FILNG-APPLIANCE CASE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, YVTLLIAM E. DUN- NING and JACOB BAcHornN, citizens of the United States, residing at Alliance.y in the county of Stark and State of 0hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing-Appliance Cases, of which the following is a specification.

The invent-ion relates to a filing appliance for sales bills and other similar papers, in which a series of hinged holder frames or leaves may be operatively mounted upon a supporting elevator frame carried in a. fireproof case having a rectangular box base into which the frame and superposed holders may be lowered and a. lid for enclosing the same when not in use.

In the preferred normal position of such a bank or series of hinged bill holders, the same are by preference normally mounted and maintained in upright or vertical position when not in use, and a general object of the improvement is to operatively mount the bank of holders upon an elevator supporting frame carried in the box body of the case, in such a. manner that the bank of holders may be raised and operatively supported at the open top of the case and can also be lowered and enclosed in the case, in normal upright position.

A preferred form of the improvement is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is an elevation section of the case with the lid closed, showing in side elevation the filing appliance lowered and enclosed therein;

The case for the filing appliance may comprise aA box body 22 open at the top, a lid 23 hinged at 24 to the rea-r rim of the body and provided with a combination lock 25 and a handle bar 26 along the forward edge, by mea-ns of which handle the lid may be readily raised and lowered.

The elevator supporting frame 2i is provided with a plurality of guide rollers 28 extending laterally from each side, which are adapted to operate in guide ways 29 and 29 provided therefor on the inner side of the side walls of the body of the case; two guide rolls spaced one above the other being preferably provided near the rear end of the elevator frame, and a. third side roll being preferably spaced a substantial distance forward therefrom, so as to give triangular points of support for holding the elevator frame from tilting.

Supporting links 30 are provided on each side of the elevator frame, the upper ends of which are preferably connected with brackets as 3l secured to the underside of the lid, and the lower ends of which are provided with elongated slots 32 in which are slidably engaged supporting pins 33 extending laterally from the sides of the elevator frame. The lower ends of these slots form bearings for the pins for bodily raising and carrying the elevator fra-me when the lid is opened to the upright position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and the pins may slide in the slots to permit the links to move downward when the lid is finally closed after the elevator carriage rests upon the bottom of the case, as shown in Fig. 1.

The weight of the lid, the elevator carriage and the bank of holders superposed thereon, is preferably sustained or counterbalanced at least in part, by a pair of coiled compression springs 34 in each side of the case; the springs being located around telescoping tubes 35 and rods 36. The lower ends of the telescoping tubes are secured to across head 37 pivot-ally connected to a bearing bracket 38 in the forward corner of the bottom of the case; and the upper ends of the telescoping rods are secured to a cross head 39 pivotally connected to a bearingr bracket 40 on the under side of the lid; from which upper cross head 39 mayl depend a shield 4l extending' around the` outer sides of the springs and rods, and having a band 42 on its lower end extending' around the innei` side thereof, all in well known manner.

Lid supporting links 43 are provided in the sides of the caser` and the same ma)7 have their upper ends pivotally connected to the bearing brackets 4() on the under sidel of the lid. These links are provided with longitudinal slots 44 throughout the greater portion of their length, which slidablyY engage supporting' posts 45 extending inward fro-1n the sides of the body of the case. The slots 44 are curved abruptly forward at their lower ends so as to form shoulders 46., adapted to rest and bear upon the supporting' posts when the lid is fullv opened into upright position, as shown in Figs, 3 and 4; in which position the lid ma;7 lean slightly rearward. as illustrated in the drawings.

The lid supporting links normallv swing' rearward by gravity. so that their shoulders 46 will bear upon the supporting pins 411 and when it is desired to lower the lidR both links may be swung' forward in unison to disengage the shoulder from the pins, by means of a releasing' lever 47 secured to the end of a rock shaft 48 extendingl transversely through the supporting' frame and having' a crank arm. 49 on each end wit-h a crank pin 50 thereon extending' inward in rear of the lower end of the corresponding' link` so that a. forward movement of the releasing' lever moves the lower ends of the links forward. thereby disengagino' the bearing' shoulders from the supportinrY pinions and pern'iittinp' the pins to slide in the slots as the links. move downward with the lid.

The releasingF lever 47 mav be normalla,Y held rearward liv a. coiled expansion spring' 51 connectingv it with the elevator frame. and it is preferred to provide a` stop tinn'er 52 extending' inward in the path of a stop finger 53 extending; inward and downward from one side of the bill holder carriage frame 54: so that the releasing' lever is positivelv stopped from operation when the bank of bill holders is pushed rearward upon the carriaee into opera-tive position. as presentlv to be described.

The carriage frame 54 is provided with traction wheels 55 which bear and travel upon horizontal track ledges 56 provided in each side of the horizontal frame underneath Ie'uide bars 57 overhangino' the wheels and forming guide wavs in which the wheels operate forward and rearward.

The rearward movement of the carriage frame 54 is limited and stopped by the upright back flange 58 extending' across the rear end of the frame, and the carriage automatically locked in this position by a spring latch 59 having' a beveled faced hook GO for springing downward to pass under the forward end of the frame and then spring upward to engage the same when moved to its rearmost position, as shown in Fig. 4.

Ait the forward end of its movement, the forward traction wheels ride upward upon the inclined rear end of the blocks 6l on the forward end of the track ledges 5G, in the forward ends of whirh blocks are provider semi-circular recesses 32 for receiving: the wheels and holding' them against movement in either direction. unlessI the frame is lifted upward so as to release the wheels from the recesses.

The hlinev appliance per se may include a bank or continuons series of bill holder franies or leaves G9 32 and 63, which are all hinged together at their lower ends by means of interene'asinpj hinge ears 64 and pintlcs G5. so that their' upper ends ina); swing freely,Y to and from each other; and in front. of the foremost holder G3 ma;7 be provided ai table leaf 6d which is likewise hinged to the lower end of the foremost helder so that it may7 swing freely to and from tho upper end of the same.

All the bill holders are made exactly alike. with recesses G7 and spring' clips G8 in each face for reeeiif'ine; and clamping' sales bills or the like in well known manner; but for operating' purposes. according to the present improvement, thev niav be desribed comprising' three several sections or series. which inav include some six holders 63 in the forward sectionq some eight holders 63 in the intermediate sectionn and some. nine holders (13 in the rearward section,

`When the filing' appliance is not in use. and it is desired to lower the bank of bill holders into the well formed by the box body Ll O of the case, for iire or burglar protection, the holders and the table leaf are all swung into normal upright position, as shown in Fig. 4; after which the spring latch 59 is disengaged from the forward edge of the carriage frame, and the same with the bank of holders thereon are moved forward until the forward set of traction wheels 55 ride upon and enter the recesses in the block 61, during which movement the traction rolls 82 on the lower corners of the table leaf, ride upon the auxiliary tracks 79 so as to hold the table leaf and the leaves of the forward section in normal upright position. as shown in Fig. 3.

It will be understood that the rearward or operating position of the bank of holders as shown in Fig. 4L is necessary or desirable to prevent the table leaf and the holders superposed thereon from overhanging the forward end of the elevator supporting frame too far for proper support; and that the forward shifting or movement of the same, shown in Fig. 3, is desirable or necessary to prevent the lid from striking the upper ends of the rearmost holders before they are lowered far enough into the case to avoid the same, when the. parts are made and arranged in the most desirable proportions for convenient use.

After moving the bank of holders forward, into the position shown in Fig. 3. the releasing lever 47 may be swung forward to disengage the lid supporting links 43 from the supporting pins 45, whereupon the weight of the elevator frame and the bank of leaves thereon, assisted if need be by a forward pull upon the lid handle 26. serves to overcome the action of the counterbalance springs 34, and the carriage with the holders thereon is bodily lowered into the box body of the case, being guided therein by the movement of the guide rolls 28 in the guide ways 29 and 29.

The downward movement continues until the elevator` frame rests upon the bottom of the case, after which the lid is finally closed by the sliding of the supporting pins 33 in the slots of the supporting links 30; which final closing movement of the lid is against the full force of the compression springs 34, and compresses the same so that their energy is useful in the initial movement of raising the lid when the same is again opened for elevating the bank of holders into position for use.

The improvements in filing appliances per se` which is illustrated and brieflv described, but not claimed herein, is made the subject of another application for Letters Patent filed herewith` Serial No. 651.815.

Vile claim:

1. A case for a filing appliance or the like including a boX base open at the top and having upright guide ways therein, an elevator frame in the case having guides thereon operating in the guide ways, a cover lid on the case hinged to the rear rim thereof, supporting links depending` from the lid fo-r holding it in upright position upon the oase, and supporting links between the lid and t-he elevator frame for raising and lowering the same by the opening and closing of the lid.

2. A case for a filing appliance or the like including` a box base open at the top and having upright guide ways therein, an elevator frame in the case having guides thereon operating' in the guide ways, a cover lid on the case hinged to the rear rim thereof, springs acting to open the lid upward from the case, supporting links depending from the lid for holding it in upright position upon the case, and supporting links between the lid and the elevator frame for raising and lowering the same by the opening and closing of the lid.

3. A case for a filing yappliance or the like including a box base open at the top having upright guide ways and supporting pins therein, an elevator frame in the case having guides thereon operating in the guide ways, a cover lid on the case hinged to the rear rim thereof, supporting links depending from the lid and releasably engaging the supporting pins for supporting the lid in upright position thereon, means for disengaging the lid supporting links from the supporting pins, and supporting links between the lid and the elevator frame for raising and lowering the same by the opening and closing of the lid.

A case for a filing appliance or the like, including a box base open at the top, an elevator frame operatively mounted in the case, a cover lid on the case hinged to the rear rim thereof, means for holding the lid in upright position upon the case, and supporting links connecting the lid and elevator frame for bodily raising and lowering lthe same by the opening and closing of the 5. 7. A filing appliance including a case open at the top and having upright guide ways therein, an elevator frame in the case having guides thereon operating in the guide ways, a series of holders operatively supported by the frame, a cover lid on the case hinged to the rear rim thereof, springs acting to open the lid upward from the case, supporting links depending from the lid to hold it in upright position upon the case, and supporting links between the lid and the elevator frame for raising and lowering the same by the opening and closing of the lid.

8. A filing appliance including a case open at the top and having upright guide ways therein, an elevator frame in the case having guides thereon operating in the guide Ways, a series of holders operatively supported by the frame, a cover lid on the case hinged to the rear rim thereof, supporting links depending from the lid to hold it in upright position upon the case, and supporting links depending from the lid and having a slotted connection with the elevator frame for raising and lowering the Same by the raising and lowering of the lid.

9. A filing appliance including a case open at the top, an elevator frame therein, a series of normally upright holders operatively supported by the frame, a. cover lid on the case hinged to the rear rim thereof, connections between the lid and the elevator frame for raising' and lowering the same by the opening and closing of the lid, and releasable means for holding the lid in upright position.

A tiling appliance including a case open at the top, an elevator frame therein, a carriage movable forward `and rearward on the frame, a series of normally upright holders operatively mounted on the carriage, a cover lid on the case hinged to the rear rim thereof vand connections between the lid and the elevator frame for raising and lowering the same by the opening and closing of the lid.
