its finger 29 projects across he track 21 to prevent passage of a nail. The detent 28 is pivotally mounted at 31 to the web 32 integral with the downwardly inclined strip 22 and is held in its projected position by means of the detent spring 33 coiled about the pin 34 positioned on the outwardly projecting flange 35 of the strip 22.
A second detent 36 is with its finger 37 pivotally mounted at 38 on the web 39 in tegral with the downwardly inclined strip 22- and is normally held in its retracted position by means of the detent spring 41 coiled about the pin 42 positioned on the outwardly projecting flange 43 of the strip 22 The positions of the detents as described are those assumed when the jaws 27 are in the position shown in Figures 3 and 4, the finger 29 of the detent 28 holding the column of nails in the chute 21. Upon rearwardly pulling the machine the jaws 27 are forced upwards by means of the coiled tension spring 26, as shown in Figure 6.
The cams 44 and 45 integral with the opposed levers 24 bear against the detents 28 and 36, the finger 37 of the detent 36 being returned to its projected position immediately behind the position of the detent 28, i. e., a space substantially equal to the diameter of one nail shank. A nailing tool, anail reservoir, a track vleadingtherefrom,springrpressed levers in opposed relation, having forward ends the path of the nails in said track upon 0pposite sides thereof, andnorinally preventing the feed of the nails, and means on sa d levers for engaging said detents and moving the jaw of one detent outwardly, and the jaw of the other detent inwardly tosuccessively release the nails one at a time.
