Be it known that I, FRANK E. HATCH, a citizenzof the Uni-ted t-States, and a'resident of Rutherford,inthe county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvement-s in Box-Govering Machines, of which the following .is a specification.
This invention relates to box coveringmachin'ery and particularly to machinery for covering the sides of paper boxes with gummed paper strip fromrolls ofthe same.
The main obj ectof the invention isto provide improved 'means for Wrapping the gummed paper strip around the sides of the box body and properly securing it to all parts thereof. Another object is to-provide improved means-for turning over and securing one of the side edges of-the gummed paper strip and attaching it to the-bottom edgesof the box, and awthird object is to provide improved means for turning over and attaching the other side edge ofssaid strip to the inside of the top edges of the box. Still another-object is to-provideimproved'mean-s to form neat folds of said strip edges at the bottom corners oft'hebox. shaft 23 are two members 25, 26, which act shaft 23 passes, and a set screw in the lug 28 which secures the lug and plate to the said shaft 23. Also mounted on the shaft 23 is an arm 32 having a hub 33, by means of which it is journaled on an extension or sleeve 34 of the lug 28, and it is held in position laterally by the collar 35. The arm 32 has a hub at its outer end in which is journaled a rod 36 secured to the member 37. A spring 50 connects to a flexible member 501 secured to the hub 33 and causes the arm 32 to press the member 37 downward. The member 37 is of rightangled cross-section and has two flat bearing surfaces 38 and 39, each of which is curved at the front toward the supply portion of the machine, so as to readily pass over the sides and bottom of the box. The curved part designated by 40 and which precedes the surface 38, folds down and attaches all the portions of the edge of the paper strip which have not been acted upon by another member hereinafter to be described.
The member 25 has a plate 41, curved at the forward part, and a lug 42 by means of which it is secured to the shaft 23 by a screw 43. On the lug 42 is a bifurcated oscillating member 44, having a roll 45 at the top, and a member 46 secured to one side. The member 46 has curved lips 47, a groove 49, and a curved or warped surface 48 adjacent to said groove. A spring 51 around the pivot screw normally presses the member 44 and roll 45 towards a relatively stationary cam member 52, and hung on the shaft 10 above the roll 45 is a movable by-pass member 53 for a purpose hereinafter to be explained.
On the forward part of the plate 27 is a lug 55, and a link 56 is hinged thereto, and at its other end also to one arm of an adjustable bell-crank 57 ournaled on the shaft 10. A wiper 58 is secured to the outer part of the other and longer arm 59 of the bellcrank 57 and is adapted to be moved to-and fro or oscillated by means of the link 56 which is actuated by the movement of the plate 27 following the rotation of the box. The wiper 58 has a beveled edge 58 and also has a stem 60 by which it is held in a suitable bearing 61 in the arm 59, and has a spring 62, so that it shall be slightly yielding when brought into action.
Journaled on the shaft 23 is an arm 65, having a stud 66 at the end thereof. A triangular member 67 is journaled at the end of said stud so as to freely turn thereon, and a coil spring 68 presses the triangular member 67 inwards towards the box edge so that its flange 69 comes against said edge. An arm 70 is also journaled on the shaft 23 and is connected to the arm 60 through the medium of a spiral spring 71 surroui'iding the shaft and secured respectively to the hub of the arm 65 and to a pin 72 in the arm 70. Journaled to a stud 75 in the end of the arm 70 is a member 76 which is adapted to slide over the outer portions of the top edges of the box and prevent the said edges from being pushed outward by the member 67.
The operation of my improved box covering machine is as follows:
When the arms 7 and frame 11 are raised, a box is placed in position on the form 3, and the end of the paper strip 5, which has just passed through the usual gumming means and around the guide rolls m, 7), is pulled along and attached to the side of the box that is uppermost.
The frame 11 and arms 7 are now let down so that the roll 21, and members 25, 26, rest on the end of the paper strip on the box. The box 2, form 3, and shaft 4 are now allowed to make a revolution, and the paper strip is pressed onto the side of the box by means of the roll 21, together with the double member 25, 26, and the edge-turning mechanisms are positioned thereon, principally by the double wiper 25, 26.
The edge of the strip at the top of the box is turned over by the member 46, of which the curved lips 47 act first, then the curved or warped surface 48 turns the paper, and then the groove 49 acts thereon. These various portions turn over the strip edge into a U-form which is pressed onto the top edges of the box. The flat surfaces 64 of the triangular member 67 press the lower part of the U against the inside of the top edges of the box, and the points 73 pass into and press home the insides of the corners as they successivelv come to said member. The member 76 presses down on the outer side of the top edges and prevents them from being sprung outward by the corner presser.
The member 46 is oscillated outward at each corner of the box and moved back into folding position again on passing the corner, by the riding of the roll 45 on the cam 52. held thereon by the pressure of the spring 51, after which it rides. in the reverse direction over the left hand face of the bypass member 53, and on reaching the edge ion '80 thereof, 'moves "suddenly back toward the cam. The last =movement causes 'the member e6 to be brought back to its folding position and very close to the corner of the box. These operations occur at each corner.
At the bottom edges of the box 'the wiper 58 is caused to move downwardjust before the corner of the box passes. The downw'ard oscillation of this member brings the beveled edge -58"against the paper strip edge and folds down a portion thereof before the corner and causes it to adhere by its egum'med surface to the bottom edgesof the box. The beveled edge '58 starts a beveled fold next'to the corner. The member 58 is immediately raised and the-corner passes by. The member 37 slides continuously over thestrip edge and folcsdown and attaches the portions not touched by the wiper 58, and also passes over those parts folded-bythe member 58, and finishes the beveled fold atthe 'corners-tdthe form illustrated in Figs. 3 and '9. The fini'shed box is removed by pulling back the member 67 and raising the arms 7 and frame 1-1.
In order to maintain the box closely against the box form at all times "during the wrapping operation, I have provided a member to press on the bottom of the box at a point a little distance from the edge of'the bottom, Preferal'ily said-member is a rollsuch as 85,- in a bracketSG-secured to the adjacent side plate of the frame 11. p
The two paper-strjip-e-dge-turning mechanisms are adapted for nse'o'n a. greatnumber of ditlerent'sizes of boxes without any readjustment except for width. This is due to the 'fact that the said mechanisms are always correctly spaced with relation to the box edges and corners, by the frame -11, roll 21, and wipers 25, 26.
It is evident that the mere mechanismfor giving the movements to the various parts of'the above'described mechanism can "be varied and any suitable forms ofiparts may be employed without departing from the spirit and principle of my invention and I donot therefore confine myself to the details of construction here" shown.
That I claim is 1. The combination with mechanism for supplying gummed paper strip,=of means for wrapping said strip around the sides of a box which means include a pivoted frame, and two members one after the other, mounted on and movable with the frame and adapted to press thepaper strip onto the box sides. 4 1 I 2. The combination with mechanism for supplying gummed paper strip, of'means for wrapping said strip around the sidesof a box which means include a pivoted frame, a member on saidframe forward of and below the pivot, and second member in the rear ofand "below said pivot, both of which members are adapted to ipress the paper strip 'ontothe sides of the box.

The combination with a box-holding form and 'means for wrapping-a gumm'ed paper strip around the-sides of a box thereon, of means for turning over one of the side edges of said strip andattaching it to the adjacent edges which -means are under controlof a member movable in parallelism so the-sides ofthe box form.
7. The combination with means for wrapping aeg'iunmedpaperstrip around the sides of a box, of'means for turning-over one of the side' edges of said strip which. include a member which bears on thesid'es 'of the box during the wrapping operation and controls the position and influences the movements of said edge-turning means.
8.- The combination with means for wrapping aVgum-med, paper strip around the S1659 complete-the turning over and-attachingof I said strip ialong theaemammgportions of the bottom edges of the box. 1
9. The combination with box-holdingmeans, means for rotating the -same, and
means cooperating therewith for wrapping lil't) a gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of means for turning over and attaching the edge of said strip along the bottom edges of the box which include a to-and-fromoving member to fold and attach the portions preceding the corners, and a member to operate continuously along said edges after the to-and-fro-moving member.
10. The combination with box-holding means, means for rotating the same and means cooperating therewith for wrapping a gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of means for turning over and attaching one edge of said strip along the bottom edges of the box which include an oscillating member which folds the portions preceding the corners, and a sliding member which acts continuously on said edges after the operation of the oscillating member.
11. The combination with means for wrapping a gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of means for turning over one edge of said strip and attaching it to the bottom edges of the box which include a wiper having a curved forward part and a flat rear part.
12. The combination with means for wrappinga gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of means for turning over one of the side edges of said strip and attaching it to the bottom edges of the box which include a wiper having a curved forward part and a flat after part, and a pivot ed arm for supporting said wiper.
13. In a box covering machine, in combination, a pivoted frame, a member at the forward part of the frame below its pivotal axis to press on the sides of a box, a second bearing member in the frame back of and below the pivotal axis, a wiper to act before each bottom corner, an arm pivoted on the frame, and a. wiper held by said arm against the bottom edges of the box for effecting the final turning down and attaching of the edge of a paper strip wrapped about the box, means to hold the frame against the box, and means to cause relative movement between the box and frame.

The combination with means for wrapping a. gummed paper strip around the sides of a box of means for turning over one edge of said strip and attaching it to the inside of the top edges of the box which include a member having a surface which acts in said turning and means to withdraw said turning member at each corner of the box.
15. The combination with means for wrapping a gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of means for turning over one edge of said strip and attaching it to the inside of the top edges of the box which include a member having a warped surface and a groove adjacent thereto to act jointly on said strip edge in turning over and attaching the same, and means to withdraw said edge-turning member at the corners of the box.
16. The combination with means for wrapping a gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of means for turning over one of the side edges of said strip and attaching it tothe inside of the top edges of the box which include a member having a groove with a curved lip thereto to take part in said turning and attaching, and means to withdraw said turning member at each corner of the box.
17. The combination with means for wrapping a gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of means for turning over one edge of said strip and attaching it to the inside of the top edges of the box which include a member having a groove with a curved lip and a warped surface along one side of said groove after said lip and which are effective in the turning over and attaching of said strip edge, and means to withdraw said turning member at each corner of the box.
18. The combination with means for wrapping a gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of means for turning over one edge of said strip and attaching it to the inside of the top edges of the box which embodies a member having a curved surface to turn said edge, and means to oscillate said turning member out of contact at each corner of the box.

The combination with means for wrapping a gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, ofmeans for turning over one edge of said strip and attaching it tothe inside of the top edges of the box which includes a member having a curved turning surface to act on said strip edge, a pivoted member on which the turning member is secured, and means to oscillate said pivoted member at each corner of the box to withdraw the turning member and to again place it in position.
20. The combination with means for wrapping a gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of means for turning over one edge of said strip and attaching it to the inside of the top edges of the box which includes a member having a curved turning surface to act on the strip edge, a pivoted member on which the turning member is secured, and means to oscillate the pivoted member at each corner of the box out of and into operating position which include a relatively stationary cam.
21. The combination with means for wrapping a gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of means for turning over one edge of said strip and attaching it to the inside of the top edges of the box which include a which include a relatively stationary cam, a
roll on the pivoted member to bear on the cam, a spring to press the roll in the direction or the cam, and byass member on which said roll can pass.
22. In a box covering machine, in combination, a box form, means for rotating the form, pivoted frame, means for supporting the frame by the pivot thereof, a member in the frame forward of and below the pivot, and bearing on the box, a second member in the frame below the pivot, in the rear of the first bearing-member and also bearing on the box, a laterally oscillating member positioned by said second bearingqnember,
and an edge-turning inember on the oscillating member.
28. The c'onibinatioii with-means for wrapping a gumnied paper strip around the sides of a box, of means for folding over and attaching one edge of saidstrip' to the bottom edges of the box which means include a beveled, to-and-fi-o-movir g folder to fold the portions preceding the corners and to start beveled folds thereat, and av wiper to fold the other portions of said edge and complete the beveled folds at the corners.
24. The combination-with means for wrap ping a gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of means for turning over one edge of said strip and attaching it to the bottom edges of a box and means for moving said edge-turning means in a direction at right angles to the bottom edges of the box.

The combination with means for wrapping a gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of means for turning over the two side edges of the strip and attaching them respectively to thetop and bottom edges of the box which include a plurality of oscillating wipers adapted for simultaneously operating on said strip edges.

In a box covering machine, in combination, a pivoted frame, a member to press the box sides at a point forward of and below the pivotal axis, a second member to press on the box sides at a point in the rear of and below the pivotal axis, a rod in said frame parallel to its pivotal axis, paperstripedge-folding means movable in position along said rod, means to movably support the frame by its pivot, and means to turn the box.
27, The combination of a box form, means for rotating the same, a pivoted frame, two members on the frame below the pivot to, press a paper strip against the sides of a box on said form, arms to support the frame by its pivot, paper-stripedge-turning means for the top edges of the box, and means on the pivoted frame to press laterally on the 'oxbo ttomto secure the box on said form.

In a box covering machine, in combination, a box form, means for rotating said form, a pivoted frame, means to movably support said frame by the pivot thereof, a member on the frame forward of and below the pivot to press 011 the box sides, a shaft in. the frame below and in the rear of the pivot, a member secured to the shaft adapted to bear against the sides of the box, an' oscillating strip-edge folder for the bottom edges of the box actuated by said bearing member, an arm pivoted on the frame, a wiper on said arm to act on the bottom edges of the 'box after the oscillating folder, a pivoted member movable with said shaft, a strip-edge-turning device for the top edges of the box on said pivoted member, and means to oscillate the pivoted member at each ofthe box corners. v
31. In a box covering machine, in combination, a box form, means for rotating said form, a pivoted frame, means for supporting the frame by the pivot thereof, a memturning members movable in parallelism to said box edges.
33. The combination with paper strip gumming means, and means for wrapping the gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of guiding means effective to guide said strip from the gumming means to the wrapping means at predetermined angles to the box sides and to assist in affixing the paper strip on the box sides when each of the latter is in the position substantially above the axis of rotation of the box and nearest-the gumming means.
34. The combination with paper strip gumming means, and means for wrapping the strip around the sides of a box, of guiding means for guiding said strip from the gumming means to the box at predetermined angles, which means include a roll movable in two directions substantially at right angles to each other and having its axis substantially parallel with the box sides.
35. The combination with a frame, paper strip gumming means mounted on said frame, and means for turning a box, of wrapping mechanism embodying 3a. lever pivoted on said frame, lever-guiding means also mounted on said frame, and means at the outer end of the lever for assisting in wrapping the gummed paper strip around the sides of the box.
36. The combination with a frame, paper strip gumming means mounted on said frame, and means for turning a box, of means for wrapping said paper strip around the box sides which include a pivoted lever, a slotted guide for'guiding said lever, and paper strip wrapping means at the end of said lever.
37. The combination with paper strip gumming means, and means for wrapping the gummed paper strip around the sides of a box, of guiding means effective to guide said paper strip from the gumming means to the wrapping means at predetermined angles to the box sides and which means include a guiding member below the axis of rotation of the box.
