YARN-WINDING MACHINE.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ALFRED N. ALTEMUs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelpllia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in Yarn-lVinding Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in lo yarn winding machines wherein are employed a vertically arranged winding spindle, a driving wheel, and a whirl disc which is adapted to rest upon and be driven by the driving wheel and which is slidably engaged with the spindle and provided with means to cause the spindle to be rotated with the disc and to permit the disc to be raised and lowered from and into driving engagement with the driving wheel and to rise and fall under the irregularities of the driving wheel while being driven thereby without raising or lowering the spindle.
An object of my invention is to provide an inexpensive, novel and efficient means for raising and lowering the whirl disc from and into driving engagement with the driving wheel to stop and start the actuation of the winding spindle by the operation of a hand operated lever; and a fur- I- J ther object of my invention is to construct and arrange the hand operated lever and its associated parts so that the part which supports the whirl disc when it is raised from engagement with the driving wheel will be moved very slowly relatively to the movement of the hand operated lever which moves it during the initial movement of the lever while the whirl disc is being engaged with the driving wheel, and thereafter will be moved faster relatively to the movement of the lever while the said part is being moved from the whirl disc to provide a clearance between the part and the disc to permit the disc to rise and fall under irregularities in the driving wheel while the disc is being rotated thereby, and thus reduce the yarn breakage heretofore caused by the too rapid starting of the winding spindle when the whirl disc was engaged with the driving wheel.

Referring to the drawings, the main supporting frame of the machine includes in its construction table 2 and a bracket a suitably secured thereon. The bracket 4 is provided with upper and lower forwardly projecting arms 6 and 7 carrying spaced bearings 8 and 9, respectively. The winding spindle 10 is journaled in and extends between and above the bearings 8 and 9, and it is free to rotate therein. Vertical movement of the spindle 10 is prevented by collars 11 and 12 secured thereto and adapted to engage the top and bottom of the lower bearing 9, respectively.
The upper portion of the spindle 10 is adapted to receive and rotate a cone or other suitable foundation for the yarn package to be wound in the usual well known manner, and the spindle 10 carries a disc or collar 13 to receive the base of the cone or other foundation.
The collar 11 is made square in cross section and it extends into a corresponding opening in a whirl disc 14L which surrounds the spindle 10. The disc let has an up wardly extending sleeve 15 formed thereon and having an annular groove 16 in the upper portion thereof providing an annular flange 17 hereinafter referred to. The disc 14 and its sleeve 15 are slidable vertically on the spindle 10 and collar 11, and the engagement of the disc 14 with the collar 11 causes the spindle 10 to be rotated with the disc is: when it is rotated, and permits the disc to be raised and lowered without raising and lowering the spindle.
The whirl disc 1 lrests normally upon the leather covering 1.8 secured on the periphery of a driving wheel 19 which is carried by a shaft (not shown) journaled in bearings (not shown) on the machine frame and it is driven thereby in the usual manner well known to persons skilled in this art. l Vhile the disc 14: is resting upon the covering 18 of the driving wheel 19 and being driven thereby, the disc rises and falls slightly, due to irregularities in the leather covering 18 and due to the uneven wearing of the covering The up and down movements of the disc 14 due to the irregularities in the leather covering 18 do not raise or lower the spindle 10, thus ensuring an even and uniform winding of the yarn upon the cone carried by the spindle and the prevention of accidental underwinding.
Referring now to Figs. 1, 2 and 3 of the drawings, a lever20. isfulcrumed, at 21, on
one side of the ,upper bearing 8 audit is provided with anaipwardly extending arm 22 and a forwardly extending arm 28 having a suitable handle24 formed on the forward end thereof by means of which the which is formed on and extends downwardly from the upper bearing 8. The inner end portion of the pin 27 enters the groove 16 in the sleeve 15 and it is adapted to engage the bottom of the flange .17 and raise and lower the whirl disc 14 when the pin. 27 is raised and lowered. When the lever 20 is in the normal position, the free inner end portion of the pin 27 rests within the groove 16 in spaced relation to the top and bottom walls thereof and the whirl disc 14 is in engagement with and supported by the leather covering 18 of the driving wheel 19 and the disc 14- is thus permitted to rise and fall in accordance with the irregularities of the surface of the leather coveringlS of the driving wheel 19 while the disc 14 is being rotated thereby.
When the lever 20 is moved from the position shown by full lines to the position shown by 'dot-and-dash lines in Figsl and 2 and back again to raise and lower the pin 27, the axis of the pivot 26 moves toward and from a vertical line 30 which is parallel to the axis of the spindle 10 and intersects the axis of the fulcrum 21 of the lever 20, and, therefore, it will be observed that the speed of movement of the pin 27 relatively to the speed of movement of the lever handle 24: is reduced as the pin 27 .the disc 14 into engagement with the covering on the driving wheel 19 as cmnpared with its later accelerated downwardmove- .ment after the pin 27 leaves the bottom of the flange 17 to provide the clearance for the rise and fall of the disc 14 under the irregularities of the surface. of the covering of the driving wheel 19.
\Vhen the lever 20 is moved from the full line to the dot-and-dash line position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the axis of the pivot 26 not only moves toward and from the vertical line 3030 but also back to a position be yond the same in which the lever arm 22 rests againsta projection 31 on the bearing 8 forming a stop .to limit the upward movement of the lever arm 23. \Vhen the lever arm 22 thus rests against the stop 31 with the axis of the pivot 26 back of the vertical line 230-430, the weight of the whirl disc '14- supported .by the pin 27 will hold the lever arm 22 against the stop 31 and thus retain the whirl disc 14 raised from engagement with the coveringon the driving disc 14.
Referring now to the modified construction shown in Figsa and 5, 32 designates a pin which corresponds with the pin 27 shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in relation to the whirl disc 14. This pin 32 is carriedby the lower end of a. bar 33 which is slidable vertically in a guideway in the upper spindle bearing 8. A lever 35 is fnlcrnmed, at 36, on a screw which extends from the bearing 8 through a slot in the bar 33. The lever 35 corresponds in function generally with the lever 20 and it is provided with arms 37 and 38 which correspond functionally with the arms 22 and 23, respectively, of the lever 20, The upper end portion of the lever arm 37 is pivoted, at 39, to the lower end of alink 40 whose upper end is pivoted, at 4-1, to the upper end of the bar 33. When the lever 35 is raised to the dot-and-dash line position shown in Fig. ,4, the lever arm 37 rests against a stop 42 projecting from the bearing 8, and when the lever 35 is lowered to the full line position shown in Fig. a, the lever arm 37 rests against a stop 43 projecting from the bearing 8.
When the lever arm 38 is raised and lowered, the link 40 will raise and lower the bar and thereby raise and lower the pin 32 in the same manner and for the same purpose that the pin 27 is raised and lowered when the lever arm 23 is raised and lowered; and, when the lever arm 38 is raised and lowered, the axis of the pivot 39 moves relatively to the vertical line 55 corresponding with the vertical line 3080 in Fig. l, in the same manner and for the same purpose that the axis of the pivot 26 moves relatively to the line 3030.
I claim. as my invention 1. In a yarn winding machine the combination of a supporting frame, a vertically arranged winding spindle journaled in the frame, a driving wheel, a whirl disc slidable longitudinally on the spindle and adapted to rest normally in driving engagement with the driving wheel, means causing the spindle to rotate with the disc and permitting the disc to be raised and lowered from and into engagement with the wheel, a lever fulcrumed on the frame, a part pivoted to the lever, and means operated by said part when the lever is operated to raise and lower the disc. 2. in a yarn winding machine the comhination of a supporting frame, a vertically arranged winding spindle journaled in the frame, a driving wheel, a whirl disc slidable longitudinally on the spindle and adapted to rest normally in driving engagement with the driving wheel, means causing the spindle to rotate with the disc and permitting the disc to be raised and lowered from and into engagement with the wheel, a lever fulcrumed on the frame, a part having one end portion pivoted to the lever, means to guide the other end portion of the part in a direction longitudinally of the spindle, and means associated with said part to aise and lower the disc when the lever is operated.

In a yarn winding machine the combination of a supporting frame, a vertically arranged winding spindle journaled in the frame, a driving wheel, a whirl disc slidable longitudinally on the spindle and adapted to rest normally in driving engagement with the driving wheel, means causing the spindle to rotate with the disc and permitting the disc to be raised and lowered from and. into engagement with the wheel, a lever fulcru1ned on the frame, a part pivoted to the lever, and means operated by said part when the lever is operated to raise and lower the disc, the axis of the pivot of said part moving toward and from a line which parallels the axis of the spindle and intersects the axis of the lever fulcrum to raise and lower the disc when the lever is operated. ft. in a yarn winding machine the com: bination of a" supporting frame, a vertically arranged winding spindle journaled in the frame, a driving wheel, a whirl disc slidable longitudinally on the spindle and adapted to rest normally in driving engagement with the driving wheel, means causing the spindle to rotate with the disc and permitting the disc to be raised and lowered from and into engagement with the wheel, -a lever fulcrumed on the frame, a part pivoted to the lever, a part having one end portion pivoted to the lever and another end portion pivot ally and slidahly connected to the frame to move longitudinally of the spindle, and means associated with said part to raise and lower the disc when the lever is operated, said lever when operated to aise and lower the disc moving said part to move a line intersecting its pivots toward and from the lever fulcrum, respectively.

In a yarn winding machine the combination of a supporting frame, a vertically arranged winding spindle journaled in the frame, a driving wheel, a whirl disc slidable longitudinally on the spindle and adapted to rest normally in driving engagement with the driving wheel, means causing the spindle to rotate with the disc and permitting the disc to be raised and lowered from and into engagement with the wheel, a lever fulcrumed on the frame, part having one end portion pivoted to the lever and another end portion pivotally and slidably connected to the frame to move longitudinally of the spindle, means associated with said part to raise and lower the disc when the lever is operated, said lever when operated to raise and lower the disc moving said part to move a line intersecting its pivots toward and from the lever fulcrum, respectively, and slightly beyond the lever fulcrum when the disc is raised, and a stop to limit the movement of the lever when the disc is raised.

In a yarn winding machine the combination of a supporting frame, a vertically arranged winding spindle journaled in the frame, a driving wheel, a whirl disc slidable longitudinally on the spindle and adapted to rest normally in driving engagement with the driving wheel, means causing the spindle to rotate with the disc and permitting the disc to be raised and lowered from and into engagement with the wheel, a vertically movable lever fulcrumed on the frame, a part having one portion thereof pivoted to the lever and another portion thereof guided by the frame, and means associated with said part to raise and lower the disc when the lever is operated.

In a yarn winding machine the combination of a supporting frame, a vertically arranged winding spindle journaled in the frame, a driving wheel, a whirl disc slidable longitudinally on the spindle and adapted to rest normally in driving engagement with the driving wheel, means causing the spindle to rotate with the disc and permitting the disc to be raised and lowered from and into engagement with the wheel, a vertically movable lever fulcrumed on the frame and having an arm extending upwardly from its fulcrum, apart having its upper end portion pivoted tothe lever arm and its lower end portion guided by the frame, and means associated with said part to raise and lower thedisc when the lever is operated.

In a yarn-winding machine the combination of a supporting frame, a vertically arranged. winding spindle journaled in the frame,a driving wheel, a whirl disc slidable longitudinally on the spindle and adapted to rest normally in driving engagement with the driving wheel, means causing the spindle to rotate with the disc and permitting the disc to be raised and lowered from and'into engagement with the wheel, a vertically movable lever fulcrumed on the frame and having an arm extending upwardly from its fulcrum, a part having an upper end portion pivoted to the lever arm and a lower end portion pivotally and slidably connected to the frame to move longitudinally of the spin- Y dle, and means associated with the lower end portion of said part to raise and lower the disc when the lever is operated, said lever when operated to raise and lower the disc moving said part to move a line intersecting its pivots toward and from the lever fulcrum, respectively.

In a yarn winding machine the combination of a supporting frame, a vertically arranged winding spindle journaled in the frame, a driving wheel, a whirl disc slidable longitudinally on the spindle and adaptedto rest normally in driving engagement with the driving wheel, means causing the spindle 'to rotate with the disc and permittin the disc to be raised and lowered from amf into engagement with the wheel, a vertically movable lever fulcrumed on the frame and having an arm extending upwardly from its fulcrum, a part having an upper end portion pivoted to the lever arm and the lower end portion pivot-ally and slidably connected to the frame to move longitudinally of the spindle, means associated with the lower end portion of said part to raise and lower the 'disc when the leveris operated, said lever when operated to raise and lower the disc moving said part to move a line intersecting its pivots toward and from the lever fulcrum, respectively, and slightly beyond the lever fulcrum when the disc is raised, and a-stop 'to limit the movement of the lever when the disc is raised.

In a yarn winding machine the combination of a supporting frame provided with a part having a slot therein, a vertically arranged winding spindle journaled in the frame, a driving wheel, a whirl disc slidable longitudinally on the spindle and adapted to rest normally in driving engagement with the driving wheel, means causing the. spindle to rotate with the disc and permitting the disc to be raised and lowered from and into engagement with the wheel, a vertically movable lever fulcrmned on the frmne, a part pivoted to the lever and having a pin extending into and guided by said slot and being arranged to raise and lower the disc when the lever is operated.
