Be it known that l, GIUSEPPE CARMELO Lamers., a citizen of the United States of america, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Mechanically-Uperated Chairs or like Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in mechanically operated chairs or similary devices, and is in the nature of an improvement upon the devices disclosed and claimed in my prior Patents Nos. 1,255,821 and 1,255,- 322, issued February 5, 1918.
Although herein disclosed as applied to a barbers chair, the invention is not to be regarded as limited to such particular use., but is equally adapted for application to dental chairs, operating tables, drafts-mens tables, artists easels and other devices involving supports required to be elevate-d and lowered and having parts to be shifted to and maintained in different degrees of inclination.
More specifically stated, the invention inf cludes improvements in operating mechanism of a device of the above described character, whereby the elevating and depressing means may be operated by and the various locking means controlled by a single operating handle.
lt is an important feature of the invention that all parts of the mechanism will always be locked against movement when the controller handle is brought to a normal or neutral' position. By moving `the handle in one direction, parts of the support are released so that they may be moved to different degrees of inclination, whereby the chair may be shifted from an upright to an inclined position, or vice versa.
On movement of the handle in the opposite direction, a lock which normally prevents rotation or elevation of the chair, is released. Further movement of the controller handle in the same direction, and a reciprocation thereof, is effective to operate hydraulic mechanism adapted tot cause the chair to be elevated. Still further movement of the handle beyond the range of reciprocation, for the purpose of elevating, will cause the chair to be lowered.
Improvements in the operating mechanism also include means effective as an aid to the Serial N'o. 450,043.
usual hydraulic elevating means during the raising of the chair, and also effective as buffers or shock absorbers to cushion the chair when lowered.l
Another object of the invention is to provide means for effecting accurate adjustments of the various parts of the mechanism, so that they will be properly coordinated to effect their respective functions in their proper predetermined order, in response to the movements of the controller handlel The invention also includes means to provide for the return of liquid from the plunger surface, and other leakage fluid to the plunger cavity, means for excluding dust and dirt from the liquid reservoir in the plunger, and for concealing unsightly parts of the mechanism and thereby enhancing the appearance of the chair as a whole..

The invention in its preferred form is illustrated as applied to a barbers chair having a seat 2O (Fig. 6) secured to a. support 21 having a plunger 22 (Fig. l), eX- tending downwardly within a cylinder 23 which may be supported by a. suitable base 24.

The back 25, arms 27, levers 30 and toot rest 32 may be shifted from the upright position illustrated in 6, by tilting the back and connected parts to a reclining position, in the usual manne-r. This shifting ot' the inclination of the movable parts o1FY the chair may be controlledby a. lock bar 33 pivotally connected at one end 34 t-o the lever 30, and normally held in `tiXed relation with respect to the chair support by the jaws or" a clamp 35 (Fig.y l) swiveled in said support.
` As a means for controllingthe various parts of the chair-operating mechanism, there is 'provided an opera-ting or controller handle 3 (Figsjl, 3 and '6) carried Y'by a crank arm 37 at one end of a shaitt 38 journaled in the support- 2l. On moving said handle 36 from its neutral position, as indicated in Fig. 3, in a counterclockwise direction, untilthe crank axis lies along the line 0-39,a cam 40 will'be caused to engage-d a 'follower 4l and thereby rotate an arm 42 about a fulcrum bar 43 mounted in the chair support, thus depressing aV link 44 terminating in a threaded socket 45 adj ustably connected with the threaded end 46 or a link 47 pivoted at its end 48 to a crank 49 mounted tast upon the end of a screw 50 (Fig. l), in threaded engagement with a. nut 51 rotatably mounted in the wall ot' the plunger 22. Rotation of this nut. is normally prevented by means of a screw 52 (Figs. l and 7) whichl engages one of a. series of notches or recesses 53 in it-s periphery. A second screw 54 is threaded in the plunger wall in such position that its shank is clear ot the periphery ofsaid nut. The head ot said screw, however, extendsover the surtace'ot' the nut so as to prevent endwise movei'nent thereof. The screw 54 alsovextends within the plunger to a point lying in the patlrl of the crank 49 (see Figs. l and 3), so as to Yform a limiting stop tor said crank.
Housed within a recess 55 in the plunger wall at a` point concentric with the screw 50,
is a bea-ring block 56 (Figs. l, 5, 8 and 9) having a cylindrical outer surface conforming with the inner surface ot the cylinder 23. This bearing block may be. provided with recesses 57 to receive the heads ot the screws 52, 54, by which rotation of the block is prevented.
A spring 58 (Figs. l and 5), having one end secured to the plunger wall by means ot any appropriate fastening sevices 59, engages said bearing block at its other end within a slot or recess GO (Fig. 9) in its face, and normally tends to hold said bloc-k clear of the surface of the cylinder.
A spring 6l (Fig. 3), adjustably connected at one end by means of a screw 62 and nut 63 to a support 64 mounted upon the fulcrum bar 43, has its other end secured to the crank 49 and thereby tends to rotate the screw 5() in ay clockwise direction, as seen in Fig. This clockwise rotation of the screw 50 advances said screw in the nut 5l and thereby thrusts the bearing block 55 into close Contact with the inner surface ot the cylinder 23 and maintains; it in 'rictional contact with suflici'ent torce tol prevent turningor vertical movement of the plunger relatively to the cylinder.
vMovement ot the crank axis to the position O 39, however, as hereinbefore described, causes the screw 50 to be rotated in a conntercloclawise direction, as indicated in Fig. 3, thereby permitting the spring to move the block 56 out ot contact with the cylinder and permit the support and plunger to be either turned with respect to the cylinder 23, or to be moved vertically with respect thereto.
lVhen the crank is moved to the position 0 39 (Fig. 3) for the above-mentioned purpose, the follower 4l is brought into engagement with a notch 65 in the cam 4 0, which normally tends to maintain the handle and crank in the last-mentioned position. On further movement of the controller handle in the same direction, the Jfollower 4l is caused to roll along a continuation 66 ot the high part of the cam 40 which constitutes a dwell suc-h as to maintain the plunger lock released and ineffective during the further n'iovement oi said controller handle tor other purposes hereinafter described.
A rough adjustment ot the controlling means ior the plunger lock may be ei'lective during the assembling ot the device by means of the screw connection 45, 4G. A finer adjustment of the. plunger lock may be effected by first removing the screw 52 and slightly loosening thescrew 54, after which the nut 51 may be rotated to effect the desired adjustment, by bringing any one of the recesses 53 in position to be engaged by the screw )Vlie-n the adjustment has been effected the screw 54 will be tightened and the screw 52 replaced, thereby firmly maintaining -fthe parts in their adjusted positions.
As a means for elevating and depressing the plunger and parts supported thereby, there is provided 2) a` pump piston 67 pivotally connected at 68 to a p tinan 89 having its end in threaded engagement with a socket 70 in a connecting link Tl pivotally connected at 72 to a crank arm T3 extending radially 'from a sleeve made tast to the shaft 38 by means ot a screw or other suitable fastening means 75. Theposition of the piston 67 within the plunger may be adjusted during the assemblingot the mechanism by means of thesc'r'ew connection between the pitnian 69 and the link 7l, and these parts inay be tirinly held in such adjusted position by ine-ans ot' a lock nut 76.
lWhen the controller handle 36 rests in its normal position (illustrated in Fig. 3), the piston 67 (Figs. l and 2) will rest in a normal position in which a 1oy-pass is provided from the part of the plunger cavity below said piston to the part above the saine by means of recesses 7T in the inner' wall or the plunger.

The liquid used for the above-mentioned purpose inay be oil, a. ininture of water and glycerine, or any other liquid suitable lor such purpose.

The. apron 03 may be supported at its upper end by means or the 4bearing ring 98, and may be adjusted and heldL in fixed relation therewith by means of set screws 102 (Fig. 1) inserted from the. inner side ot' said bearing ring and having outwardly di rected ends to'engage recesses 10i-l in the inner surface oi said apron.
The auxiliary cylinders are connected with the lower end olf the main cylinder L3 by conduits 103 (Fig. 2), so that liquid 'forced through the check valve in the litting piston 80 will be eliective upon thel aiuxil iary pistons 9G as well as upon said lifting piston and thereby cause the bearing ring 98 to be moved upwardly in accordance with the. n'ioveinents of the plunger, so as to effect an ,auxiliary upward thrust through the intermediary of the anti-friction bearing 100 to the support.
lt will be obvious that the above-described means o support Jfor the apron. 93 to cause the same to be moved in exact accordance with the vertical movements of the support, will, at the saine time, permit the support to be turned independently of the apron.
'llo provide lfor the return ot any liquid which may be forced about the pistons 90, as well as the liquid which drains back 'from the outer surface ot the plunger 22, to the liquid reservoir within the plunger, there is provided a. groove or channel 104 formed by chamfering the inner, upper edge of the cylinder 23, said channel being connected by passages 105 (Fig. 2) with the upper portions ot the auxiliary cylinders 95. These auxiliary cylinders are in turn connected by openings 106 with recesses 107 in the inner wall of the main cylinder 23, and said recesses 107 may be brought into free communication with the liquid reservoir in said plunger at a certa-in point in the elevation of said plunger by means of a channel 108 in the outer wall of said plunger, which is connected by openings 109 with the recesses 77 in the inner plunger wall.
It will be appa-rent that when the plunger has been elevated to a point such as to bring the channel 108 in communication with the recesses 107, any liquid in the upper portion of the auxiliary cylinders 95, which may have accumulated to a suiiicient extent to overflow the openings 106, will be returned by way ot the recesses 107, channel 108, openings 109 and recesses 77 to the liquid reservoir in the plunger.
Should the operative continue to reciprocate the handle 36 until the support and connected parts are elevated to such an extent as to cause the lower surfaces of the auxiliar f pistons 96 to be carried slightly above the lower portions of the openings 106, a by-pass would thereby be established,
whereby any further liquid forced through the valve 79 to `the lower end oi the cylinder 2?), would be tree to pass through the conduits 103 to the lower ends of the auxiliary cylinders 95, and by way of the openings 106, recesses 107, channels 108, openings 109 and channels T7, to the liquid reservoir in the plunger above 'the piston.
Any further Vliquid pumped into the lower yend o1E the cylinder would thereby be permitted to esc-ape and be returned to the upper portion ot the plunger. and further elevation oiI the support and its connected parts would thus be prevented.
'lhe passages 105 and recesses 107 are relatively narrow compared with the diameter ot the bearing block 50 ot the plunger lock, so that the bearing block will `not enter the passages or recesses, but will bridge over the same and engage relatively larOe portions of the cylinder surface. Moreover, the spring will always hold the bearing block free ot the cylinder surface whenever the plunger lock is rendered ine'i'ective, so that .the edges ot the bearing block will not be brought into engagement with the walls of the passages or channels 105, 107, when the chair is rotated while in its elevated position.
In order to prevent the entrance of dust and dirt to the liquid reservoir, the upper end ot the support may be tightly sealed by means of a gasket 110 and a backing ring 111, as indicated in Fig. 2.
When so constructed, the support is provided with a. valve 112 (F ig. 2) normally held closed by a light spring 113 having one end in engagement with the outer surface ot the support', and the other end in engagement with a cap 114 secured to the end ot the valve stem and forming a dust protector to prevent, so tar as possible, the entrance ot dust when the valve is opened.
As a means whereby the valve 112 will be opened during the lowering of the plunger to permit the escapeinent of air as the liquid is caused to flow back into the liquid reservoir, there is provided a loose-link connect- ion 115, 116, between the valve stein and a crank arm 117 carried by the sleeve 7e, one link of said connection preferably being helical spring, as shown.
On rotation of the shaft 38 and sleeve 74 to unlock the plunger, part ot' the slack in the loose-link connection will be taken up but the valve will not be opened. The slack in the loose-link connection will all be taken up, however, before the handle is moved to the line 0 7 t5 or final pumping posit-ion, after which further movement ot' the handle to its linal plunger lowering position will cause said valve 112 to be. opened and permit air to escape through channels 118 in said valve stein and 119 in said dust cap.
rlhe spring which constitutes the element 116 of the loose-link connection provides for additional movement of the handle to its plunger lowering position, after the valve has been fully opened, and also serves as a means for automatically returning the handle to its 0 7 8 position, and for preventing it from being carried beyond that position, by the weight of the piston, if carelessly left between its 0 39 and 0 7 3 positions. This will prevent the gradual lowering of Ythe piston under the influence of gravity to a sufficient extent to open the slide valve and permit the chair to lower.
As a means adapted to assist the abovedescribed hydraulic mechanism during the raising of the support and to act as shock absorbers to cushion the support, when lowered, there are provided a pair of spring buffers which may preferably be supported from the cylinder 23. As illustrated in Fig. 1, each of these buffers may comprise a spring 120 coiled about a bar 121 mounted for vertical movement `in av spring restraining element 122 herein disclosed as a lug projecting from the outer surface of the cylinder 23. The spring 120 is confined between the spring restraining` element 122 and a head 123 on said bar.
The above-described buffers are so located with respect to the bearing ring 93 that the heads of the bars 121 will be held; in contact with the under surface of said bearing ring. The butter springs are so designed as to be fully compressed with their coils in contact when the support is .in its lowermost position, thereby constituting a limiting stop for said support. During the raising of the support, the upward thrust of the buffer heads upon the bearing ring 98 is transmitted by means of the anti-friction bearing 99, 100, to the support and thereby aids the hydraulic mechanism in lifting the.
saine. During the lowering of the support the springs are gradually compressed, thereby constantly offering greater and greater resistance to the downward movement of the support. so as to serve as shock absorbers to cushion the same at the end of its downward movement.
As the movement of the lock bar 33 which controls the shiftable back and foot rest is one of rotation as well as reciprocation, it is essential that the clamp 35 be swiveled in the support. This clamp, as herein disclosed, comprises a. swiveled clamping inember 124 (Figs. 1 and 4), within which is pivoted at 125 a swinging clamping member 126, having` an inwardly extending projection or boss 127 freely movable in a ollow portion of the member 124. The lock bar 33 passes through a lateral opening 128 in the boss 127, and through oppositely disposed holes in the neighboring walls of the boss enclosing cavity of the clamping member 124, the size and shape of the o ening 128 being such as to provide for a imited angular movement of the clamping member 126 about its `pivotal connection 125. The lock bar 33 is normally held fast by the frictional engagement therewith of oppositely disposed walls of the opening 128y in the clamping member 126 and of the neighboring holes in the clamping member 124. This normal clamping of the lock bar by the members 124, 126, is effected by means of springs 129, each having one end in engagement with the swinging clamping member and the other end in engagement with the head 130 of a support 131 extending rearwardly from the swiveled clamping lnember.
Asa means for releasing the lock bar 33, when desired, the shaft 33 terminates in a screw 132 (Figs. 1 and 4), in threaded engagement with a nut 133 journaled in the swiveled clamp member 124.
A collar 134 in threaded engagement with the nut 133 -cooperates with a flange 135 to prevent undue endwise movement of the swiveled clamping member. The swiveled clamping member 124, nut 133 andcollar 134 may be secured in iiXed relation, each with respect to the other, by means of set screws 136 in threaded engagement with said collar and having' their ends directed towards the swiveled clamping member so so to be adapted to be drawn into firm clamping engagement therewith.
The clamp and its releasing means may be accurately adjusted as follows:
With the set screws 136v withdrawn, the nut 133 may be rotated in a direction to advance the screw 132 to its proper relative position with respect to thehead 137 of a bearing pin mounted in the swinging clamp member. The collar 134may then be rotated into close engagement with the adjoining portion of the support. The clamp screws 136 may then be tightened to effect a direct clamping engagement between the collar of the swiveled clamp member and as a result yof the reactionary forces at the threaded connection between the collar and nut, these parts will all be firmly maintained in fixed relative positions.
The effect of drawing up the clamping Screws 136 after rotating the collar into engaging relation with the adjoining surface of the support, will slightly separate the contacting surfaces between said support and collar, thus providing sufficient play to insure the free rotation of the swiveled bearing member.
A hole 128 in the clamping member 126, which serves as an oil hole and also as a passageway through which a tool may be inserted to remove the bearing pin 137, may be normally closed by a screw plug, as shown in Fig. 1.
To facilitate the adjustment of the clamp and its releasing means, the nut 1.33 and collar 134may be provided with holes or recesses 138,139 (Fig. 4) to receive a spanner vvrenchor other suitable tool.
Then it is desired to free the .lock bar 33 =so as to shift the chair from its upright to its reclined position, or vice versa, the handle 36 is moved in a clockwise direction (Fig. 3),l to cause the crank axis 3'? to coincide with the line 0-140. This movement of the handle will cause the screw 132 to 'engage and move the swinging clamp member 126 against the opposing influence of the springs 129, and thereby' release the lock bar. The movement of the swinging' clamp member 126 may be limited, if desired, by an adjustable stop 140 (Fig. 1), which may also serve as a limiting stop for the movement of the controller handle in its chair clamp releasing direction. On return of the handle 36 to its normal position, clamp member 126 wi-ll be againrestored by the springs 129 to its normal position, thus causing the lock harto be again engaged and held-fast between parts of the members 124, 126.
In order that the shaft 38 may be free to move in an axial (direction, as the screw 132 is ladvanced and withdrawn in the nut 133 vto operatefthe lock bar clamp, without obstruction by or interference with the operating connections,between'said shaft and other parts of the mechanism, the link 71 is connected to the crank arm 73 by means of lugs spaced somewhat wider than the thickness of said crank arm to provide a clearance space, and the cam- 40 is made wider than the follower 41, as best indicated in Figs. 1 and 4.
As a means normally tending to hold the controller handle 3G in its normal position, illustrated in Fig. 3, there is provided a sleeve 141 (Figs. 1 and 4) slidably mounted upon the shaft 38 and having lugs 142 adapted to move in axial direction along;` lsaid shaft between lugs 143 projecting from the inner surface of the support, the -said interengaging lugs preventing rotation of the sleeve 141'. A spring 144, having its ends confined between one end of the sleeve 141 and the inner surface of the support, normally tends to move -said sleeve toward the left and thereby cause angular projections or noses 145 (Fig. 4), projecting from the sleeve'74 fixed to said shaft 38 to be held in vengagement -with recesses or notches 146 in said sleeve 141.v
The means last described will normally tend to v'hold the handle 3G 'in its neutral position,A but,|=on forcibly turning said handle. the nose 145, cooperating with the inclined surfaces leading into-the notches 146, will cause the sleeve 141 to be thrust towards the right and permit further movement of the controller handle and parts operated thereby.
Iti'is believedthat the operation of the mechanism as a whole willbe apparenti-in Aview of the explanation given in connection with the description of its construction. Normally, the controller handle stands in its neutral position and all parts of the mechanism are locked. 1f it is desired to merely turn or rotate the chair, the controller handle is moved slightly in a. counterclockwise direction (Fig. 3), as a result of 'which the plunger lock will be released and rotationv may be effect-ed.
The release of this lock also permits the chair to be elevated. lf, therefore, it is do sired to elevate the chair, the controller handiel is moved some\,\'luit further in a countercloekwise direction (Fig. 3) and reciprocated to operate the pump piston 67. During this raising operation, the auxiliary pistons 9b cooperate withthe lifting piston 8O to lift the cha-ir, the apron 93 being correspindingly elevated. This operation is assited by the buffer springs 120.
When the desired elevation has been at tained, the handle may be moved back tto its normal position and the plungerI lock will again be rendered effective.
lf it is desired to move the shiftable parts of the chair to their reclining positions, the controller' handle isV moved in a clockwise direction (F 3), as a result of whichthe clamp 35 will release the lock-bar and permit the parts of the chair to be adjusted. @n rotation of the controller handle back to its neutral position, the clamp willagain be rendered effective.
`When `it is desired to lower the chair, the controller handle is again moved in a coun` tin'clockwise direction to the limit of its movement, as a` result of which the liquid below the pistons willbe pern'iitted to flow back into the liquid reservoir and the chair permitted to move downwardly until brought to rest by the buffer springs 120.
From the foregoing` description, it will be seen that the lock bar clamp, which normally prevents movement of the shiftable parts of the chair, and the plunger lock, which normally prevents the turning, elevating or lowering of the chair, are both automatically rendered effective whenever the controller handle is moved to its neutral position. @n moving the controller 'handle in one direction from its neutral position, to advance the screw 132, and thereby release the lock bar clamp, the cam 40 is moved away from the follower 4l, and the plunger lock is not affected. 0n moving the handle in the opposite direction from its neutral position, to cause the cam 40 to engage the follower 41 and cause the plunger to be unlocked, the screw 132 is withdrawn from the clamping member 126, so that the lock bar is not unlocked. 1n other words, each lock may be independently rendered inelfective by mow ing the handle in one direction or the other and each will be again rendered ellective on returning the handle to its neutral position.
During the movements ot the controller handle between the lines @-439 and O-llh to operate the locking mechanisms, the pump piston GT will be. moved; but, because ot the by-piass formed by the recess 77, no liquid will be forced through the valve T9 and the plunger 22 will not be elevated.
lWhen the controller' handle is moved beyond the line @-39 and reciprocated between t'he lines O- 39 imdb-78, to elevate the support, and when the handle is moved still farther, to the line O 84, to permit the chair to lower, the cani follower 4l is caused to ride on the dwell 66, and thereby maintain the plunger locl; ineffective so that the plunger is tree to move in the cylinder 23.
The lost motion connection between the link 7l and the arm 73 (seel Figs. l and 4;), and the excess width of the cam 40, permits lt'he necessary axial movement of the shaft 38 as the screw 132 is advanced and withdrawn relatively to the nut 133, without interference with or obstruction by other parts of the mechanism.
rlhe various parts ot the above-described device are coordinated into one unitary structure, which may be controlled by simple movements of a single controller handle, and may therefore be easily operated by a novice, yet the component parts are all independently adjustable, each with respect to the other, to compensate for wear, so that each may always be causedto perform its function at the proper position of the controller handle. y
, Although the invention has been herein disclosed as applied to a barbers chair, it is to be understood that it is in no manner limited to such particular application, and that changes and modications may bel made within the scope of the appended claims.
vWhat I claim is:
l. In a device ot the character described, the combination with a base and a support journaled therein and having shiftable parts adapted to be adjusted to different degrees ot inclination, of mechanism tor adjusting said support vertically, locking means 'for preventing change of inclination of said shittable parts, a second locking means to prevent turning and vertical movements ot said support, each of said locking means including` automatic holding means normally maintaining its respective locking means effective as a lock, and means for releasing said locking means and for operating said adjusting means comprising a controller handle movable in opposite directions trom and returnable to a normal neutral position, means operated by said handle when moved in one direction from said neutral position for releasing said first mentioned locking means, means operated by said handle when moved in the opposite direction vtrom said neutral position for releasing said second mentioned locking means, by etecting a movement ot its parts in opposition to t-he effort of its holding means, means controlled by said handle for maintaining` said second mentioned locking means released against the pressure ot' its holding means during further movement ot said handle in the last mentioned direction, and a connection between said handle and said vertical adjusting mechanism whereby, after such tui-ther movement of said handle, said mechanism may be operated thereby to edect the vertical adjustment ot said support, said handle and the parts connected therewith, when in their normal neutral positions, being tree from and independent of said locking means.
2. In a device or the character described, in combination, a base, a support, hydraulic operating means for elevating` and depressing said support relatively to said base, a bearing ring, an anti-friction bearing between said ring and support, and means, comprising a buffer spring, normally held compressed between said base and bearing ring, eiiective as an aid to said operating` means during the elevation ot said supportand serving as a shoclrabsorber and limiting` stop during the depression thereof.
3. In a device of the character described, in combination, a base, a support, operating` means for elevating and depressing said support relatively to said base, a bearing ring, means for elevating and depressing Said bearing ring` in accordance with the vertical movements of said support, an antifriction bearing between said bearing ring and said support, and means, comprising a buffer spring, normally held compressed between said base and bearing` ring, eiiective as an aid to said operating means during the elevation ot said support, and serving as a shock absorber and limiting stop during the depression thereof. v
4. In a device of the charac-ter described, in. combination, a base, a support, a cylinder extending upwardly from said base, a plunger extending downwardly from said support, said plunger lcomprising a piston vertically and rotatably adjustable in said cylinder, an apron vertically movable with said support and adapted to surround and conceal the portion ot said plunger exposed above said cylinder, said support being` rotatable with respect to said apron, operating means in cooperative relation with said cylinder and piston tor elevating and depressing said support and apron with respect to said base, and means tor preventing` rotation of' said apron whereby said support may be rotated independently ot said base and apron.

In a device of the character described, in combination, ay base, a support, a cylinder extending upwardly from said base, a plunger' extending downwardly from said support into said cylinderto torni a piston, means tor forcing-liquid into said cylinder beneath said piston to elevate said support, means whereby the liquid may be allowed to escape and permit said support to lower, an apron to surround and conceal the portion of said plunger exposed above said cylinder, and means independent of said plunger for elevating and lowering said apron in accordance with the corresponding movements oi said support, said support being adapted to turn about a vertical axis with respect to said base and apron.

said main and auxiliary cylinders being connected bene-ath said piston whereby said bearing ring will be caused to cooperate with said plunger as ameans for elevating said support, and constitute means for raising and lowering said apron in accordance with the corresponding movements of said support, but preventing rotation therewith.

In a device of the character described, in combination, a base, a support, a cylinde-r `extending upwardly from said base, a hollow plunger extending downwardly from said support into said cylinder to forni a lifting' piston, means including a pump piston vertically movable in said plunger whereby liquid may be forced from-.said plunger into the portion of said cylinder beneath said lifting p'ston and thereby caused to elevate said support, and means for lowering said supportcomprising a slide valve in said lifting piston, a bell crank lever having one arm in the path of movement of a part of said pump piston and another arm movable into engagement with a. part of said slide valve, whereby on depressing said pump piston below the range of its normal pumping stroke, it will rock said bell crank lever and slide said valve, and a stop carried by said plunger to limit the downward movement of said pumping' piston and thereby prevent abnormal movement of the parts of said slide valve.

In a device of the character described, in combination, a base, a support, a main cylinder extending upwardly from said base, a hollow plunger extending downwardly from said support into said cylinder to form a lifting piston, means, including a pump piston in said plunger', for forcing liquid from said plunger into the portion of 4said cylinder beneath said lifting piston to elevate said support, means whereby the liquid may be allowed to flow back into said plunger to permit said support to lower, a plurality of auxiliary cylinders extending upwardly from said base, an auxiliary lifting piston in each of said auxiliary cylinders, said main and auxiliary cylinders being interconnected beneath said pistons whereby all of said pistons may be concomitantly elevated and depressed by the control of said liquid, a. groove or channel at the top of said main cylinder formed by chamfering its .inner upper edge surrounding said plunger, connections from said channel to the upper portions of said auxiliarly cylinders, counections between the upper po-itions of said auxiliary cylinders and the inner walls of said main cylinder, and intercoimec-ted recesses in, the outer and inner walls of said plunger near its lower end whereby, on elevating' said plunger to a predetermined height, a connection will be established between said auxiliary cylinders and said plunger cavity to permit accumulations of liquid above the pistons in said auxiliary cylinders to flow back into the plunger cavity.

In a. device of the character described, in combination, a base, ay hollow support, a cylinder projecting upwardly from said base., a hollow plunger projecting downwai-diy from said support into said cylinder to form a lifting piston, a check valve in said lifting piston, a pump piston in said plunger, operating mechanism in said support and plunger by which said piston may be reciprocated to force liquid from said plunger, through said valve, into the portion of said cylinder beneath said lifting piston, thereby elevating said support, means controlled by a movement of said piston beyond the range of its pumping reciprocation, for allowing said liquid to flow back into said plunger, to permit said support to lower, the hollow support and the portion of said plunger abo-vc said pump piston normally forming an air tight chamber, an escape valve normally preventing the escape of air from said chamber, and a loose link connection between said operating mechanism and said escape valve, whereby said operating mechanism may be caused to reciprocate said pumping piston to elevate said support without opening said escape valve, but on further operation to move said piston to its support lowering position, the slack in said loose link valve connection will be taken up' and said connection rendered effective to open said escape valve and permit air to escape as the liquid flows b-ack into said plunger.

A device of the character defined in claim 13, having a light spring normally holding the esca-pe valve closed, and in which one element of the loose link valve connection is a spring of sufficient strength to overcome said valve spring and open said valve, said spring link affording means whereby a further movement of the operating` means may be effected without furthe-r effect on said valve.

In a device of the character described, the combination with a cylinder and a plunger rotatably mounted therein, of means for locking said plunger in said cylinder, said locking means con'iprising a bearing block housed in a. recess in the outer surface of the plunger wall having a face to engage the inner face of said cylinder, a. nut journaled in said plunger wall behind said bearing block, a screw in threaded engagement with said nut, said nut being adapted to adjust the position of said screw with respect to said block, means for securing said nut to said plunger in its respective positions of adjustment, and means for turning said screw to locking and unlocking position.

In a device of the character described, a support having a part shiftable. to different degrees of inclination, a lock bar connected to said shiftable part, a clamp for said bar comprising a mounting block and a cooperating clamping member, a flange on said block preventing endwise movement thereof in one direction, a nut journaled in said block, a collar on said nut, said collar preventing movement of said block in the opposite direction, resilient means normally holding said clamping member in clamped relation with said bar, means comprising a screw in threaded engagement with said nut whereby said clamping member may be' moved to :tree said bar, said nut comprising means for adjusting the position of said screw relative to said clamping member, and means for clamping said nut and collar in fixed relation with said mounting block, thereby maintaining the adjustment of said screw.

a support having a part shiftable to diierent degrees of inclination, a lock bar connected to said shiftable part, a clamp for said bar comprising a flanged block swiveled in said support and a cooperating clamping member movably mounted therein, a nut journaled in said block, a collar having a threaded connection with said nut whereby it may be adjusted to a position relative to said flanged block such as to prevent material endwise movement without prevent-ing rotation, resilient means nor- L mally holding said clamp-ing member in clamped relation with said bar, means comprising a rock-shaft having its end threaded in said nut whereby said clamping member may be moved to tree said bar, said nut comprising means for adjusting the endwise position of said roch-shaft relative to said clamping member, and means for clamping said nut, collar, and block in iixed relation to preserve the adjustment of said
