Application filed December 31, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, JULIUS Stunner BAU- MAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Miles, in the county of Runnels and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Vending Devices and Show Cases, of wnich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to vending devices of the class wherein a plurality of superposed articles are arranged to be discharged one at a time from a storage receptacle, and has for one of its objects to simplify the construction and increase the utility and efficiency of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which may be arranged in series, or mounted to be rotated, and including transparent sides to expose the contents of the device.
l/Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved device.
Figure 2 is a plan view, partly in section.
Figure 3 is a sectional detail on an enlarged scale.
Figure 4 is a detached perspective view from the interior of one of the dropper devices.
The improved device includes a receptacle or container for the articles to be dispensed, which may be a single container, a group of two or more containers arranged to be supported in any suitable manner, or a plurality of the containers arranged to be rotated upon a standard, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. It is not desired to limit the device to any specific arrangement or grouping of the containers, but for the purpose of illustration a plurality of the containers are shown mounted for rotation on a stationary standard, so that each of the containers may be disposed in convenient accessible position.
The containers are indicated at 10 and may be of any size or proportion dependent on the sizes or shapes of the articles to be dispensed, and each. container is open at the bottom and provided with a transverse slot 11 spaced above the open bottom. The front Serial No. 683,868.
member of each container above the slot 11 is of glass as represented at 12, so that the contents of the containers are visible.
The standard is represented at 13 and sup ported by a base or foot member 14, and the series of containers are coupled at their ends by spider devicesor frames, one of which is represented at 16. A. lower plate or floor, indicated at 17, connects the lower spider device, while a similar upper plate or closure 18 connects the upper spider device, the closure being removable.
At its upper end the standard 13 is provided with a detachable holding collar 19 which bears upon the upper plate 18, to prevent upward displacement of the connected containers and their supporting parts.
Mounted to swing at 20 below each of the slots 11, is a plate 21, each plate having a lateral offset 22 at the lower end extend ing respectively below the lower open end of the containers for a short distance when the plates are in one position as shown in full lines in Figure 3, and withdrawn from contact with or from beneath the container when in another position as shown by broken lines in the same figure.
The upper part of the plate 21. is reduced and a part of the reduced part folded upon itself as shown at 23 and the folded portion bent at right angles to the body of the plate to form a cut off to enter the slot 11 and project into the container when the plate is in one position as shown by broken lines in Figure 2, or withdrawn from the container when the plate is in another position, as shown by full lines in Figure 3.
The remainder of the reduced portion of the plate is bent into a spring tongue 2 1 which bears constantly against the adjacent face of the container and thus yieldably supports the plate 21 normally with the projection 22 beneath the lower open end of the container and the portion 23 withdrawn from the container.
The articles to be dispensed, indicated at 25, are arranged in superposed position in the containers, with the lowermost article resting on the inturned portion 22. When by force applied to the plate 21 above its pivot 20, against the resistance of the spring tongue 24, the turned over tongue 23 will be pressed against the second article 25 and hold it from moving down in the container, while at the same time the projection 22 will be withdrawn from beneath the lowermost member 25 and permit it to fall from the container.
When the pressure is withdrawn from the plate, the reaction of the spring tongue Will restore the portions 22 and 23 to their former positions and permit the next article 25 to move into position in contact with the portion 2%, ready for the next operation.
The projection 28 is slightly less than the inturned projection 22, so that the portion 22 will be entirely withdrawn from beneath the lowermost article for a short time before the serrations engage the second article. Then as the inward movement of the projection 23 continues, the serrations 25 will engage the second article before it falls from the container.
By this arrangement the dropper device may be so manipulated as to release the articles one at a time, or by compressing the upper part of the dropper for a short distance only or in neutral position or just far enough to withdraw the inturn 22 from beneath the lowermost article and not far enough to cause the serrations to engage the second article, the container is left free to permit all the articles therein to drop out. This ability to discharge the entire contents of the receptacle at one time will be of great advantage under certain circumstances and increases the efficiency and utility of the device.
The member 21 with its reduced portion whereby the cut off portions 22, and 23 and spring tongue 24 are formed will be in one single piece of resilient metal, and will be pressed up by suitable devices, thus very materially reducing the expense and labor.
The top member 18 is detachable to pro-- vide access to the space within the containers and between the spider devices, which may be utilized for storage purposes.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is disclosed in the drawings and set forth in the specification, but it will be understood that modifications Within the scope of the claimed invention may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is l. Ina vending device, a container open at the lower end and with a slot in one face spaced from the open lower end, a. plate of resilient material mounted to swing intermediate the ends and with an offset at one end adaptec to extend partly beneath the lower open end of the container with the opposite end of the plate bent upon itself and part of the bent portion directed laterally to project through the slot and transversely of the container and the remainder of the reduced part extended to form a spring to maintain the plate yieldably in inoperative position.
2. In a vending device, a container open at the lower end and with a slot in one face spaced from the op n lower end, a combined holding and releasing; member formed from a plate of metal having lateral intermediate perforated ears to provide means for swingingly coupling the plate to the container, said plate being bent at right angles thereto at one end to form a lower stop lip and bent upon itself near the other end to form a lateral upper stop lip and with the ren1ainder of the upper bent over portion continued obliquely to the longitudinal axis of the plate to constitute a yieldable tongue adapted to engage the body of the container and yieldably maintain the plate with the lower lip extending into the container and the upper lip \\"li}l'i(lI2I-\V1'l from the slot of the container.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature hereto.
JULIUS GLEBERT BAUMAN.
