IMPROVEMENT IN THATCHED ROOFS.

Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 152,478, dated June 30. 1874; application filed May 9, 1874.

To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that l, FREDERICK GEIEE, ot Alice, in the county of Grundy and State ot' Iowa, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Thatched Roofs; and Ido hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part ot' this specification, and to the letters and iigures of reference marked thereon.

l Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a top view of my root', and Fig. 2 is a bottom view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 4 is a transverse section.

This invention has relation to thatched roofs; and it consists in securing the wisps oteorn-shucks or other material to the roofframe by means ot' wire loops and wedges, in such manner that the wisps can be readily tightened should they, fiom any cause, become loose, as will be hereinafter explained.

In the annexed drawings, A A designate roof-beams, which, with cross-bars a a secured to them, constitute the frame of the roof. The cross-bars a al are arranged at suitable distances apart, each pair having a narrow space between them suttieiently wide to allow the free passage of wires b. B B designate the wisps, which may be ot' any suitable substance-such as corn-shueks, straw, and the like-and which are gathered closely together at their ends, and bound down upon the crossbars a a with the wires I), commencing at the lower edge ot' the root', and building upward, layer after laye", in courses extending crosswise ot the root'. rIhe wiring is done by passing it, in loops, c, alternately over each wisp and under a wedge, g. Between the wedges g and the cross-bars are inserted transversely bits of wood, lz. It' desired, a less number ot' wedges may be used, so that every other bottom loop, or every two or three bottom loops, may be provided with a bit otvwood only.

A thatched root' thus constructed can be very easily repaired, and the wisps can be tightened by. simply driving the wedges g.

W hat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A thatched root' the wisps B of which are secured to cross-bars a a by means of wire loops c, in combination with holding and tightening wedges g, substantially as described.
